Notre Dame Men's Lacrosse 2013 USILA All-Americans

For the ninth consecutive season the University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse program has produced multiple United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honorees. Jim Marlatt (Jr./M) and Matt Miller (Sr./D) were named to the 2013 USILA All-America Third Team, while Matt Kavanagh (Fr./A) and John Kemp (Sr./G) were honorable mention selections.

Marlatt (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) was Notre Dame’s leading midfield scorer as he tallied 20 goals and 12 assists in addition to picking up 43 ground balls. He notched five multiple-goal games, including a career-high five-goal effort in the 13-5 season-opening victory at Duke. Marlatt had two goals and one assist in the 13-12 overtime win at Denver.

This is the second All-America citation for Marlatt, who received honorable mention accolades last season. He is a two-time first team all-BIG EAST honoree.

Miller (Warrenton, Va./Notre Dame Academy) was an anchor on a Fighting Irish defensive unit that was among the nation’s best all season long. Notre Dame finished the year with an 8.31 goals-against average, which currently ranks 10th nationally. Miller picked up 28 ground balls and was named first team all-BIG EAST. The Fighting Irish captain was an honorable mention All-American last season.

Miller recently was named a USILA Scholar All-American and also is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. He was selected to play in Friday’s USILA/LAXWORLD North/South Game. The Rochester Rattlers selected Miller in the sixth round (44th overall) of January’s Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft.

Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade/Hotchkiss) registered a stellar rookie season with the Irish as he led the team in goals (32) and assists (16). The 32 goals are the most ever for a Notre Dame freshman. Kavanagh combined to post seven goals and three assists in Notre Dame’s two NCAA Championship contests. He had four goals in the first-round win over Detroit (9-7) and then tallied a game-high six points on three goals and three assists in the quarterfinal setback to Duke (12-11).

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #7 Duke Men’s Lacrosse Rallies To Beat #2 Notre Dame 12-11 In Quarterfinals To Advance To Final Four

Duke Men's Lacrosse vs Notre Dame 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships

Senior captain David Lawson tallied a career-high five goals to lead Duke to a thrilling 12-11 comeback victory over No. 2 seed Notre Dame in front of 7,749 fans at the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinal at Lucas Oil Stadium. The win launches Duke to its seventh straight championship weekend appearance and ninth overall in program history.
Duke (14-5) scored the game’s final three goals to rally from an 11-9 deficit in the fourth quarter and capture its second straight one-goal NCAA Tournament victory. The Blue Devils avenged the regular season loss to Notre Dame (11-5) in the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2010.
“I thought they [Notre Dame] were brilliant today,” said head coach John Danowski. “Their faceoff guy was terrific. Their goalie was tremendous. They shot the ball extremely well. It was one of those games playing against a dear friend Kevin Corrigan that you hate to see someone lose. With that being said, I am extremely proud of our guys from beginning to end. We wanted to play for 60 minutes. We certainly don’t script these endings, last week or this week. We just wanted to play the game. Kyle Turri, while he didn’t have a great day in the goal statistically, comes up with a big save on the outlet. He keeps his poise and allows us to score the tying goal.”
The game was a back-and-forth affair for the entire 60 minutes, featuring nine ties and five lead changes with the largest lead being two goals by both squads. Junior attackman Jordan Wolf had four assists on the day, while classmate Josh Dionne had three tallies in the win.
Trailing 11-9 with 9:29 to play, the Blue Devils defense buckled down and held the Irish scoreless while the offense made the final charge. Duke made it a one-goal game, 11-10, on an unassisted score from junior Christian Walsh with 8:31 to play.
With 3:30 to play and neither team having scored for five minutes, Duke goaltender Kyle Turri came up with his biggest play of the afternoon as he stopped Sean Rogers’ shot on the crease and sent an outlet pass to Greg DeLuca. The senior midfielder raced down the field and found Wolf who quickly dished it to Dionne for the game-tying score with 3:18 to play.
“The defender tripped on the back of the goal,” said Turri. “He came around and I just matched his stick. I kept the stick high, saw it all the way and it was really nice to get the last one.”

NCAA Lacrosse: #2 Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse Trails By Four Goals At Beginning Of Fourth Quarter, Rallies To Defeat Detroit 9-7 On May 11 In First Round Of NCAA Lacrosse Tournament (Video)

No. 2 seed Notre Dame outscored Detroit 6-0 in the fourth quarter to capture a 9-7 victory in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Saturday evening at Arlotta Stadium. Freshman attackman Matt Kavanagh netted a game-high four goals for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame (11-4) entered the final period trailing 7-3, yet scored four goals in the first 4:50 of the quarter to tie the contest. The furious rally began on Kavanagh’s second goal of the game, which came just 48 seconds into the period. Sophomore attackman Conor Doyle scored less than a minute later to slice the Detroit advantage to two (7-5).

Fifth-year senior attackman Sean Rogers deposited his second tally of the day, off an assist from Jim Marlatt, just 48 seconds after Doyle’s goal. The equalizer came from Kavanagh and he then gave the Irish their first lead of the day with 5:27 remaining in the contest. Senior midfielder Ryan Foley registered the game’s final goal with 2:31 left. Rogers assisted on the score.

Notre Dame used a 10-man ride to force Detroit into five failed clears in the fourth quarter. The Fighting Irish won 6-of-7 faceoffs in the final period in addition to outshooting the Titans 16-3 in that stanza.

“Offensively, we didn’t play very well at all and we kind of played into their hands,” Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. “We may have only had a total of seven possessions in the first half and that’s kind of horrific. We knew we had to change that so we waited as long as we thought we could and then went 10-man (ride). You can’t do that for an entire half or else your guys will die. We changed the tempo and then got some possessions and got the ball in space for some of our offensive guys who were able to make plays.”

Goals from Brandon Beauregard and Alex Maini gave Detroit (5-10) a 2-0 lead by the end of the opening quarter. Doyle put the Irish on the board with 12:08 left in the second quarter, but goals from Maini, Beauregard and Mike Birney had the Titans up 5-1 at halftime.
