NCAA Lacrosse: Johns Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse To Join “Big Ten” Conference Along With Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State And Rutgers

Big Ten Lacrosse

The Blue Jays would join Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers presumably after the 2014 season, when Maryland and Rutgers are slated to leave the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East, respectively.

After 130 years as an independent in men’s lacrosse, Johns Hopkins will be  joining the Big Ten. An announcement has been scheduled for Monday morning when the university  will confirm the move, according to sources and a published report.

The news conference will be held at 11 a.m. at the Cordish Lacrosse Center on  Johns Hopkins’ campus in Baltimore.

Big Ten and university officials would not comment on the move.

The addition of Johns Hopkins will give the Big Ten its sixth member – a  requirement for the conference to earn an automatic qualifier to the NCAA  tournament.

The announcement comes 17 days after a seven-member special committee  recommended May 17 that the university seek conference affiliation after the  team had spent the past 130 years as an independent.

During an ensuing conference call with athletic director Tom Calder and coach  Dave Pietramala, Pietramala had said that he would like the Blue Jays to begin  conference play in 2015.

Johns Hopkins’ move is the latest in the conference realignment wave in men’s  lacrosse. In 2011, Syracuse announced that it would leave the Big East for the  ACC, and Notre Dame followed the Orange in September. The month before the  Fighting Irish’s announcement, Loyola, which captured the national championship  in 2012, said it would switch from the Eastern College Athletic Conference to  the Patriot League for the 2014 season.

In November, Maryland and Rutgers announced that they would join the Big  Ten.

NCAA Lacrosse: Ohio State Men’s Lacrosse Sr. Attacker Logan Schuss Named To 2013 USILA All-American Second Team; Dominique Alexander, Jesse King And Joe Meurer Named To Honorable Mention All-American Teams

Ohio State Men's Lacrosse 2013 USILA All-Americans

Ohio State senior attackman Logan Schuss has been named a Second Team All-American and senior midfielder Dominique Alexander, sophomore midfielder Jesse King and junior defenseman Joe Meurer have been named Honorable Mention All-Americans by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), the organization announced Thursday.

Schuss is the first Buckeye named to a USILA first, second or third team twice and the first Ohio State player selected for the second team since Kevin Buchanan in 2008. Schuss is also the first Buckeye to earn USILA All-America accolades three times; he was an honorable mention selection as a freshman in 2010 (the first true freshman in Ohio State history named an All-American) and a third team pick in 2012 as a junior. Ten Buckeyes have earned USILA honors twice.

In Ohio State history, six Buckeyes including Schuss have been named to the USILA’s first, second or third teams. He joins Joe Bonanni (third team, 2012), Buchanan (second team, 2008), Greg Bice (second team, 2004), Skip Van Bourgondien (second team, 1971) and Glenn Rudy (third team, 1966).

Alexander, King and Meurer give Ohio State 39 USILA Honorable Mention All-America accolades all-time. The Buckeyes have had at least one All-America selection each year since 2008, totaling 13 in that span (two second team, two third team, nine honorable mention) and have 20 total honorees since 2000. This is the first time since 2008 and just the second time in program history four Ohio State players have been recognized by the USILA as All-Americans. The 1957 team ranks first with six honorable mention selections.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: Cornell Men’s Lacrosse Dominates #3 Ohio State 16-6 On May 18 To Advance To Final Four

Cornell Men's Lacrosse 16-6 Win over Ohio State 2013 NCAA Lacrosse Championships

The Cornell men’s lacrosse dominated in every facet of the game and advanced to the program’s fourth NCAA Final Four in the last eight years with a 16-6 victory over No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at Maryland’s Byrd Stadium. The Big Red improved to 14-3, while OSU’s season ends at 13-4.
Senior attackmen Steve Mock scored a career-high seven goals, matching a Cornell record for individual goals in an NCAA tournament game, and classmate Rob Pannell one-upped him with eight points (two goals, six assists) to lead an offense that scored 16 goals in the first three quarters in exceeding its efficient production in its first round win over Maryland in the same stadium the week before.
Connor Buczek had three goals and two assists, senior goalkeeper AJ Fiore made 10 saves and junior faceoff man Doug Tesoriero won 16-of-24 to seemingly give the Cornell offense every possession. The Big Red held decisive advantages in shots (37-20), ground balls (39-28), saves (10-8), faceoffs (16-10) and caused turnovers (12-8). It went 1-of-1 on the extra man and held an Ohio State team that entered the day leading the country in 50 percent efficiency on man-up to an 0-for-4 day.
The defense had another huge day in front of Fiore, with Jason Noble (three caused turnovers) and Thomas Keith (three caused turnovers, six ground balls) leading the way. Keith in particular seemed to be all over the field from start to finish. Fiore was outstanding himself, adding five ground ball wins and two caused turnovers to his 10-save effort.
The game was the polar opposite of the last meeting between the two teams in the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes scored first when their goalie went the length of the field and scored and were off and running en route to a 15-7 victory during the first round in 2008. This time, scoring came early and often for attackmen – the ones wearing red.
Midway through the fourth quarter Ohio State took its 16th shot of the game, matching the Big Red’s 16 goals. It was that type of game for the Big Red, who executed every part of the gameplan flawlessly.
Cornell will meet the winner of tomorrow’s game between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 7 Duke on Saturday, May 25 at either noon or 3 p.m. at Philadelphia’s Franklin Financial Field.
