“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: Duke Rallies From 5-0 Deficit, Defeats Syracuse 16-10 To Win Second National Championship; Brendan Fowler Dominates At Faceoff Winning 20 Of 28

Duke Men's Lacrosse 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Champions

Duke rallied from an early deficit to beat Syracuse 16-10 on Monday and win its second NCAA men’s lacrosse title.
The Blue Devils trailed 5-0 in the second quarter.
Jordan Wolf had four goals for Duke (16-5). Josh Offit and Josh Dionne each scored three times.
But the real star for the Blue Devils was junior faceoff man Brendan Fowler, who won 13 straight at one point to give Duke possession for long stretches. Fowler won 20 of 28 faceoffs overall and was honored as the game’s most outstanding player.
The Blue Devils failed to score on their first 11 shots but closed out with 10 of the game’s last 13 goals.
Dylan Donahue led Syracuse (16-4) with three goals. JoJo Marasco scored two fourth-quarter goals 35 seconds apart, pulling the Orange within 13-9 with 7:36 to play.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #1 Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse Faces Duke In Title Game As Both Teams Feature Balanced Offensive Attacks

2013 NCAA Men;s Lacrosse Championship Duke vs Syracuse

Perhaps the most striking element of how Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse and Duke adapted this season is balance they boast. Duke has a 50-goal scorer in Jordan Wolf, but all three of its starting attackmen have at least 45 points and its top six midfielders each have at least 20 points.
Syracuse, a program long known for its stars, doesn’t have a player with more than 33 goals. The Orange collected only one of their 11 national titles without a 40-goal scorer (Casey Powell had 39 in 1995).
Perhaps most tellingly, Syracuse’s signature player this year is a JoJo Marasco, a midfielder who topped the 40-assist mark.
“There’s no Powells or Gaits running around out there, just a bunch of great hard‑working young men that know they’re going to be in tight games and have found a way to win most of them,” Denver coach Bill Tierney said after the Orange edged his team 9-8 in Saturday’s semifinals.
Now, one more contest remains for a pair of teams accustomed to success that nonetheless might have been discounted in late winter.
“You come to Syracuse to win a lot of lacrosse games,” Marasco said. “We knew we were going to have a great year this year.”
Come Monday afternoon, either the Orange or the Blue Devils will wind up with a season they’ll never forget.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse Defense Forced High-Scoring, Efficient Denver Offense Into 17 Turnovers And A Season Low 8 Goals On 24 Total Shots

It became clear early on that Denver would not have the typical efficient offensive performance it has become so accustomed to…SU forced five turnovers in the first quarter and four more in the second while the Pioneers managed just 10 shots in the first half.

2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships PhiladephiaSU held the Pioneers to their lowest scoring output of the year to pull out a 9-8 win at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to advance to the national championship game. Denver had 17 turnovers, and the Orange forced them into many one-and-done shots they had avoided for most of the year. For Syracuse, the win marked the seventh straight game it limited an opponent to fewer than 10 goals, no small feat against a Denver squad averaging 12.67 scores per contest.

Even though Brian Megill typically covers opponents’ biggest offensive threats, the Orange went with David Hamlin on Pioneers leading scorer Eric Law. Law scored three goals, but all three came on off-ball opportunities, and he never beat Hamlin on a dodge for a score. Meanwhile, Sean Young completely shut down Wes Berg, who was second in the country with 56 goals and had 12 in Denver’s first two tournament games but failed to register a point Saturday.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #4 Denver Men’s Lacrosse Builds Early Lead, Falls To #1 Syracuse 9-8 In Semifinals On May 25

Denver Men's Lacrosse vs Syracuse 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships

Senior attacker Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) netted his team-leading 13th-career hat trick, but the fourth-seeded University of Denver men’s lacrosse team fell to top-seeded Syracuse by a count of 9-8 on Saturday evening at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The Pioneers ended the season with a 14-5 mark, while Syracuse will take a 16-3 record into Monday’s National Championship game against Duke.
Law’s three goals were complimented on Saturday by two goals from sophomore Eric Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.), and one from seniors Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario), Taylor Young (Littleton, Colo.) and Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.). Carraro also won 12-of-21 face-offs in the game. Flint, Young, Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) and Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.) all finished with one assist.
Sophomore goalie Ryan LaPlante (Fort Collins, Colo.) made a season-high 13 saves and allowed just two goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. Junior Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) made four saves in the second half.
LaPlante was the story of the first half, making 13 saves in the first 30 minutes, snapping his season-high, and was just three saves shy of his career high. Denver raced out to a 3-0 lead on two goals from Adamson and a goal from Carraro. DU’s first three goals were all unassisted. The Orange’s Luke Cometti got his first of two first half goals with 0:53 to play in the opening quarter to cut the Pioneer advantage to 3-1 at the first break.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach John Desko And Denver’s Bill Tierney Are “The Two Winningest Active Coaches In Division I Lacrosse”

Syracuse Men's Lacrosse Head Coach John Desko vs Denver Head Coach Bill Tierney

The matchup between Syracuse and Denver features the two winningest active coaches in Division I lacrosse by percentage. Orange mentor John Desko is first on that list with a .765 winning percentage (186-57). Denver’s Bill Tierney is second at .742 (322-112).

THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS

In addition to regular-season success, both men have excelled in the postseason. Desko owns the highest NCAA Tournament winning percentage (min. 10 games) at .789 (30-8). Tierney is fifth (.700, 35-15). Tierney ranks second in career NCAA postseason wins (35) and Desko is fourth with 30. The pair has combined to win 11 national championships with Tierney tying SU legend Roy Simmons Jr. atop the list with six. Desko is third with five NCAA

titles. All of Tierney’s championships came while he was the head coach at Princeton.

In 18 head-to-head matchups, Desko owns a 13-5 advantage against Tierney, including a 4-1 record in NCAA postseason meetings. The last time the two legends matched wits was in the 2011 season opener. Desko’s Orange defeated Tierney’s Pioneers in that one, 13-7.

This is just the fourth meeting between the Orange and Pioneers. The Orange prevailed in the first matchup, 13-10, at the 2002 Pioneer Face-Off Classic in Denver, and beat the Pioneers, 15-9 and 13-7, respectively, in the 2010 and 2011 season openers for both teams.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: “Goalie Play” Will Be Critical For The Winner In The #1 Syracuse Vs #4 Denver Semifinal; “60% Save Rates” Keyed Both Teams Quarterfinal Victories

Jamie Faus, Goalie, Denver

Denver Men's Lacrosse Goalie Jamie Faus Michigan

Denver Men’s Lacrosse Goalie Jamie Faus finished the game with 11 saves on his way to an astounding 68 percent save rate. In the fourth quarter, he was able to stymie a lethal UNC attack unit and prevented them from extending their lead late in the game.

Faus replaced Ryan LaPlante in Denver’s dramatic come-from-behind victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the quarterfinal round. He provided a spark off the bench after Denver trailed by six early in the game.

Faus finished the game with 11 saves on his way to an astounding 68 percent save rate. In the fourth quarter, he was able to stymie a lethal UNC attack unit and prevented them from extending their lead late in the game.

If Denver is to take down Syracuse, it will need excellent play in goal. Although LaPlante was the go-to guy for most of the season, Faus’ recent success will earn him the start in Philadelphia.

Denver has a great chance of beating the No. 1 seed, Syracuse, but a good game from Faus could make the feat much easier for the Pioneers as they look to hoist their first national championship trophy this weekend.

Dominic Lamolinara, Goalie, Syracuse

Syracuse needed all four quarters to take down a gritty Yale team in the quarterfinal round. The game was a defensive battle that the Orange eventually won by a score of 7-6.

Lamolinara kept Yale at bay as Syracuse’s offense struggled for most of the game. He made six stops in the second and third quarters when SU failed to score and also intercepted the Bulldogs’ final desperation pass into the middle with four seconds left to close out the game.

“Dom, week in and week out, is playing on his head,” senior defenseman Brian Megill said. “He really bailed us out at the end with that doorstep save and then picking off that last pass with four seconds left. My hat goes off to him.”

Lamolinara made eight saves in the victory over the Bulldogs, but will surely see more shots against a fast-paced Denver offense. Denver scored 19 goals in the first round against Albany, followed by 12 against UNC.

Denver will look to push the pace in this game, especially after watching the ‘Cuse defense struggle against Yale’s Brandon Mangan. Lamolinara will provide the last line of defense and must make saves to keep his team in the game.

If Lamolinara can achieve a 60 percent save rate, Syracuse will have a chance. If he does not, it may be a long day for head coach John Desko and the Syracuse Orange.
