NCAA Lacrosse: Stanford Women’s Lacrosse (14-6) Stays Close Early, Loses 15-8 To #2 Northwestern (18-2) On May 12 In NCAA Tournament

The Stanford women’s lacrosse team’s historic season came to a close Saturday afternoon as it fell to Northwestern, 15-8, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Stanford (14-6) was unable to overcome a 7-1 scoring run and a 12-2 draw control advantage by Northwestern (18-2) in the second half.
Julia Burns led Stanford with three goals, while five Cardinal added a goal apiece. Rachel Ozer tied Burns with a team-best three points on a goal and two assists.
“I was really proud of the team’s effort throughout the entire game,” head coach Amy Bokker said. “Northwestern is a great opponent and reigning national champions so we knew we were going to have our work cut out for us.”
After a first half that saw Stanford and Northwestern trade the first six goals of the game, Northwestern took control in the second, fueled by its draw control advantage. The Wildcats maintained a majority of the possession in the second and Stanford was forced to spread its defense to challenge for control.
The Wildcats outscored the Cardinal, 9-4, and held a 15-7 shot advantage in the second half. Northwestern finished the game with 29 shots to Stanford’s 15.
Despite its time of possession being limited, Stanford continued to battle and pulled within 13-8 with 6:19 to play after Julia Burns scored her second and third goals of the game. However, Northwestern continued to control a majority of the possession and added two more goals to close the game.
After a somewhat slow start to the game by both teams, Stanford and Northwestern traded a series of goals in a span of 12:36 and found themselves tied 3-3.

“It’s awesome to be able to advance in the NCAA Tournament,” head coach Amy Bokker said. “We set our goals high this season and it’s something we’re really proud of. We feel fortunate to be able to compete against Northwestern on Sunday.”
Lucy Dikeou led Stanford with three goals, followed by Farr and Julia Burns who tallied two apiece, and Anna Kim with one.
Stanford had a terrific defensive game holding Notre Dame (12-5) to two goals in the first half for the second time this season. Lyndsey Munoz was strong in goal and made six saves, while Megan Lerner caused a team-best two turnovers and claimed two draw controls.
The game was a defensive battle for most of the game as both Stanford and Notre Dame held the other team scoreless for different lengthy stretches of the match.

NCAA Lacrosse: “2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championships” Announces Brackets With Maryland Ranked #1 Followed By Northwestern, North Carolina And Syracuse; Stanford Vs Notre Dame On May 12, Denver Vs Jacksonville On May 10

With a perfect 19-0 record, Maryland earned the No. 1 seed in the largest NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse tournament in history. The field expanded from 16 teams last year to 26 teams in 2013, in response the increased number of conferences sponsoring the sport. While the Terps are making their 29th postseason appearance, six other teams are in the big dance for the first time. Stony Brook, Denver, Jacksonville, High Point, Canisius and UConn will all play their first NCAA tournament games on May 11.
“I’m so glad we’re at 26, and I’m so glad we’re on the inside. It’s awesome and I’m so excited for the team,” Pioneers coach Liza Kelly said.
Kelly, who is also a longtime member of the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse committee, said the IWLCA had been pressing for tournament expansion since she was an assistant at Towson in the late 1990s.
“We had enough quality teams that the tournament needed to expand. With the great expansion we’ve seen, especially in the Atlantic Sun and in the Big South, and having 100 teams overall, having a 16-team bracket just didn’t make sense. Under the old format, with that many teams, half the games would have been play-in games,” she said.
The Pioneers and the Dolphins will meet in a first-round matchup between first-time NCAA tournament participants in Gainesville, Fla. The winner of the game will advance to play No. 5 seed Florida in the second round.
NCAA Lacrosse: Stanford Women’s Lacrosse Defeated #11 And Top-Seeded Denver 7-6 On May 4 To Win Its Eighth MPSF Tournament Championship

The Stanford women’s lacrosse team claimed its eighth Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament title in nine years Saturday, as it defeated top-seeded Denver, 7-6.
With the victory, Stanford earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out its first-round matchup on Sunday at 6 p.m. (PT).
The championship match was a tight-knit affair that saw the MPSF’s top two teams tied or separated by just a goal for a majority of the match.
“We really stuck to our game plan and worked those great possessions and waited for our opportunities,” head coach Amy Bokker said. “I thought the defensive end and Lyndsey [Munoz] played outstanding.”
Goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz had a great game, making 10 saves – including a free-position stop with just 33 seconds on the clock to preserve a one goal lead. Munoz also picked up a team-best four ground balls.
“She was really locked in all tournament so I hope this gives her a lot of confidence going into the NCAA Tournament,” Bokker said. “She did awesome and was really focused, and knew she wanted to win a championship.”
Stanford had a balanced scoring attack, getting two goals from Hannah Farr, Anna Kim and Lucy Dikeou. Rachel Ozer also found the back of the net, increasing her team-leading season total to 47.

NCAA Lacrosse: UC Davis Women’s Lacrosse Upsets #14 Stanford 15-14 In Overtime On April 25

Senior attacker Elizabeth Datino scored on a second-chance crease roll with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime to lift UC Davis to a 15-14 upset of 14th-ranked Stanford in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s lacrosse Senior Night finale at Aggie Stadium Thursday night.

It also represents the first time the Aggies have ever defeated a team ranked in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I Top 20.

Landry also recorded four assists for six total points while Jordan chipped in another three. Sophomore goalkeeper Kai Murphy recorded 11 saves.
For Stanford, sophomore attacker Kyle Fraser matched Datino’s total of five goals. Sophomore Hannah Farr and freshman Julia Burns each posted three goals with an assist. Junior goalkeeper Lyndsey Munoz finished with 11 saves.
Although Farr drew first blood with her unassisted goal just 75 seconds into the contest, UC Davis seized an early lead with three unanswered through the 10th minute. The Cardinal managed to cut the lead to a single goal on two different occasions in the first half. The Aggies clung to a 5-4 lead at halftime.
