High School Lacrosse: “Nike/US Lacrosse West Region Boys Lacrosse Top 10″ Features #1 St. Ignatius Prep Followed By Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon, Cherry Creek And St. Margaret’s Episcopal

Nike US Lacrosse West Region High School Lacrosse Top 10

The best against the best
A victory over La Costa Canyon helped propel Torrey Pines into the top seed of the CIF San Diego Section Open Division boys’ lacrosse playoffs.
The Falcons will play the No. 8 seed Rancho Bernardo next weekend. Torrey Pines coach Jon Zissi is in favor of the new playoff format.
“We play a dangerous Rancho Bernardo team on Saturday in round one,” Zissi said. “The Open Division is a good idea – pits the best against the best, so there is one true champion of San Diego.”
La Costa Canyon earned the second seed and plays No. 7 seed San Marcos (Calif.). If the rankings hold, Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon would play for a third time this season, this time for the title. The teams split their regular season meetings and have played four consecutive one-goal games; with two going double overtime.
A surging Cathedral Catholic team earned the third seed and will play No. 6 Bishop’s School. Poway is the fourth-seeded team and will play No. 5 Coronado.

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 21-1

The Wildcats have established themselves as one of the nation’s elite programs. St. Ignatius bounced back from a loss to Chaminade (N.Y.) with four consecutive victories, outscoring opponents 71-20. The Wildcats closed out the regular season game with a 9-8 victory over Bellarmine Prep (Calif.) for their fourth consecutive West Catholic Athletic League championship.

2. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 14-3

The Falcons avenged an earlier season loss to La Costa Canyon (Calif.) by winning the rematch 4-3. That victory was the catalyst for two more victories over Bishop’s School (Calif.) and Carlsbad (Calif.), resulting in a No. 1 seed in the section playoffs.

3. La Costa Canyon (Calif.), 16-3

After losing to rival Torrey Pines, the Mavericks bounced back with victories over Rancho Bernardo (Calif.) and Coronado (Calif.). La Costa Canyon takes on a tough San Marcos (Calif.) in the playoffs and could very well see Torrey Pines again for a rubber match later in the postseason.

4. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 12-5

The Bruins earned the top seed in the state playoffs by closing out the regular season with two victories. Cherry Creek opened its playoffs run with victories over Denver East (Colo.) in the first round and Colorado Academy (Colo.) in the quarterfinals.

5. St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.), 21-4

The Tartans continued their impressive run with a 12-8 victory over Corona del Mar (Calif.) for the Orange County championship. St. Margaret’s followed that up with a 15-8 victory over Harvard-Westlake (Calif.) in the US Lacrosse CIF Southern-Section championship. The Tartans are riding an 18-game winning streak and have not lost since March 19.

6. Bellevue (Wash.), 16-2

The Wolverines have established themselves as the team to beat in the Washington State playoffs by putting together another impressive campaign. Bellevue has yet to lose a game to an in-state opponent and closes out the regular season on the road against Curtis (Wash.) and Skyline (Wash.).

7. Corona del Mar (Calif.), 18-3

The Sea Kings lost 12-7 to St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.) for the Orange County championship. Nonetheless, Corona del Mar continues to be one of the top programs on the West Coast and reload for next season.

8. Cathedral Catholic (Calif.), 18-2

The Dons are riding a 15-game winning streak. Cathedral Catholic earned a No. 4 seed in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division boys’ lacrosse playoffs.

9. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 13-5

The Raiders grabbed some momentum heading into the playoffs with three consecutive victories to close out the regular season. Regis Jesuit then knocked off Highland Ranch (Colo.) and Mullen (Colo.) in the playoffs.

10. Arapahoe (Colo.), 14-3

The Warriors rebounded from a loss to Regis Jesuit in the regular season with a victory over Mountain Vista (Colo.). Arapahoe advanced in the state playoffs and beat Mountain Vista before upsetting No. 2 seed Columbine (Colo.).

Orange County High School Boys Lacrosse Profile: St. Margaret’s Boys Lacrosse Senior Goalie Jeff Askin Led The Tartans To A Fourth Consecutive Trinity League Title

Jeff Askin of St. Margaret's is the boys lacrosse athlete of the week for May 3, 2010.

St. Margaret’s Boys Lacrosse senior goalkeeper Jeff Askin has had an outstanding season for the Tartans, the No. 3-ranked team in Orange County.

He was one of the key reasons why St. Margaret’s captured the Trinity League title outright with a 10-0 record, according to Coach Gerry Manning.

It was the Tartans fourth consecutive Trinity League title and third outright.

“Jeff is the heart of our defense,” St. Margaret’s assistant coach Bryan Harney said. “He is always calm under pressure, directs traffic in our defensive sets and clears, and is a real leader on the field for us. Part of our defensive look relies on Jeff to make many saves from 15-20 yards out and I think his goals against average (3.27) and save percentage (.720) speaks to our success this year.

Orange County High School Boys Lacrosse: St. Margaret’s Boys Lacrosse (11-2) Defeated Santa Margarita 7-6 On April 16 To Remain Undefeated In Trinity League

The Tartans scored 5 goals in the second half to defeat the Santa Margarita Eagles 7-6 Friday night in front of a sizable crowd at Mission Viejo HS.

Junior attackman Mitchell Pok had  2 goals including what turned out to be the game winner as the Tartans battled back from a 3 goal deficit at half time.  The late rally started at the end of the third quarter with a goal from Sophomore midfielder Chris Bauer, and continued with goals from Junior James Murayama and Senior Jacob Graham.

The Eagles were able to regain the lead midway through the fourth quarter but were unable to hold on as a man-down situation led to a flurry of shots that hit the post before Sophomore Matthew Duenes found a loose ball in front of Santa Margarita’s goal. Duenes deftly switched hands and lobbed a pass across the goal mouth to Pok who buried it to give the Tartans a one-goal lead.

The Tartan defense led by Senior goaltender Jeff Askin, kept the eagles at bay for the next three minutes until a late penalty forced Askin out of the game and the Tartans into a man-down situation.

In lacrosse, personal fouls committed by goaltenders result in a timeserving penalty to be served by said goaltender.  So, with thirty-six seconds remaining in the game, the Tartans called upon the back up goalkeeper: Freshman Brandon Suchand.

Suchand preserved the win by making a phenomenal save off of a twenty-yard shot by the Eagles and quickly sent the ball downfield as time expired.

With the win the Tartans improve to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in Trinity League play.

All of the action from Friday night is featured as COX 3’s televised “Game of the Week” which can be seen Monday April 19 at 8 p.m. and again on Thursday April 22 at 8 p.m.

Current 2010 record: 9-2 (6-0 in Trinity League)
Past League record: 2006 (10-0 Coastal League – CIF – SD); 2007-present (20-2 Trinity League)

Celebrating its 10th year of existence, the St. Margaret’s Tartans Boys’ Lacrosse program is one of the oldest and consistently most successful programs in Orange County. The success of the program derives from the Tartan lacrosse mission: to honor the game of lacrosse with Tartan Pride and respect for all.

After winning the State Club Championship in 2005, St. Margaret’s was the first CIF approved Boys’ program in Orange County, playing in the CIF –San Diego Section for the 2006 year, going undefeated in the Coastal Conference and reaching the CIF Quarterfinals. Since the establishment of the CIF-Southern Section for Lacrosse in 2007, St. Margaret’s has won the Trinity league all of its first three years, and reached the Orange County finals in 2008.

The boys program is part of a partnership of focus on lacrosse and the multi-sport student-athlete at SMES, as the girls program has competed at the CIF level since 2004 in CIF-SD, won the Southern Section title in 2008, and has four graduates who played at the Division I level. The 2010 boys’ program boasts 30 players who are multi-sport athletes (26 play Football, 4 run Cross Country, 11 play Soccer, 2 play Basketball, and 3 are Wrestlers). Three 2010 varsity players compete in three sports: Senior Fernando Almejo (Football, Soccer, Lacrosse); Junior Davis Edwards (Football, Basketball, Lacrosse); and Sophomore Matt Duenes (Football, Basketball, Lacrosse). Fourteen (14) former Boys’ Tartans have played college level lacrosse at the Division I, Division 3, and Club level, and one, Kyle Morrison, is the Head Lacrosse Coach at Cal-St. Fullerton. Four Tartans have earned US Lacrosse High School All-American honors, and two have earned Academic All-American honors. Finally, the team serves others through the Bread for the Moment charity at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, providing food for those in need.

The Tartans are coached by Head Coach Gerry Manning, the founder of the program and the only head coach in SMES Boys’ Lacrosse history. The team’s assistant coaches are Bryan Harney, Jason Leneau, Mark Warren, and Pete Clark. Assistant Coach Jason Leneau earned an NCAA Division I title as a member of the 1999 University of Virginia Championship team, and played for the MLL as a member of the Los Angeles Riptide
