The University of Michigan men’s lacrosse team got on the board first for the second straight contest, as freshman Mike Hernandez (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) netted the first score 1:15 in, but No. 4 Johns Hopkins went on an 8-0 run, holding the Wolverines scoreless for 15:24 to seal a 17-8 victory Saturday (March 23) at historic Homewood Field. U-M was outscored, 11-3, in the first half but held the deficit to 6-5 in the second stanza.
Hernandez got Michigan on the board with his first collegiate goal, ripping a crank-shot from 15 yards out on a helper from senior Thomas Paras (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) to give U-M the early 1-0 advantage.
No. 4 Johns Hopkins (3-0) responded with an 8-0 run, keyed by a trio of scores from Blue Jay attackman Brandon Benn, as Hopkins had scores from five different players.
U-M ended the run with an individual effort from freshman Dan Kinek (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus/Avon Old Farms), who went coast to coast on a full-field clear, beating his man from five yards out in the final third offside high to cut the score to 8-2 1:39 into the second quarter. Kinek’s first score of his U-M career ended a 15:24 goalless draught the Maize and Blue.
Freshman/sophomore David Joseph (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) gave U-M its third score of the opening half with 9:09 left in the second quarter with his first career goal, ripping a shot from 10 yards out left side and beating Hopkins goalie Pierce Bassett offside hip to bring the score to 9-3 in favor of JHU, which led 11-3 at half.

The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team scored four goals in a span of less than three minutes midway through the third quarter to break open a close game and the Blue Jays went on to a 15-6 victory against Siena in the season-opener for both teams at Homewood Field Friday evening. The win is sixth straight in a season-opener for Johns Hopkins, which also improved to 5-0 all-time against the Saints.

Hopkins led 6-4 and neither team had scored for more 11 minutes when junior midfielder Rex Sanders ignited an 8-1 Blue Jay run with the first of his career-high two goals with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter. Less than three minutes later the Blue Jays had added the second of Wells Stanwicks’ two goals and the second and third goals of the night for junior Brandon Benn to push the lead to 10-4 with just under four minutes remaining in the period.

The Johns Hopkins starting attack unit of Chris Boland, Zach Palmer and Brandon Benn combined for 11 goals and seven assists and junior Mike Poppleton won 20-of-26 faceoffs to lead the Blue Jays to a 19-9 victory against visiting Stony Brook in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Tournament at Homewood Field Sunday afternoon. The win propels the Blue Jays into the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 39th time in 41 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Hopkins will take on the winner of the Maryland-Lehigh game, which will be played later tonight at Lehigh.
