NCAA Lacrosse: UC Davis Women’s Lacrosse Upsets #14 Stanford 15-14 In Overtime On April 25

UC Davis Women's Lacrosse vs Stanford

Senior attacker Elizabeth Datino scored on a second-chance crease roll with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime to lift UC Davis to a 15-14 upset of 14th-ranked Stanford in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s lacrosse Senior Night finale at Aggie Stadium Thursday night.
The Aggies finish their season at 6-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Cardinal move to 10-5 for the year and 5-2 in MPSF games.
Thursday’s win marks UC Davis’ first over Stanford since a 16-13 home victory on April 2, 2000, ending a streak of 19 straight losses in the series. It also represents the first time the Aggies have ever defeated a team ranked in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I Top 20.
Datino led UC Davis with five goals while junior Carly Voris tallied a career-high four. Senior Hannah Mirza, sophomore Elizabeth Landry and sophomore Meghan Jordan each added two scores. Landry also recorded four assists for six total points while Jordan chipped in another three. Sophomore goalkeeper Kai Murphy recorded 11 saves.
For Stanford, sophomore attacker Kyle Fraser matched Datino’s total of five goals. Sophomore Hannah Farr and freshman Julia Burns each posted three goals with an assist. Junior goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz finished with 11 saves.
Although Farr drew first blood with her unassisted goal just 75 seconds into the contest, UC Davis seized an early lead with three unanswered through the 10th minute. The Cardinal managed to cut the lead to a single goal on two different occasions in the first half. The Aggies clung to a 5-4 lead at halftime.

NCAA Lacrosse: UC Davis Women’s Lacrosse (5-8) Tops San Diego State (8-6) 19-12 On April 19

UC Davis Women's Lacrosse vs San Diego State

Seniors Elizabeth Datino and Hannah Mirza combined for nine goals while sophomore attacker Meghan Jordan tallied a career-high six assists, helping UC Davis surge to a 19-12 victory over San Diego State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Friday evening.
The Aggies improve to 5-8 overall and win their second straight conference game to move to 2-4 in MPSF play. The Aztecs slip to 8-6 for the year, 3-3 in league.
Mirza shot a perfect 5-for-5 with three goals in eight-meter opportunities. Datino added four goals and sophomore Elizabeth Landry tallied a hat trick to go with four draw controls. Jordan had one goal and three assists in each half for eight total points. Her goal in the 39th minute gave UC Davis the lead for good.
For SDSU, sophomore midfielder Sophie Koubek scored three goals while Christina Ricciardulli, Bailey Ewing and Alexa Comfort each netted two. Freshman Felice Artuso picked up five draw controls to match Aggie first-year Mary Doyle for the game high in that category.
UC Davis jumped out to a strong start, scoring five of the contest’s first six goals during the initial 10 minutes. Senior Stephanie Guercio scored on a pair of unassisted drives while Jordan had a goal and assist in that boost. But the Aztecs, whose play was marred by two unforced turnovers on their first two possessions, recovered to a 7-2 run during the next 16 minutes of play. Lauren Maack assisted Madison Formwalt for a goal in the 28th minute to give SDSU its first lead.
Jordan found Landry for a goal with 1:46 left in the half to equalize at 8-8, but the Aztecs responded with two quick goals in taking a 10-8 advantage. Artuso hit an eight-meter and Comfort converted an assist form Michaela Jarvis to establish their team’s largest lead.

NCAA Lacrosse: #20 Denver Women’s Lacrosse (13-1) Holds On To Defeat UC Davis 13-11 On April 7; Ten-Game Winning Streak And #1 In MPSF

Denver Women's Lacrosse vs UC Davis

Redshirt senior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) combined to record 17 points, as the No. 20 University of Denver women’s lacrosse team defeated UC Davis 13-11 Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
The win stretches Denver’s (13-1, 5-0 MPSF) overall winning streak to 10 and the home winning streak to 18.
“Davis is a tough opponent and we knew that coming in,” head coach Liza Kelly said. “They played hard the entire game, they are physical and scrappy. Our team came out a little flat today after the win on Friday. We need to figure out how to put a Friday and Sunday together with 60 minute performances for both games. We have really asked for leadership from Kara and Jill, not just goals and assists. Knowing they have the ability to put the ball in the net really helps us.”
Secora recorded five goals and four assists, and Remenapp had a pair of goals while tying career highs with six assists and eight points. Junior Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.), freshman Rachael McKinnon (Brooklyn, Ontario) and senior Mikayla Clark (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied two goals apiece. Senior Kate Henrich (Lansdale, Pa.) finished with six caused turnovers and three ground balls, and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) made eight saves in the game.
The Pioneers opened the game with a goal from Secora, but the Aggies responded with back-to-back tallies to take a 2-1 lead 4:56 in. Denver bounced back with three-unanswered to take a 4-2 edge with 16:50 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers were held scoreless for the next 15 minutes, however, as UC Davis (3-8, 0-4 MPSF) scored five of the next six goals to take a 7-5 lead with 50 seconds left before the break. Secora pulled one back for DU with eight seconds left in the half, and the Aggies carried a 7-6 advantage into the intermission.
UC Davis opened the scoring in the second half, but the Pioneers responded with four-straight scores to take a 10-8 lead with 14:15 left in the closing period. The Aggies answered with three of the next four goals, to tie the game at 11 with 7:39 left to play. The Pioneers rallied for two straight goals and held onto the ball for nearly four minutes to hold onto the 13-11 victory.

NCAA Lacrosse: Cal Berkeley Women’s Lacrosse (2-2) Defeated UC Davis 18-12 On March 10

Cal Berkeley Women's Lacrosse vs UC Davis

The California lacrosse rebounded from an early 4-1 deficit against UC Davis to defeat the Aggies, 18-12, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 2-0 in MPSF Conference play and evened their overall record to 2-2. Senior attacker Megan Takacs was back to her old form, tying her personal best with six goals to lead Cal.
Today’s performance by Takacs marks the third time in her career that she has scored a personal-best six goals. The other two times came last season against Detroit on March 8 and Boston on March 14. The 2012 MPSF Player of the Year is now tied for the team lead in goals (10) with Gaby Christman.
It took Cal a little while to get things in motion offensively, though, on Sunday.
Just four minutes into the match, UC Davis had jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. Cal head coach Ginger Miles called a timeout to regroup her Bears.
“We knew we just needed to make some defensive adjustments,” Miles said. “I think we came out a little flat for the first few minutes of the game, but our girls did a really good job of picking up the energy and making those adjustments that we asked them to make in the huddle. We came back and were able to close the margin.”
The Bears’ adjustments proved to do the trick as they went on to outscore the Aggies, 7-2, for the rest of the first half to give Cal an 8-6 lead at the break.
At the outset of the second half, UC Davis notched the first score of the half to cut the deficit to one, but five consecutive Cal goals gave the Bears the lead for good.

NCAA Lacrosse: USC Women’s Lacrosse (4-3) Claims 12-7 Victory Over UC Davis On March 6

USC Women's Lacrosse vs UC Davis

Just two days removed from a pair of East Coast road games, the USC women’s lacrosse team (4-3, 2-0 MPSF) rolled into Aggie Stadium to claim a 12-7 MPSF victory over UC Davis (1-3, 0-2) on Wednesday, March 6. Freshman midfield Amanda Johansen was solid in the center circle with six draw controls and had game-high honors with five goals for the Women of Troy.
“I’m really happy and proud of the girls for responding after the Princeton game,” said head coach Lindsey Munday. “We didn’t have much turnaround time after getting back from the East Coast on Sunday night, so I’m really proud that we were able to switch gears and get our minds set for a new opponent. The team really worked on the things that we needed to improve on from our last game, and I think we did a good job on those things, tonight.”
Freshman attack Caroline de Lyra continued her torrid string of performances with four goals and four assists to lead all players with eight points. Freshman attack Caroline Cordrey had a goal and freshmen midfields Katie Austin and Paige Bonomi each finished the night with a goal and an assist.
The Trojan defense held an opponent to eight goals or fewer for the fourth time, this season: all USC victories. Freshman goalie Liz Shaeffer put up a wall in front of the cage and stopped 11 shots to record a .611 save percentage against the Aggies. Freshman defense Courtney Tarleton had a team-high four ground balls and was responsible for two of USC’s nine caused turnovers.
Three other Trojans had two ground balls apiece: Shaeffer, junior midfield Ceilidh Meagher, and junior midfield Elizabeth Eddy who started for the first time, this season. Eddy also picked up a draw control and had a caused turnover.
“Elizabeth Eddy got her first start, tonight, and played a really solid defensive game for us,” said Munday. “We’re all really excited for her potential.”
For UC Davis, midfield Elizabeth Landry scored three times, with each of the other four goals coming from different Aggies. Landry also picked up a pair of ground balls and had two draw controls. Tess Alekna led all players with five ground balls and Hannah Mirza had three ground balls, and four draw controls to go with a goal and an assist.

HEAD COACH KATE HENWOOD:
“This is a really big week for us, obviously. I strongly believe that we have one of the best teams in the conference but we haven’t proved it yet. And the first people we need to prove it to is ourselves. We’ve had a refocus in practice on us. We have two very athletic teams coming up. They will be tough opponents, but we have to focus on UC Davis and what we’ll bring to the table. So I expect to see a more disciplined team out there tomorrow night.”
“Give credit to Saint Mary’s because they wanted it more than we did. That has to be something that our players commit to themselves, that they show up to play. You’re working so hard at your sport for so many hours a day that it consumes you, so you have to show up and play. It’s the moment you work for. If I had to point my finger at one thing, it was our lack of composure in emotional moments. It wasn’t just throwing the ball away at the end of the game, which we did, it was multiple opportunities where we passed the ball to the goalie instead of getting a quality shot off, or getting a beautiful feed and dropping the ball. Those have to be goals, they have to moments where we capitalize. We just weren’t as focused as we need to be.”

Last weekend, the Trojans showed their mettle in the program’s first-ever road games. USC earned an East Coast road-trip split with a 23-8 win over LIU Brooklyn and a tough 18-13 loss at Princeton. Freshman attack Caroline de Lyra was unconscionable as she scored eight goals against the Tigers en route to her second-career nine-point game.
USC has displayed a balanced attack all season with several players who have showcased their ability to go to goal and score when necessary. de Lyra leads the team with 21 goals and 15 assists, but freshman attack Caroline Cordrey is just a shade behind with 14 goals, this year. Freshman midfield Amanda Johansen also had 14 goals, and leads the team with 40 draw controls.
Freshman midfield Paige Bonomi scored five goals in USC’s win over the Blackbirds and has 15 goals to date. On the other end of the field, freshman defense Courtney Tarleton has 18 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers to lead the Trojans. Fellow frosh Kelsey Dreyer has 11 ground balls. Freshman midfield Paige Bonomi scored five goals to lead USC against the Blackbirds, while fellow freshmen Caroline de Lyra, Caroline Cordrey, and Amanda Johansen each recorded four goals apiece. De Lyra lit the lamp eight times against the Tigers and had an assist to log her second nine-point game of the season. The Trojans trailed Princeton, 10-9, at the opening of the second half and fought hard to the finish, but had their three-game winning streak snapped.
ROCKIN’ ROOKIES: A pair of USC freshmen brought home Rookie of the Week honors, for the week of Feb. 25. Freshman attack Caroline de Lyra was named the WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week on the heels of an incredible nine-point performance against Saint Mary’s College as she led the Trojans to their first-ever MPSF win. Freshman midfield Amanda Johansen was just as instrumental as de Lyra in USC’s win over the Gaels and was named the MPSF Rookie of the Week for her efforts.
