NCAA Lacrosse: #12 Denver Women’s Lacrosse Is Favorite To Win MPSF Conference Title With #15 Stanford, Cal Berkeley And San Diego State All Close Behind; USC Has Impressive First Season

MPSF Women's Lacrosse banner“Oregon, who won the conference last year and was preseason No. 2 in the MPSF, is now sitting at 0-3, with conference losses to San Diego State, USC and Cal. At this point, it looks as if Denver is the favorite to take the MPSF conference title, but I am not sure that is a given. Stanford, Cal and San Diego State are all close. This is a tough one to call, as there are still some key in-conference matchups to be played. The good news for this up-and-coming conference is that they have a coveted automatic qualifier spot in the NCAA tournament.”   LaxMagazine.com

# 20 DENVER (5-0 MPSF, 13-1 Overall) got past No. 10 Stanford, 14-10, and held off UC Davis, 13-11, both at home this past weekend to extend the win streak to 11. Entering this week, she owns 53 in 2013, a new single-season conference record. Kara Secora combined for 13 points on six goals and seven assists, putting away the game-winner in each contest.

USC (3-2 MPSF, 6-8 Overall) Caroline Cordrey recorded four goals, while Caroline de Lyra added three goals and three assists (one each to break a 10-10 tie in the final 10:39), in the 12-10 win at Oregon. The Trojans host California Friday (Apr. 12).

CALIFORNIA (4-0 MPSF, 7-4 Overall) Megan Takacs put away four goals and Grace Parente picked up six ground balls in Sunday’s 14-10 win at Oregon, as the Bears remain undefeated in MPSF play. Takacs now sits in second all-time at Cal in career goals (129), 16 shy of the record. Cal heads to USC and San Diego State this week.

# 10 STANFORD (2-1 MPSF, 7-3 Overall) Hannah Farr delivered four goals and had an assist in last Tuesday’s 21-8 win over Fresno State. Julia Burns also had a five-point game on a hat trick and two assists.

FRESNO STATE (0-4 MPSF, 2-9 Overall) Paula Badali recorded a game-high five goals against San Diego State, tied for second in Bulldog history, and was seven-for-seven on shots over two games. The Bulldogs host Oregon and UC Davis this week.

OREGON (0-3 MPSF, 5-7 Overall) Hayley Milner posted a game-high five goals against USC, before Carly O’Connell combined for a career-high seven points vs. Cal, on four goals and three assists. The Ducks visit Fresno State and host St. Mary’s this week.

The magical season for the University of Oregon lacrosse team keeps on getting better as they claimed the program's first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament title over Stanford, 13-10, on Sunday at Cagan Field in Stanford, Calif. With the victory, the Ducks will host a NCAA Tournament play-in match against the winner from the Patriot League, Navy, on Saturday (May 5) at 1 p.m. Stanford was the winner of seven straight MPSF Tournament titles before running into the Ducks on Sunday. NCAA Lacrosse: Stanford Women’s Lacrosse Ranked #1 In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Preseason Poll

Stanford picked up 48 points and six first place votes to earn the top spot in the 2012 MPSF Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Cardinal has won the last seven MPSF Championships, appearing in three NCAA Tournaments in that span (2006, 2010, 2011).

Returning in the midfield is 2011 MPSF Newcomer of the Year Anna Kim and conference tournament Most Valuable Player Lyndsey Munoz in goal. Emilie (27G/12A) and Anna Boeri (17G/19A) are also back.

Only four points out of first in the poll is Oregon, collecting the remaining two top votes. The Ducks reached the MPSF Championship game last year, as Kristina Barrett (24A/52P), and Jana (36G) and Jess Drummond (34G/15CT/31DC) return from all-conference seasons. On the heels of a second place regular season, Denver came in third, posting 35 points. Two-time all-conference Ashley Harman and Kara Secora highlight the returnees, as the former was third in the MPSF last year in save percentage (.422) and the latter leading in assists (2.06 A/G) and third in points per game (4.33). California scored 33 points to finish in the top half of the poll. Tara Arolla (36G/39DC), Megan Takacs (32G/16A/48P), and Tori Harrison (33 GB/12CT/8DC) return from the All-MPSF squads. UC Davis took fifth with 24 points, having won 10 games in 2011. All-MPSF Defender Vanessa Jamison, along with Hannah Mirza (UCD record 58 DC) and Elizabeth Datino (30G/16A) are back for the Aggies.
