Lacrosse ACL Knee Injuries: “Champion Magazine” Features “Obstacle Course: After Reconstructive Surgery, Student-Athletes Face A Grueling Path To Emotional And Physical Recovery”

Obstacle Course Article On Knee Reconstruction Surgery Champions Magazine

Every year, more than 2,000 NCAA student-athletes across 15 high-risk sports will feel that bomb detonate inside their knee, hear the menacing echo reverberate through their body, endure a few minutes of misery in their final moments on the playing surface and eight or more of the most trying months of their lives off it. Next season isn’t assured.

A YEARLONG BATTLE

“No matter how strong you are, you’re still at risk,” says Dr. Leland Winston, head physician for Rice athletics. “When the ACL tears, your muscles don’t have time to react quickly enough to protect it.”

Student-athletes crumple into a heap on a court or a field, clutching vainly at a knee. Slow-motion replays show the joint contorting, buckling, twisting. Questionable return, the announcers say. Torn ACL, the newspapers read. We’ll see him next season, fans think. Bring in the next player.

Then they turn the page.

ACL InjuriesBut what is an ACL? Why does it matter? Why does it so frequently interject itself into discussions of college athletics? After all, it’s merely one of four major ligaments that stabilize the knee. But it runs vertically through the middle of the joint, serving as its backbone, keeping the femur and tibia in place as players cut, jump and accelerate through practice and competition. Though student-athletes are faster and stronger than they’ve ever been, a study of NCAA injury data revealed that ACL tears rose by 1.3 percent annually over a recent 16-year period.

But advances in surgical and rehab techniques have shifted the odds dramatically in their favor. Orthopedic surgeons note that roughly 90 percent of athletes recover from ACL tears, most of whom reach pre-injury levels of athleticism. The snap of a ligament and gasps of concerned fans are no longer the requiem for an athletics career.

After they’re stitched – sometimes stapled – together, student-athletes will spend many waking hours in forgotten training rooms where torment and tedium collide. As the graft and the screws settle into tunnels burrowed inside bone, they’ll rehabilitate shriveled muscles, performing endless repetitions of exercises that evoke a startling, unfamiliar brand of pain. They’ll watch the teammates they’ve sweated and bled with go to battle without them. They’ll miss classes in the mostly bedridden week that follows surgery. They’ll tackle homework with minds smothered by pain medication.

And when they’re cleared to play again? Most endure a yearlong battle with themselves, learning once again to trust the joint that’s caused so much strife.

“This is harder than anything you’ll do on the court,” says Oklahoma State basketball athletic trainer Jason Miller. “This is the hardest thing to get through. It’s painful. It hurts. It’s time consuming.”

And student-athletes will navigate the other parts of their lives, the parts not devoted to or defined by basketball or soccer or football, on crutches. Tasks once taken for granted – sleeping comfortably, getting off a toilet, opening a door, maneuvering into a car or comically small college desk, getting a meal in a cafeteria, or carrying a textbook-laden backpack across campus – become monumental obstacles. And stairs sap time and energy, evoking dread and sweat. They’re to be avoided. Except, in college, they seem to be unavoidable; Olukemi lives on the third floor.

“Stairs were the hardest part after surgery,” Olukemi says, more than three weeks into rehab. “They still are.”

NCAA Lacrosse: Cornell Men’s Lacrosse Attacker Rob Pannell Named “2013 USILA Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award” As Oustanding Lacrosse Player

Cornell Men's Lacrosse Attacker Rob Pannell USILA Player of the Year

For the second time in his career, Cornell senior Rob Pannell has been named the USILA’s Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the Outstanding Men’s Lacrosse Player in Division I. He becomes the fifth two-time winner of the award and will lead the Big Red into the NCAA semifinals this weekend in Philadelphia, Pa.
Pannell joins a who’s who of lacrosse greats to take home the trophy twice in a career – Larry Quinn, Johns Hopkins (1984, 1985); Gary Gait, Syracuse (1988, 1990); Casey Powell, Syracuse (1997, 1998); Matt Danowski, Duke (2007, 2008).
Pannell, a two-time Tewaaraton Trophy finalist, has been named a first-team All-American in each of his past three seasons after earning a third-team selection as a freshman in 2009. He joins Paul Schimoler ’89, Ryan McClay ’03 and Max Seibald ’09 as the only Big Red men’s lacrosse players to earn four All-American honors during his career. Earlier this season, he became the first-ever three-time Ivy League Player of the Year in men’s lacrosse and just the fourth player in the history of Division I college lacrosse to be named conference player of the year three times during their career. He enters championship weekend with the NCAA career scoring lead within reach. He needs six points to match Danowski’s record of 343 points and seven points to break the record.
In his final campaign on East Hill, Pannell has matched or exceeded his career season highs with 53 assists, 42 goals and 95 points, just 10 points off the school single-season record. He has registered at least one point in a school-record 71 straight contests and has registered at least three points in 25 consecutive games. Pannell has registered at least three assists in 12-of-17 contests this season, handing out a season-high six assists last weekend against Ohio State in the NCAA quarterfinals. Pannell was named Ivy League Player of the Week four times during the season. A three-year Cornell team captain, he has led his team to a 56-15 overall record (21-3 Ivy League), four Ivy League titles, three Final Four appearances and a spot in the 2009 national championship game.

NCAA Lacrosse: Denver Men’s Lacrosse Sr. Middie Cameron Flint Named First Team USILA All-American; Eric Law, Jeremy Noble And Wesley Berg Named Honorable Mention All-Americans

Denver Men's Lacrosse 2013 USILA All-Americans

University of Denver men’s lacrosse senior Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) was named First Team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) today. This is the first time that a Pioneer was tabbed a first team selection.

Joining Flint on the list is senior Eric Law (Denver, Colo.), junior Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) and sophomore Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) as honorable mention selections.

For the third consecutive season, four Pioneers have received All-American recognition by the USILA. The team was voted on prior to the NCAA Tournament.

“For the Denver Pioneers, 2013 has been an amazing year and it thankfully continues into the NCAA Championship weekend,” said head coach Bill Tierney. “Whenever a team experiences great success, some of its individual players will rightfully be honored. Cam Flint, Eric Law and Wesley Berg have consistently led us to new heights.  Being named DU’s first, First Team All-American is a special honor that Cam deserves as he has been a force for us this year and throughout his career. Eric and Wesley have been inspirational in their play and leadership all season. Jeremy’s impact is obvious despite being hurt most of the season. We are thrilled to have him back on the field again. Most importantly, each of these young men is of such high character and put their team far ahead of individual accolades, as we continue to play in the last weekend of May.”

A captain and four-year starter, Flint was named a 2013 ECAC First Team selection and currently is third on the team with 50 points (36 g, 14 a). He was named Honorable Mention in 2012 and 2011. For his career, Flint is second among active DU student-athletes with 136 career points off 102 goals and 34 assists.

A captain and three-year starter, Law leads the Pioneers with 75 points off 40 goals and 35 assists. He leads all DU active players with 146 career points of 83 goals and 66 assists. He was also named to the All-ECAC Second Team this season.

Berg leads the Pioneers in goals this season with 56 and is second on the team in points (72). In his two-year career, Berg has amassed 109 points (third most among active DU players) off 82 goals and 27 assists. He was named to the All-ECAC First Team.

Ohio State Men's Lacrosse 2013 USILA All-Americans

Ohio State senior attackman Logan Schuss has been named a Second Team All-American and senior midfielder Dominique Alexander, sophomore midfielder Jesse King and junior defenseman Joe Meurer have been named Honorable Mention All-Americans by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), the organization announced Thursday.

Schuss is the first Buckeye named to a USILA first, second or third team twice and the first Ohio State player selected for the second team since Kevin Buchanan in 2008. Schuss is also the first Buckeye to earn USILA All-America accolades three times; he was an honorable mention selection as a freshman in 2010 (the first true freshman in Ohio State history named an All-American) and a third team pick in 2012 as a junior. Ten Buckeyes have earned USILA honors twice.

In Ohio State history, six Buckeyes including Schuss have been named to the USILA’s first, second or third teams. He joins Joe Bonanni (third team, 2012), Buchanan (second team, 2008), Greg Bice (second team, 2004), Skip Van Bourgondien (second team, 1971) and Glenn Rudy (third team, 1966).

Alexander, King and Meurer give Ohio State 39 USILA Honorable Mention All-America accolades all-time. The Buckeyes have had at least one All-America selection each year since 2008, totaling 13 in that span (two second team, two third team, nine honorable mention) and have 20 total honorees since 2000. This is the first time since 2008 and just the second time in program history four Ohio State players have been recognized by the USILA as All-Americans. The 1957 team ranks first with six honorable mention selections.

titles. All of Tierney’s championships came while he was the head coach at Princeton.

In 18 head-to-head matchups, Desko owns a 13-5 advantage against Tierney, including a 4-1 record in NCAA postseason meetings. The last time the two legends matched wits was in the 2011 season opener. Desko’s Orange defeated Tierney’s Pioneers in that one, 13-7.

This is just the fourth meeting between the Orange and Pioneers. The Orange prevailed in the first matchup, 13-10, at the 2002 Pioneer Face-Off Classic in Denver, and beat the Pioneers, 15-9 and 13-7, respectively, in the 2010 and 2011 season openers for both teams.

NCAA Lacrosse: Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse Middie Jim Marlatt, Defenseman Matt Miller Named 2013 USILA Third Team All-Americans; Matt Kavanagh, John Kemp Named Honorable Mention

Notre Dame Men's Lacrosse 2013 USILA All-Americans

For the ninth consecutive season the University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse program has produced multiple United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honorees. Jim Marlatt (Jr./M) and Matt Miller (Sr./D) were named to the 2013 USILA All-America Third Team, while Matt Kavanagh (Fr./A) and John Kemp (Sr./G) were honorable mention selections.

Marlatt (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) was Notre Dame’s leading midfield scorer as he tallied 20 goals and 12 assists in addition to picking up 43 ground balls. He notched five multiple-goal games, including a career-high five-goal effort in the 13-5 season-opening victory at Duke. Marlatt had two goals and one assist in the 13-12 overtime win at Denver.

This is the second All-America citation for Marlatt, who received honorable mention accolades last season. He is a two-time first team all-BIG EAST honoree.

Miller (Warrenton, Va./Notre Dame Academy) was an anchor on a Fighting Irish defensive unit that was among the nation’s best all season long. Notre Dame finished the year with an 8.31 goals-against average, which currently ranks 10th nationally. Miller picked up 28 ground balls and was named first team all-BIG EAST. The Fighting Irish captain was an honorable mention All-American last season.

Miller recently was named a USILA Scholar All-American and also is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. He was selected to play in Friday’s USILA/LAXWORLD North/South Game. The Rochester Rattlers selected Miller in the sixth round (44th overall) of January’s Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft.

Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade/Hotchkiss) registered a stellar rookie season with the Irish as he led the team in goals (32) and assists (16). The 32 goals are the most ever for a Notre Dame freshman. Kavanagh combined to post seven goals and three assists in Notre Dame’s two NCAA Championship contests. He had four goals in the first-round win over Detroit (9-7) and then tallied a game-high six points on three goals and three assists in the quarterfinal setback to Duke (12-11).
