National League Lacrosse: Rochester Knighthawks Hang On To Defeat Washington Stealth 11-10 On May 11 To Win 2013 NLL Championship

Washington Stealth vs Rochester NLL Champions Cup

The Washington Stealth’s bid for a second Champions Cup in four years ran out of steam in the final minutes of Saturday’s NLL Championship Game as the Rochester Knighthawks, led by All-Pro goaltender Matt Vinc, hung on for an 11-10 win to secure their second consecutive title before a sold-out Langley Events Centre in Langley, British Columbia.
For the 5,200 fans that packed Langley’s arena for the first NLL title to be contested in British Columbia, the game proved to be a classic with Washington chasing Rochester throughout the night forcing three ties before the Knighthawks managed to hold down the Stealth and hang on for the win.
But in a game that rarely strayed beyond a one-goal margin, it was the Stealth’s second-half defensive effort, holding Rochester to a single goal while scoring three of its own, that nearly forced a fourth tie and a bid for the title.
“You couldn’t ask for a more exciting game,” said Stealth head coach Chris Hall, whose squad hung with Rochester shot-for-shot putting 31 on Vinc in the first then tightened up its own defense in the second. “It was a great game to watch and was played by two awfully good teams,” Hall said. “Both teams have known since the beginning of this week that it was likely going to be a one goal game today.”
For Rochester, the title made NLL history, as the Knighthawks became the only team since the Toronto Rock in 2002 and 2003 to win back-to-back championships in the past decade.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth Avance To Third NLL Championship Game In Four Years With 14-13 Win Over Calgary Roughnecks

Washington Stealth 2013 NLL Championship Final Advance

The Washington Stealth are headed to the NLL Championship Game for the third time in four years after their 14-13 road win over the Calgary Roughnecks in the West Division Final at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night.
”Two great lacrosse teams and some phenomenal lacrosse players,” said Stealth head coach Chris Hall. “You are watching some of the best athletes on the planet when you watch these two teams go at it.”
Despite seven second-half goals by Roughnecks forward Curtis Dickson, the Stealth held on for the win in a game that came down to the final possession. Down by one goal with the goalie pulled, Calgary failed to get a shot off with 10 seconds left before Washington cleared the ball down the floor to help the remaining time expire.
Washington lead 2-0 after the first quarter, 8-5 at halftime and 11-10 after the third quarter in a game in which they never trailed.
Stealth forwards Athan Iannucci and Rhys Duch both scored three goals and finished with seven points while goaltender Tyler Richards made 39 saves on 52 shots to help them get back to the title game.
Dickson finished with eight points (7+1) and was the first NLL player to score seven goals in a postseason game since Buffalo Bandits transition player Mark Steenhuis accomplished the feat in 2008. Dane Dobbie scored a hat trick as the only other Roughnecks player to score more than once. Calgary forward Shawn Evans, the NLL’s regular season scoring champ with 112 points, opened the scoring for the Roughnecks early in the second quarter but finished with just three assists the rest of the way.
”Two great lacrosse teams and some phenomenal lacrosse players,” Hall said. “You are watching some of the best athletes on the planet when you watch these two teams go at it.”
The first quarter set the scene for a physical battle in the “Rough House” with both teams setting the pace high and pushing for momentum. The Stealth went up 2-0 after the first quarter, despite the Roughnecks controlling for the better part of the first.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth Host Edmonton Rush In West Semifinal On April 27

Washington Stealth Vs Edmonton Rush Playoffs

Coming off of a convincing home victory in its regular season finale last Saturday, the Washington Stealth begins its quest for the 2013 National Lacrosse League Champions Cup with a West Division semi-final playoff matchup against the Edmonton Rush, today at Comcast Arena.
Game time for the playoff opener is 4:30 p.m. PDT. The game is broadcast live across the U.S and Canada on the CBS Sports Network.
For the Stealth who are making their third post-season appearance in four years, a third trip to the NLL Championship is well within its grasp, but Stealth head coach Chris Hall knows that in the playoffs anything can happen.
“We’re healthy and in good shape but this is anyone’s to grab,” Hall said.
“It’s going to come down to who is sharp, playing well and getting a bounce here or there,” he said. “The matchups are pretty even right down the line.”
Saturday’s contest is Washington’s first home playoff game since the 2010 NLL title game when it hoisted the Champions Cup in front of a home sell-out at Comcast Arena and the team, with a 5-1 all-time post-season record since moving to the state in 2010, is a blistering 3-0 in home playoff games.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (9-7) Clinch Second Seed In West Division With 17-13 Home Win Over Philadelphia Wings (7-9) On April 20

The Washington Stealth (9-7) clinched the second seed in the West Division and a home playoff game by riding a nine-point effort by Rhys Duch for a 17-13 win over the visiting Philadelphia Wings (7-9) at Comcast Arena on Saturday night. “Goal number one was obviously making it into the playoffs,” said Stealth head coach Chris Hall. “But goal number two was playing in front of our home fans in our home building so that’s two down but still some more to go.” With the win, the Stealth finished with a winning record for the first time since they finished at 10-6 in 2010, when they later went on to win the NLL Champion’s Cup. With the loss, the Wings slipped to the third seed in the East and will travel to Rochester for the first round of the playoffs next weekend. Duch finished the game with four goals and five assists, his second highest point total of the 2013 season. Duch ended the regular season with 45 goals in 2013 to win the first NLL goal scoring title of his five-year career. “Accolades are awesome,” Duch said. “It’s great to be rewarded and recognized for your successes and obviously scoring goals is something that I take pride in. So it’s a cool feeling to win that award but I score goals to help my team win.” After hitting a wall after a hot start to the season, Cliff Smith ended the season on a high note by finishing the night with two goals and five assists to cap off a career year for the lefty.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (8-7) Lose 15-10 To Buffalo Bandits (6-9) On April 13

Washington Stealth vs Bandits

The Buffalo Bandits (6-9) snapped a six-game losing streak and stayed alive in the playoff race with a critical 15-10 road win over the Washington Stealth (8-7) at Comcast Arena on Saturday night.
“We’ve been working to get more production from our offense while the defense and goaltending has really been holding us in games,” said Stealth head coach Chris Hall. “Tonight, it wasn’t there.”
The Bandits avoided elimination from postseason contention with the victory in what became a must-win game after the Rochester Knighthawks won earlier in the night.
Aaron Wilson scored a team-high four goals for the Bandits, Mark Steenhuis had seven points (2+5), rookies Kevin Brownell and Jordan Critch combined for nine points while backup goalie Kurtis Wagar, starting in place of an injured Anthony Cosmo, had 33 saves on 43 shots.
“I thought we did a great job with ball movement, seeing the open guys and guys hitting the open shots as well,” Steenhuis said. “We had a good overall effort. I think everybody (on offense) got on the scoresheet. Wagar played awesome with Cosmo being out. All the weight was on his shoulders and he really rose to the occasion.”
The Stealth opened the scoring just 51 seconds in the game, when Dean Hill was able to finish off a play from Brett Bucktooth to give the Stealth a 1-0 lead. Aaron Wilson was able to answer for the Bandits a little over a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. The two teams traded two more goals, as Lewis Ratcliff and Bob Snider scored for the Stealth and Shawn Williams and Dhane Smith scored for the Bandits and the period ended tied 3-3. Smith added two assists in addition to his one goal in his return from injury.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (8-6) Secure Playoff Slot With 12-11 Win Over Calgary

Washington Stealth vs Calgary

The Washington Stealth secured its third post-season berth in four years with a come-from-behind 12-11 NLL road victory against the Calgary Roughnecks on Saturday night before 10,008 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.
Washington forward Rhys Duch scored the winning goal with 2:45 remaining after the Stealth’s Dean Hill tied the game just a minute before.
“We were a championship team tonight,” said Duch who took a Mitch McMichael pass and converted the game winner after Calgary goaltender Mike Poulin followed his momentum in front of the goal creating an opportunity for a clean shot.
“Scoring seven of the last nine goals is huge for our confidence, said Duch, whose winner capped a three goal, four assist player-of-the-game performance on the night. It was the ninth hat trick this season for the Victoria, British Columbia native.
Now 8-6 on the season and guaranteed a .500 finish or better for the third time in four years, the Stealth turn its sights on the two remaining regular season home games where it can secure a post-season, home-floor advantage with a successful finish.
Forging a narrow 4-3 lead midway through the second, the Stealth turned its edge into misfortune, giving up five straight scores through the end of the half and into the opening minutes of the third to trail 8-4.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (7-4) Beat Philadelphia Wings On The Road 16-10 On March 9 To Stay On Top In NLL West

Washington Stealth

Washington’s special teams play held a coming-out party, scoring five short-handed goals to silence a potent Wings offense with a 16-10 road win, Saturday night at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.
The victory – the Stealth’s third straight giving them their longest unbeaten run of the season, was Washington’s first-ever in Philadelphia and halted a three-win run by the Wings.
Now 7-4 with just five games remaining and holding down first in the NLL West, Washington needs just an eighth win, combined with a Colorado loss and a favorable tie-breaker scenario, to secure its third playoff berth in four years.
“It’s always difficult to win on the road and especially in the East Division,” said Stealth Head Coach Chris Hall.
“Road wins are hard to come by in this league. We were able to pounce on them early and got a huge lead,” he said. “We took advantage of the situations that presented themselves to us.”
And the situations were plentiful.
Entering the game with just a single short-handed goal on the season, the Stealth exploded for five scores on man-down situations to clip the Wings power play threat and quiet the Wells Fargo Center.
With season-high performances, NLL leading scorer Rhys Duch delivered five goals and three assists for eight points, while Lewis Ratcliff hit a career milestone with four goals for his 401st in 11 years of NLL play. Along with three assists, Ratcliff had seven key points on the night.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (6-4) Tops Minnesota Swarm 11-8 On March 3

Washington Stealth vs Swarm

Rhys Duch delivered his 400th career point as the Washington Stealth powered to a full-game lead in the NLL West with an 11-8 win over the Minnesota Swarm, Sunday before 2,663 at Everett’s Comcast Arena.
With its second consecutive win over a West Division opponent, the now 6-4 Stealth moved a full game ahead of both Edmonton (5-5) and Calgary (5-5), which fell to the Rush on Saturday. Minnesota, now at 3-6, is fourth in the West followed by Colorado at 2-6.
“To be alone in first after ten games in the West is pretty gratifying,” said Stealth Coach Chris Hall. “Even when Minnesota came at us we held up pretty well. I think we earned that tonight.”
In what has become an up-and-down season in a highly competitive NLL West, Sunday’s victory marked the second time in the 2013 campaign where the Stealth put together back-to-back wins since downing defending NLL champion Rochester and then Colorado in the first two games of the season.
“I think we learn game-by-game the offense is showing better signs of chemistry,” Hall said.
For Duch, who entered the game with 395 points, his career milestone came in the unselfish fashion that has characterized the Stealth’s play all season – with his fourth assist of the night on a Brett Bucktooth goal just 30 seconds into the fourth.

National League Lacrosse: Edmonton Rush Defeat Washington Stealth 15-10 Behind Six Goals By Rookie Attacker Mark Matthews On Feb 15

Mark Matthews Edmonton Rush vs Stealth

Rookie phenom Mark Matthews, the first overall pick in the 2012 NLL Entry Draft, scored six goals and one assist to lead the Edmonton Rush (2-4) to their first home win with a 15-10 victory over the Washington Stealth (4-4) at Rexall Place on Friday night.

The Washington Stealth struggled to score in first and never really got their legs as Edmonton and rookie Mark Matthews ran away with a 15-10 NLL decision before 5,627, Friday at Rexall Place in Edmonton.

The loss dropped the Stealth to 4-4 while Edmonton, now 2-4 with both wins coming against the Stealth, notched their first home win this season.

“We knew exactly what was coming and we let it happen to us,” said Stealth Coach Chris Hall. “We got behind the eight ball early.  We just let them smother us right away.”

Playing without the services of defenders Bill Hostrawser, Jeff Moleski and Tim Henderson, Washington was outshot 61-35 and on offense was never able to challenge an Edmonton squad hungry for their first home win of the season.

Although Edmonton landed the first two goals of the game on scores by Ryan Ward and Matthews, Washington came back with a Brett Bucktooth power play goal at 5:06 and a score by Rhys Duch at 3:44 to knot the game at 2-2.

But after three Edmonton goals followed, two closing out the first and Matthews’ opening score in the second, the Stealth were down 5-2 and had managed just five shots – four coming on a power play attempt early in the first.
