National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth Announce Final 23-Player Roster For 2012 Season Home Opener On January 14

Today marks the National Lacrosse League’s roster deadline, and the Washington Stealth has announced the 23 players that will be on the active roster when the 2012 season begins on January 14.

The roster features many of the names that led the Stealth to back-to-back Western Division titles, with three offseason acquisitions added to the mix.

“The decisions this season were very difficult as we had a tremendously talented group in camp battling for limited number of roster spots,” said Stealth General Manager Doug Locker about dwindling the 37-player training camp roster down to 23. “Our staff made some tough decisions, but ultimately this roster is deep, very talented and one that we feel gives us the opportunity to compete at the top echelon of the league this season.”

On the offensive end, the majority of the group that has led the NLL in scoring the past two seasons remains in tact. The right side continues to be led by two-time NLL All-Pro Rhys Duch and Jeff Zywicki, one of the Stealth’s all-time scoring leaders. Rookie Brett Hickey, who was drafted by the Stealth in the fifth round (43rd overall) of the 2011 NLL Entry Draft, earned his spot as a right-handed forward after an impressive training camp that included a hat trick in a scrimmage against the Colorado Mammoth.

The left side of the offense has four veteran forwards, including All-Pro Lewis Ratcliff, who has more points than any other player in the NLL over the last two seasons. He’s joined by ten-year NLL vet Cam Sedgwick and Cliff Smith, who the Stealth acquired via trade last season. Rounding out the lefties is offseason free agent signing Dean Hill, who spent the last two seasons with the Edmonton Rush.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth Defeat Toronto Rock 14-13 In Overtime Dec 10 On “Great Night For NLL”

The Stealth and Rock have faced each other in each of the last two NLL Championship Games, each winning once. The energy at the LEC was electric from the moment the doors opened prior to the 7pm PST face-off. The NLL was back in British Columbia for a night, seven years after the Vancouver Ravens left town. Even NLL Commissioner George Daniel felt the energy in the air, tweeting during the event, “Great night for the NLL in BC. Thank you Langley Events Centre.” The end result was a 14-13 overtime victory for the Stealth, thanks to a game-tying goal by Rhys Duch with just over 30 seconds remaining in regulation and a Lewis Ratcliff tally 31 seconds into the overtime period.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth Looks To Compete In Third Straight NLL Championship Game In 2012

“It’s going to be another exciting year of Stealth lacrosse,” said Stealth President David Takata. “Having competed in the last two NLL Championship Games and still bitter from a one goal loss to the Toronto Rock last year, our players are hungry to hit the floor and bring the Champion’s Cup back to Washington. We have one of the best products in all of sports and off the floor, and we have a number of great events planned for the season that we know our growing fan base will love.”

One of those events will take place on Opening Night, when the Stealth hosts the Calgary Roughnecks on Saturday, January 14 at the Comcast Arena.  The Stealth will be raising their 2011 Western Division Championship banner and hosting a special fundraiser for the American Red Cross. The home opener is always one the team’s best attended games and fans are urged to purchase tickets early to get the best seats.

Takata noted, “We open the season facing one of our toughest western rivals, the Calgary Roughnecks, and finish at home against two eastern teams sporting a combined 10 winner’s plates on the Champion’s Cup. Fans can expect a special year in 2012 and we’re making it easy to catch several games for those unable to purchase a full season package.”

National League Lacrosse: CBS Sports Network To Broadcast 8 NLL Games In 2012 And 2013

The National Lacrosse League has announced that the league has reached a two-year agreement with CBS Sports Network to air NLL games during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The national television package for the 2012 season features five regular-season and three post-season games, including the 2012 NLL Championship Game.

All games will air live on Saturday evenings, marking the first primetime weekly television package in league history. All games will also be broadcast in High Definition.

“We’re excited to have a television partner that is committed to the sport of lacrosse and the National Lacrosse League”, said NLL Commissioner George Daniel. “CBS Sports Network is a fast-growing network, and we look forward to showcasing the hard-hitting and high-scoring action of the NLL.”

“The NLL adds to our extensive line-up of lacrosse programming and we’re thrilled to showcase the compelling action nationally,” said Ross Molloy, Vice President, CBS Sports Network. “Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports and we’re excited to further serve the passionate fan base.”

In an article that appears in this week’s edition of The Sports Business Journal, CBS Sports Network President David said, “We’re making a big lacrosse commitment at the college and pro levels, because while it’s seen a lot of growth recently, we still see a lot of potential remaining”.

Major League Lacrosse: MLL Championship Game Features Boston Cannons Vs Hamilton Nationals On Aug 28

The 2011 Major League Lacrosse Championship is set, and it will be the Hamilton Nationals who will face off with the Boston Cannons tomorrow, after their 11-9 win over the Denver Outlaws.

The second semifinal of Saturday’s MLL Championship Weekend action started much like the first, with the Nationals taking an early 6-1 lead. But the Outlaws came back, just like the Cannons, to make the score 6-5 at the half.

The Nats pulled a way a bit in the third quarter, building a 10-6 lead, but Billy Bitter’s third goal of the game cut the score to 10-8 in Hamilton’s favor going into the fourth.

A goal from Peet Poillon at the 12:49 mark made the score 10-9 Nationals. The comeback had begun, just like the game that took place before. With 8:42 left, Casey Powell, who joined the Nationals two weeks ago, put in a goal to give the Nats a 11-9 lead they would not relinquish.

The rain and Hurricane Irene elements were definitely a factor in this game, with the turf wet several players were slipping and sliding. Jesse Schwartzman, the Outlaws goaltender, had a very rough time, despite being the best goalie in MLL this season, statistically.

The Nationals and Cannons will face off for the MLL Championship at 3 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and The Lacrosse Radio Network via In Lax We Trust, with pregame coverage (by me) starting at 2:15 p.m. Sunday.
