Northern California High School Lacrosse: Menlo School Girls Lacrosse (9-4) Loses Wild Double-Overtime Game 17-16 To Rival St. Ignatius On April 12

The Menlo School girls’ lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead, gave up nine straight goals, battled its way into double overtime but still dropped a 17-16 nonleague decision to visiting St. Ignatius on Tuesday.

The loss marked the 12th straight year that Menlo coach Jen Lee has lost to the Wildcats. “Menlo came closer than ever, really and truly, to earn a regulation win against its local and legitimate nemesis — St. Ignatius,” Lee said.

Menlo (9-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four straight goals by sophomore middie Ali Kim. The Wildcats, however, then scored nine unanswered goals to grab a 9-5 halftime lead. Menlo trailed by 11-5 with 18:07 left to play before launching a comeback with six straight goals in the span of 8:28 to tie SI at 11 with 8:03 left to play.

Menlo took a 13-12 lead on goals by Kacie Madeira and Michaela Michael, but SI forced overtime with a goal with just 14 seconds left. After SI took a 16-15 lead in the first overtime, Menlo’s Savannah McKinnon raced up the middle, was fouled and passed to junior Sophie Sheeline, who scored to make it 16-16 with just 10 seconds left to play. After taking a break before the second “sudden-victory” overtime, SI finally scored to end the marathon match.

Northern California High School Lacrosse: St. Ignatius Prep Boys Lacrosse Head Coach Chris Packard Interviewed By LaxPower

After serving seven years as assistant coach for the nationally renowned Saint Ignatius Prep (CA) boys’ lacrosse team, Chris Packard had some big shoes to

St. Ignatius Prep Boys Lacrosse Head Coach Chris Packard

fill when he accepted the head coaching position in late 2008.

Since ‘09, Packard has led the Wildcats to a 45-5 overall record and most recently the inaugural WCAL title in ‘10. Packard recently spoke with LaxPower’s Adam Warner:

Talk about your background and how you eventually came to be the head coach at St. Ignatius Prep.
“I grew up on Long Island playing lacrosse and then went to Ithaca (NY) and played at Cornell under Richie Moran and Dave Pietramala. They were really influential on me in terms of giving back to the game. I eventually moved to California, ended up in San Francisco and got recruited by members of the Saint Ignatius alumni, and the position of assistant coach sounded like a fun idea to me. But when [former head coach] Greg Angilly left, things changed a bit. Everything pointed to me and I leapt into it.”

The program has a great tradition of success and only has posted eight total losses since ‘06. What’s the key in your mind to sustaining success over time and not just one season?
“It’s a lot of things. While we’ve been fortunate to have so many talented players over the years, we also haven’t changed our offensive or defensive philosophy since I arrived. It’s the same set defense and offense since I got here in ’02. I learned it at Cornell and adapted it as the game changed. So the freshmen learn it and play it for four years. We harp on being a fundamentally sound team and it’s been successful. The kids know that whether we are up 10 or down 10, we play the exact same way.”

Your program routinely features one of the toughest schedules overall for a West Coast team. How do you think Saint Ignatius Prep would stack up against some of the nation’s top programs in more traditional areas, such as Haverford School, McDonogh or Manhasset?
“I certainly think we could go toe-to-toe with some of those teams, but we’re probably a few steps behind in that our depth would be an issue. It will take some time, but the competition around is getting much better. Those squads are still a bit more skilled than we are, and the depth could end up wearing us down late in the game. But I would welcome playing any teams of that caliber. It would be a great experience.”

Talk about the differences in recruiting on the West Coast. Do you think it’s harder to garner attention in a non-traditional lacrosse region?
“We are blessed with an amazing community and school, and all of the guys we have sent to Division I programs have proven to the coaches that they are good players and good people. Overall, it’s not as difficult as one might think. When I get on the phone with a coach, I’ll tell him all about a kid’s character and background. It’s an easy sell when you know the player, his family and how much work he puts in on the field and in the classroom. We have sent many well-rounded kids to great colleges, and I think it has actually made the recruiting process a lot easier for us.”

How has high school lacrosse in California changed over the past 5-10 years? What’s in store for the future?
“I think we plateaued the last couple of years and now we’re on another upswing. You’ve got more people who are educated about the game – from a coaching and referee standpoint – and that allows youth leagues to flourish. Once you get an athletic kid with the proper skillset who understands the game, it’s easy to teach them how to develop their game as they get older.”

You lost some quality players to graduation last year, but still return a talented team in ’11 that includes the likes of Bobby Gray and Johno Gibbons. What’s the biggest difference between the two teams?
“The 2011 team doesn’t quite have the fanfare of last season’s team. They understand other teams are getting better, so they can’t rely on just one guy, they have to rely on the nucleus of the team. There’s a distinct difference about this group. They know that 30 guys have to be on point to be successful. We have firepower, but the kids realize that it’s 10 on the field and 20 on the bench.”

Northern California High School Lacrosse: Menlo School Girls Lacrosse Defeated Palo Alto 9-8 On March 16

It was only a nonleague clash between two quality girls lacrosse teams, but Menlo School-Atherton and host Palo Alto played like it was the championship of the Peninsula. The Knights edged the Vikings 9-8 in a taut contest on Wednesday.

“It was a battle from the beginning,” Menlo coach Jen Lee said. Sophomore middie defender Nina Kelty fired one in to put Paly on the board first in the opening 44 seconds. Sixteen seconds later, Menlo center Michaela Michael, a sophomore, answered with a goal on a feed from junior middie attacker Elyse Adler.

Up 3-1 with 17:29 to play in the first half, Paly tied it 3-all with unassisted goals from Kelty and senior Emily Benatar. Menlo added a goal from junior middie attacker Sophie Sheeline on a free position shot, then again off a give-and-go sequence from sophomore attacker Brooke Bullington to sophomore middie Ali Kim. With 2:26 to go before the half, Kimmie Flather put in her first of three goals to finish the first half with Menlo leading 5-4. Following the halftime break, the fast pace continued with Paly challenging again in the opening minutes, tying the game again at 5-all. The lead shifted in Paly’s direction when they scored their sixth goal with 12:13 to play. Menlo answered one minute, 10 seconds later for 6-all. This time, the free-position shot was executed by Kim. Menlo went up 7-6, then Paly tied it 7-all.

Northern California High School Lacrosse: San Ramon Valley Boys Lacrosse Defeated St. Ignatius 11-10 On March 5 For Second Consecutive Year

The Wolves (2-0) toppled boys’ lacrosse giant Saint Ignatius Prep for the second consecutive season behind a thrilling 11-10, 2 OT victory on Saturday. After a nerve-racking first overtime that saw both teams exchange a barrage of opportunities, senior attack Chase Miller scored the game-winner in the second OT session off a feed from midfielder Patrick Worstell.

Saint Ignatius Prep is the defending West Catholic Athletic League champions

San Ramon Valley attacker Michael Tagliaferri scored 6 goals against St. Ignatius on March 5.

and a consistently dominant program. Since 2006, the Wildcats have only lost seven games, with two coming by the hands of San Ramon Valley.

“A high school team is only as good as its local youth program,” San Ramon Valley coach Peter Worstell said. “Our current crop of players have been here for a long time and it’s now starting to show. Our mission is to do the same thing that Saint Ignatius has been able to accomplish. We want a team that resonates with the community and develops young men with good traits. We are fortunate and happy that we are building something here that is challenging that great program.”

In the most recent showdown, North Carolina recruit Michael Tagliaferri scored a game-high six goals for San Ramon Valley en route to the win. The Wolves held the Wildcats to only one goal at halftime before giving up nine scores in the second half.

“We felt that they had way too much talent to be down multiple goals for an extended period of time,” Worstell said. “We had 16 unforced turnovers. You can’t hand them the ball that many times and not have it end up in the back of the net. In the third, they took advantage of the opportunities and made their run.”

Along with Miller, Jackson Brown added two goals for San Ramon Valley (2-0) while goalie Cameron Bowlby notched 17 saves. Penn State recruit Jordan Weiss also dished out four assists. For Saint Ignatius Prep, Matt Emery, Johno Gibbons and J.W. McGovern combined to net six goals in the season opener.

California Box Lacrosse: “Cali Lax All-Stars” Youth Box Lacrosse Coach Shaydon Santos Is Bringing “Canadian Box Lacrosse” Skills To West Coast With “Bay Area Super Series” On May 28-30 (Video)

  • FACT #1: 7 out of 8 NCAA scoring leaders come from a Box lacrosse background

FACT #2: Something special is happening in California.

All you East Coasters out there might not have heard about Shaydon Santos and his Cali Lax All-Stars youth box lacrosse teams, but they are making lots of noise in California’s Bay Area. Not only do they have the sweetest uniforms on the planet, their game looks good too.

Basing his teachings in his Canadian Box lacrosse roots, NLL veteran Shaydon Santos is helping american field players out big time: by teaching them Canadian Box lacrosse. ‘Amazing stick skills and working in tight spaces’ are just two of the many benefits field players can draw from
learning  ‘REAL’ box lacrosse skills. So basically; if you wanna be a good
player, practice hard. If you wanna be a great player,…play Box.

With over a decade of NLL experience behind him and some awesome ideas about the future, Shaydon is pretty much revolutionizing the landscape of American youth lacrosse and he wants you to be a part of it.

Each spring Shaydon hosts the Bay Area Super Series, which is the world’s
largest Box lacrosse tournament…oh, and it’s also a field tournament
too. Each year in May over 500 players gather in the Bay Area from all
over the States, Canada, and abroad to put it on the line. By embracing
the ‘hybrid’ nature of his coaching style, Shaydon set up this tourney to
see who the greatest team on the planet is…and what style they play.

The coolest part of all this is that Shaydon has asked me to be a coach,
and along with fellow NLL & MLL vet Tim Booth, we’re working real hard to
