MCLA Lacrosse Logo

We’re into the postseason now and there are a lot of automatic qualifying bids to be fought over. One bid that is already in the bag belongs to Texas, who grabbed the LSA automatic qualifier by beating Texas State in the final. It’s the third straight trip to the dance for the Longhorns and the seventh in program history.
Colorado State remained comfortably on top of the poll with no movement from last week among the Top 8.
Who’s Hot
Stanford (+3): The Cardinal was starting to lose some of their luster, but a clutch victory over California restored their reputation.
Who’s Not
California (-4): Stanford smacked the Bears around in the regular season finale, but they’ll meet again in the WCLL semifinals.
Virginia Tech (Out): There was a lot of promise for the Hokies this spring, but they just couldn’t find a way to win the big game.

Conference tournaments continue this week with seven more AQs up for grabs, from the ALC, America East, Big East, CAA, Ivy League, MAAC and MPSF.
Who’s Hot?
Virginia (+7): The Cavaliers salvaged their NCAA playoff hopes by beating Duke in the ACC quarterfinals before falling to Maryland in the semifinals to finish with a 9-9 record. Virginia shot up seven spots as a result.
Who’s Not?
Stanford: The Cardinal dropped from No. 14 to out of the Top 20, after losing to unranked UC Davis in overtime and edging California 14-13 on Sunday. A rematch with Cal awaits in the MPSF tournament.

It’s the last week of the regular season. In some cases, the coaches’ poll reflects NCAA tournament likelihoods — such as Ohio State, a bubble-in team right now, rising to No. 10 in the country. In other cases, the poll includes teams that likely won’t make the NCAA tournament (Johns Hopkins at No. 14) and teams that definitely won’t make it (Virginia at No. 20). Nonetheless, the poll is good barometer to look at as we enter a week of conference tournaments and teams’ last chances to extend their seasons.
Who’s Hot?
Cornell (+4): While UNC is the consensus No. 1 among the coaches, the Big Red and Rob Pannell seem to be getting red hot at just the right time and are now ranked second. Pannell put together a nine-point effort in Cornell’s 17-11 win Saturday against Princeton and the Big Red host the Ivy League tournament, as the league’s top seed, beginning Friday.
Syracuse (+4): The Orange finally won or lost a game by more than one goal, beating Notre Dame handily, 10-4, on Saturday at the Big City Classic. Before that, Syracuse has played in all one-goal games, winning four and losing one, to Hobart.
Who’s Not?
Maryland (-5): The Terps, who looked dominant to start the season, bowed out in the ACC tournament semifinals to Virginia. It’s offense is sputtering, scoring 18 goals in the last three games.
Who’s New?
Virginia (19): It’s little consolation for your season ending, but Virginia finishes its year, at least, in the Top 20.
Villanova (20): The Wildcats are the top seed for this weekend’s Big East tournament, which they host. They need at least one win the tournament to be NCAA tournament eligible.

Maryland continues its dominance, earning unanimous No. 1 honors for the fourth straight week, as the season begins to enter conference tournament mode. Six leagues — the ACC, Atlantic Sun, Atlantic 10, Big South, NEC and Patriot League, will decide champions this weekend and those six winners will have their tickets punched to the new 26-team NCAA tournament.
Who’s Hot?
Duke (+2): This is more a reflection of recent losses by Georgetown and Notre Dame, whom the Blue Devils jumped in the poll, but Duke nontheless has won two in a row entering the ACC tournament.
Who’s Not?
Virginia (-3): The Cavaliers continued to slide down the poll. A 10-5 win over Virginia Tech was not impressive in the minds of pollsters.

In the match-up of the top two teams in the country, defending national champion Colorado State removed all doubt as to the best team in the land with an 8-3 victory over rival Colorado. The win was classic CSU, and one that harkened back to the Rams’ performance at the national tournament last year spring, when they ground down the opposition.
Colorado (rightfully) remains in the second slot, followed by Chapman and Arizona State. Brigham Young rounds out the Top 5.
Who’s Hot
Cal Poly (+4): Hmm. Cal Poly. Where I have heard that name before? Oh, right, last year’s national runner-up. Signs of life for the Mustangs.
Who’s Not
Stanford (-4): The Cardinal is hitting some turbulence late in the season. A loss to Cal will make them the WCLL No. 4 seed.
Oregon State (-4): The Beavers got put in their place by rival Oregon, snapping an 11-game winning streak.

With former No. 1 Denver falling to Fairfield on Saturday, North Carolina takes over the top spot in the coaches’ poll ahead of this weekend’s ACC tournament. The Tar Heels received six first-place votes. Notre Dame got three.
Who’s Hot?
No one: Only one team jumped more than one spot, and that was Bucknell, which moved from 15th to a tie for 13th with Ohio State.
Who’s Not?
Syracuse (-4): As Patrick Stevens wrote in his latest round of Bracketology, “The erratic Orange have played five straight one-goal games against a fascinating medley of opponents: Cornell, Georgetown, Hobart, Princeton and Rutgers.” This drop reflects last week’s loss to Hobart in addition to a one-goal win over Georgetown on Saturday.
Denver (-3): One-goal games are bound to happen, but Denver has played three OT games in a row. The Pioneers narrowly beat Bellarmine and Loyola before finally falling to Fairfield on Saturday. They still remain No. 1 in RPI, however.
Who’s New?
Army (19): Two days after punching its ticket to Patriot League tournament, Army earned its first national ranking of the season. Army, which has won four of its last five games, is the third seed in this weekend’s Patriot League tourney, where it faces Bucknell on Friday.
Fairfield (20): The Stags enter the Top 20 after downing top-ranked Denver in overtime.

The two undefeated teams at the top of the polls finally get their chance to figure out who is the real No. 1. The fact that it features one of the best rivalries in the MCLA – Colorado State vs. Colorado – is just gravy. There’s a good chance that this is just the first of two meetings (and possibly three), so it doesn’t end on Saturday. However, it will eliminate any debate about who is the top dog at this point.
Chapman hops into the third chair vacated by Arizona State and the Panthers are followde by BYU and UC Santa Barbara.
Who’s Hot
Grand Canyon (+6): Life is good in the desert for the ‘Lopes. They knocked off ASU and are looking good for a Greenville trip.
Who’s Not
Arizona State (-3): The Sun Devils scrambled back nicely to take Grand Canyon to OT, but couldn’s seal the deal.
Davenport (-3): The Panthers were out-gunned by Pittsburgh, but they could make amends against Sparty.

The latest IWLCA Division I coaches’ poll remains steady at the top, with Nos. 1 through 5 unchanged. That could change by the next poll, however, as No. 5 Syracuse hosts seventh-ranked Notre Dame on Friday and fourth-ranked Northwestern travels to play third-ranked Florida on Saturday.
The ACC has the most schools in the poll with five, including the top two spots, but Virginia has dropped from the Top 15 after a two-loss week.
Who’s Hot?
Loyola (+4): The Greyhounds’ 14-13 double overtime win over Notre Dame on Friday night moved Loyola to 3-1 in Big East play. Loyola has won five of its last six to creep above .500 with a 7-6 overall record.
Who’s Not?
Virginia (-5): The Cavaliers are below .500, at 7-8, after losing to Northwestern and Johns Hopkins last week. The latter defeat, a 9-8 decision, was the Cavaliers’ fourth one-goal loss of the season. Additionally, Virginia is winless in the ACC and will look for its first conference win Wednesday against Virginia Tech.

It’ll be an old-school showdown this weekend when Sonoma State meets up with UC Santa Barbara and, just like the days of yore, the two teams will be sporting Top 10 rankings. The Gauchos bumped up a spot to No. 6 while the Seawolves crept up to No. 7 entering Saturday’s clash.
The top three teams stayed the same, with Colorado State and Colorado having a stranglehold on the top spots and Arizona State in the mix.
Who’s Hot
Connecticut (+4): The Huskies are finally playing games on a consistent basis, so it’s not surprising they’re moving up the polls.
Who’s Not
Georgia Tech (-7): It looked like the Yellow Jackets were going to redefine what defense is in the MCLA. Now? Not so much.
Who’s New
Arizona: It’s been a back-and-forth year in the polls for the Wildcats. This week, it’s forth, as the ‘Zone jumps back in at No. 22.

Brigham Young’s ascension in the US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) rankings has set the stage for a major weekend of non-varsity action in the RMLL and SWLL, respectively, as No. 1 Colorado State will face No. 2 BYU and No. 3 Georgia meets No. 4 Florida Club… Colorado State remained the unanimous No. 1 in this week’s WCLA Division I poll, but Brigham Young is not far behind. The Rams also will face pesky No. 15 Westminster, which took BYU to overtime before the Cougars prevailed… Elsewhere, Michigan Club fell from No. 3 to No. 7 after a loss to Colorado Club… UC Santa Barbara continues to tick up the rankings despite being inactive since March 15. The Gauchos face Rhode Island and Texas this weekend… Undefeated No. 9 Minnesota topped St. Cloud State 18-0 last week and will play in Michigan this weekend against Michigan State and Michigan Club… Miami (Ohio) hung on to the 20th spot in the rankings despite a 3-5 overall record.
