“2013 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships”: #2 Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse Faces #3 North Carolina In Semifinals On May 24 At Villanova

Northwestern Women's Lacrosse vs North Carolina NCAA Semifinals

Once again peaking when it matters most, second-ranked Northwestern heads to Philadelphia and Villanova University this weekend looking to extend one of the most impressive dynasties in collegiate sports. The Wildcats, winners of seven NCAA championships in the last eight years, will try to stay perfect in NCAA semifinal outings (8-0) when they face third-ranked North Carolina to lead off semifinal Friday in Philadelphia.
Northwestern-North Carolina: Series Info
• Just over three months to the day since being dealt its first loss of the season on a rainy February night in Chapel Hill, Northwestern has a second crack at North Carolina this weekend. The Tar Heels emerged as 11-8 winners in the regular-season meeting despite a dominant effort on the draw circle by Northwestern (16-5) — specifically Alyssa Leonard, who had 12 in the game. Nine first-half turnovers by the ‘Cats allowed the hosts to surge to a 7-1 lead less than 15 minutes in, and although NU would cut its deficit to two with 14:40 to play, North Carolina held on for a key early-season win.
• The victory by the Tar Heels in February snapped Northwestern’s four-game winning streak in the series between the two schools, as well as a run of 10 straight wins against ACC opponents by the Wildcats. Despite NU’s lopsided advantage in the all-time series (10-3), the two teams head into Friday’s semifinal matchup with their last four head-to-head meetings having been decided by a total of six goals.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #4 Denver Men’s Lacrosse Comes Back From Six-Down To Beat #5 North Carolina 12-11 To Advance To Final Four; First Team In NCAA Quarterfinal History To Win After Trailing By Five Goals Or More

Denver Men's Lacrosse vs North Carolina 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals

Junior goalie Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) made 11 saves and allowed just five goals in 50:23 to jump-start the fourth-seeded University of Denver men’s lacrosse team’s largest come-from- behind victory under head coach Bill Tierney, a 12-11 win over fifth-seeded North Carolina in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium. Denver is the first team in Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal history to win after trailing by five goals or more.
With the win, the Pioneers advance to their second Final Four in three seasons, and will face top-seeded Syracuse next Saturday.
Senior Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) won 17-of-26 face-offs in the game, including six of the last seven to aid the Pioneers to a 6-1 run to close out the contest. Carraro also picked up a game-high six ground balls.
“North Carolina: what a train that was, trying to stop that coming downhill at us early,” Tierney said. “Mostly, I’m proud of these young men and teammates for persevering. You don’t get too many opportunities in life to fight through such adversity and come back ahead. I’m just proud for everybody at the University of Denver and everybody in our organization.”
On the scoresheet, senior attacker Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) led Denver with six points on his eighth hat trick of the season, to go along with three assists. Sophomore attacker Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, British Columbia) added four goals and an assist, good for his team-leading ninth hat trick of the year. Senior Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) distributed three assists, and classmate Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.) turned in his fourth multi-goal game of the season with two off the bench for the Pioneers. Freshman Gordie Koerber (Baltimore, Md.), junior Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) and sophomore Eric Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) added a goal apiece to round out the scoring for Denver.

NCAA Lacrosse: “2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championships” Announces Brackets With Maryland Ranked #1 Followed By Northwestern, North Carolina And Syracuse; Stanford Vs Notre Dame On May 12, Denver Vs Jacksonville On May 10

2013 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships

With a perfect 19-0 record, Maryland earned the No. 1 seed in the largest NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse tournament in history. The field expanded from 16 teams last year to 26 teams in 2013, in response the increased number of conferences sponsoring the sport. While the Terps are making their 29th postseason appearance, six other teams are in the big dance for the first time. Stony Brook, Denver, Jacksonville, High Point, Canisius and UConn will all play their first NCAA tournament games on May 11.
“I’m so glad we’re at 26, and I’m so glad we’re on the inside. It’s awesome and I’m so excited for the team,” Pioneers coach Liza Kelly said.
Kelly, who is also a longtime member of the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse committee, said the IWLCA had been pressing for tournament expansion since she was an assistant at Towson in the late 1990s.
“We had enough quality teams that the tournament needed to expand. With the great expansion we’ve seen, especially in the Atlantic Sun and in the Big South, and having 100 teams overall, having a 16-team bracket just didn’t make sense. Under the old format, with that many teams, half the games would have been play-in games,” she said.
The Pioneers and the Dolphins will meet in a first-round matchup between first-time NCAA tournament participants in Gainesville, Fla. The winner of the game will advance to play No. 5 seed Florida in the second round.

NCAA Lacrosse: Latest USILA Coaches Poll Ranks North Carolina Men’s Lacrosse #1 Followed By Cornell, Denver, Loyola And Syracuse

USILA Header I

It’s the last week of the regular season. In some cases, the coaches’ poll reflects NCAA tournament likelihoods — such as Ohio State, a bubble-in team right now, rising to No. 10 in the country. In other cases, the poll includes teams that likely won’t make the NCAA tournament (Johns Hopkins at No. 14) and teams that definitely won’t make it (Virginia at No. 20). Nonetheless, the poll is good barometer to look at as we enter a week of conference tournaments and teams’ last chances to extend their seasons.
Who’s Hot?
Cornell (+4): While UNC is the consensus No. 1 among the coaches, the Big Red and Rob Pannell seem to be getting red hot at just the right time and are now ranked second. Pannell put together a nine-point effort in Cornell’s 17-11 win Saturday against Princeton and the Big Red host the Ivy League tournament, as the league’s top seed, beginning Friday.
Syracuse (+4): The Orange finally won or lost a game by more than one goal, beating Notre Dame handily, 10-4, on Saturday at the Big City Classic. Before that, Syracuse has played in all one-goal games, winning four and losing one, to Hobart.
Who’s Not?
Maryland (-5): The Terps, who looked dominant to start the season, bowed out in the ACC tournament semifinals to Virginia. It’s offense is sputtering, scoring 18 goals in the last three games.
Who’s New?
Virginia (19): It’s little consolation for your season ending, but Virginia finishes its year, at least, in the Top 20.
Villanova (20): The Wildcats are the top seed for this weekend’s Big East tournament, which they host. They need at least one win the tournament to be NCAA tournament eligible.

NCAA Lacrosse: #3 North Carolina Men’s Lacrosse Outscores #6 Duke 18-17 In ACC Semifinal On April 26; Will Face Virginia In Final On April 28

North Carolina Men's Lacrosse vs Duke

Marcus Holman scored the game-winning goal with 1:28 to play and Kieran Burke saved David Lawson’s shot with six seconds remaining as third-ranked North Carolina defeated sixth-ranked Duke 18-17 Friday night in the ACC Tournament semifinals at Kenan Stadium.
A crowd of 4,567 fans witnessed the highest-scoring game in ACC Tournament history as the teams combined for 35 goals, exceeding the previous record of 33 goals set in a double overtime semifinal game in the 2000 tournament when Virginia beat the Tar Heels 17-16.
Second-seeded Carolina (11-3), which last won the ACC Tournament title in 1996, will play fourth-seeded Virginia (7-7), in the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Kenan Stadium. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU. UNC advances to the ACC Tournament championship game for the third time in Coach Joe Breschi’s five years after the Tar Heels failed to win an ACC Tournament game for 12 successive years from 1997-2008.
Holman’s late heroics overcame a monumental comeback effort by the Blue Devils (11-5) who had won nine straight games coming into Friday’s contest. UNC led Duke by as many nine goals early in the third quarter before the Blue Devils scored 11 of the next 12 goals to take the lead with less than seven minutes to play. North Carolina (11-3) scored the last two goals of the game to pull out the victory and win its eighth successive game.
Carolina achieved its nine-goal margin at 15-6 with 11:31 left in the third quarter before Duke ran off eight straight goals and 11 of the next 12 tallies to take its first lead of the game with 6:12 to play. But Jimmy Bitter tied the match with 5:01 to play and Holman, who was named Friday as a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, scored the game-winner off Chad Tutton’s assist with 1:28 to play.
Duke had an extra-man opportunity at the end of the game and a chance to tie but Kieran Burke made a save on a point-blank shot by David Lawson with six seconds remaining and the ball bounced out of bounds before either team could gain possession as the clock expired.
