Lacrosse In The World: “Lacrosse The Nations” Partners With Club Esperanza (Hope) Assisting Children In La Chureca, Nicaragua (Video)

La Chureca, Nicaragua

Club Hope, Managua, Nicaragua

Lacrosse the Nations is in partnership with Club Esperanza (Hope) located in Villa Guadalupe.  This community is populated with families formerly living in La Chureca as well as other displaced populations.  Because public school is only half day in Managua, the lacrosse program consists of morning and afternoon lacrosse class.  Class incorporates LtN’s Life Skills curriculum, using the sport to teach good health and critical life skills.  Additionally, LtN supplements Club Esperanza’s feeding program, providing for nutritious items like cheese, milk, fruit and vegetables.

Lacrosse PE Program

The lacrosse program is our conduit for change.  This program creates a space for kids to be kids, one of the only places where they can have fun, be safe, and play together productively.   It also provides incentive to increase school enrollment, improve attendance and graduation rates, and foster health and the development of critical life skills through our Curriculum.

Learn about the different elements of our lacrosse program.

Coaches

We have hired and trained two Nicaraguan lacrosse coaches to run the lacrosse program and be respected role models and mentors for the players.  Beginning in 2011 we implemented a Coaches Scholarship Program to provide for their continuing education.  We also have a Lacrosse Program Director who oversees the program and facilitates the best possible communication and accountability between the organization stateside and our coaches.

Meet our School of Hope Coaches and Lacrosse Program Director.

Nutrition Program

LtN supplements the Club Hope feeding program by providing breakfast for 265 kids every day.  Without LtN support, children would not have access to meals until lunch.   Most would simply be given coffee at home to hold them over.  Research time and again shows the importance of breakfast in daily cognitive function.

History

Lacrosse the Nations pilot program began in 2008 with the Colegio Cristiano La Esperanza (School of Hope) located inside La Chureca, the city trash dump on the outskirts of Managua Nicaragua.  The lacrosse program consisted of a PE and after-school   class, run by Coaches Norman and Miguel.

In December 2012, La Chureca (both trash dump and community) was officially closed.  With the opening of a new recycling plant, families had to dismantle their homes and move within a matter of hours.  They were provided new homes in a nearby community, Villa Guadalupe.  While the plant regulates commerce and families have moved, these drastic changes have completely transformed the economic and social livelihood of La Chureca families.

The clearing of La Chureca brought a difficult and emotional close to the School of Hope. Rather than be an official school, subjected to government oversight, administrators decided to operate as Club Hope in Villa Guadalupe; offering preschool/kindergarten, elementary school tutoring, music classes, feeding program and lacrosse.

“2013 NCAA Div III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament”: RIT Men’s Lacrosse (19-2) Faces Stevenson (20-2) In Championship Game On May 26 After 10-9 Overtime Win Over #1 SUNY Cortland In Semifinals (Video)

RIT Men's LacrosseFor the first time in the program’s illustrious history, the RIT (19-2) men’s lacrosse team will play for the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse national title thanks to Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute)’s overtime goal with 1:55 left, giving the Tigers a 10-9 win over top seeded and previously undefeated SUNY Cortland (19-1) in the semifinals on Sunday. RIT will face Stevenson University (20-2) in the championship game on Sunday, May 26 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. at 4 p.m.

“I’m so excited and proud of the guys,” said an elated Head Coach Jake Coon. “It was a typical RIT/Cortland game that came down to the end. We stuck with our game plan and were able to come up with the plays down the stretch. This is a great day for our team, alumni, students and administration.”

Warren scored off the hidden ball trick with the assist going to Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA/Inglemoor) with 1:55 to play in overtime. Warren and Wisman crossed at the top of the box. Warren appeared to flip the ball to Wisman, but kept it himself. Cortland goalie Mike Kaminski followed Wisman, allowing Warren to fire a shot into the open net, sending the Tigers onto the championship game.

“We had a pick play called in the huddle,” said Warren. “Coach WIlkens and Coach Dutton said if that didn’t work go with the hidden ball trick. I saw the goalie follow Taylor so I fired it into the open net.”

RIT ties a single-season school record with 19 wins, also set in 2011. The Tigers enter the national championship game having won 13 straight games and are 68-12 since the start of the 2010 season.

Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) and Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) each had two goals for the Tigers, while Wisman finished with three assists. Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) picked up his 19th win of the season, making 10 saves, including three late in the fourth quarter after Cortland made a run to tie the game.
