Denver Men's Lacrosse vs Fairfield ECAC Tournament

Led be a five-point effort from senior Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario), the No. 4/3 nationally-ranked and top-seeded University of Denver men’s lacrosse team defeated the No. 4 seeded Fairfield University Stags 10-8 in the first semifinal of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday evening at Boswell Field in Geneva, N.Y. The win advances the Pioneers to the Championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. Denver will face either Loyola or Ohio State.
“I am so proud of this team because they did not give up at any point in this game today,” said DU head coach Bill Tierney. “Even when Fairfield came back to tie it twice late in the game, these guys really rallied around each other and you could tell that they had the will to win. I also thought our goalie play was really good tonight with Ryan and Jamie in the net.”
Also scoring for the Pioneers was sophomore Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) who finished with his 10th career hat trick. Flint’s three goals, was good for his 13th career hat trick. Senior Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) finished the day winning 50 percent of his face-offs (10-of-20) and scoring his third goal of the season, while sophomore Eric Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) netted his 22nd of the season.
Senior Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) finished with two points, scoring his 31st goal and tallying his 30th assist. Senior Taylor Young (Littleton, Colo.) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers with his third goal of the season.
Sophomore goalie Ryan LaPlante (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished the first half with six saves, while allowing four goals, and junior goalie Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) recorded eight saves while allowing four goals.
Fairfield’s Eric Warden and Jordan Greenfield scored three goals each, while goalie Jack Murphy made 11 saves on the night.
Denver opened the scoring 1:40 into the contest as Young scored off a pass from Law and Berg made it 2-0 with 6:27 left to play. Fairfield tied the game with two goals within 61 seconds of each other and both teams ended the quarter deadlocked at two goals apiece.
Carraro opened the scoring in the second quarter as he scored a “thirty-second timer-on” goal with 6:55 remaining. Flint made it 4-2 a minute and a half later as he scored his first of the game. The Stags answered less than a minute later to make it a one-goal deficit, but the Pioneers stretched it back to two as Berg scored his second of the game with 3:49 to play. Fairfield scored in the final 1:53 of the quarter to make it a 5-4 Denver lead at the half.
Both teams were unable to find the back of the net until Flint scored his second of the game with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter to put DU up 6-4. Fairfield answered with 2:27 remaining and then tied it at 6-6 almost 3:30 into the fourth quarter.

Ohio State Men's Lacrosse vs Fairfield

The No. 13-ranked Ohio State men’s lacrosse team broke open a game tied after the third quarter to defeat No. 20 Fairfield, 14-8, Saturday on Senior Day in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State trailed 7-6 late in the third quarter but used an eight-goal run to take command of the final regular-season game.
The Buckeyes move to 10-3 on the year, the most regular-season wins for the squad since the 2004 team had 12 and the fifth time in program history a team had double-digit wins during the regular season. The squad, on a four-game winning streak, finishes ECAC play 5-2 and will be the No. 3 seed in the ECAC tournament, taking on No. 2 seed Loyola in the semifinals Thursday in Geneva, N.Y. No. 1 seed Denver will face No. 4 Fairfield in the other semifinal, with the championship game set for Saturday.
The nine members of the senior class – Dominique Alexander, Mark Crawford, Nick Liddil, Kevin Mack, Patrick Riffee, Logan Schuss, Patrick Toohey, Dan Wertz and Trey Wilkes – were honored in a pregame ceremony. Alexander, Schuss, Liddil and Wertz all scored in the win and all nine saw game action, with Wilkes winning 11 faceoffs. Schuss and Alexander both had two goals and an assist for three points, while sophomore Turner Evans led the Buckeyes with three goals and an assist for four points. Freshman Carter Brown and sophomore David Planning each scored twice and sophomore Jesse King had two points on a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Greg Dutton had a career-high 15 saves for the second game in a row.
“Logan and Dominique have been staples for us for the last four years,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “It’s great to see all nine seniors finish here with a win. They made a real impact on this program and changed who we are. We are excited for the win and focused on what lies ahead (the ECAC tournament).”
Myers said the team came together offensively and defensively as it rallied for the win.
“We started making stops defensively,” Myers said. “On the defensive end we felt like we were giving them second chance opportunities and not making those one-stops we talked about. Greg was seeing the ball better in the second half and offensively we found a rhythm. I thought we played really unselfishly in the fourth quarter and found that extra man; we didn’t settle for the first shot.”

NCAA Lacrosse: Video Highlights Of #6 Loyola Men’s Lacrosse 13-7 Win Over Fairfield On April 6

Loyola University Maryland defensive midfielders Scott Ratliff and Josh Hawkins combined to score six goals on as many shots, and Pat Laconi added an assist, as the Greyhounds’ defensive midfield was in on almost half of their goals during a 13-7 victory Saturday afternoon over visiting Fairfield University in ECAC Lacrosse League action at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Ratliff, a long-stick midfielder, scored four, and Hawkins added two for Loyola (9-2 overall, 5-0 ECAC), which clinched a bid to the 2013 ECAC Championships that will be played May 2-4 at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. Ratliff also had four caused turnovers and three ground balls, and Hawkins tallied a pair off the ground and caused one Stags turnover.

Fairfield (6-5, 3-2) took an early 1-0 lead as Marshall Johnson scored on a seven-yard shot from the top at 10:32 in the first quarter, but less than two minutes later, an extra-man goal by Loyola would start a 5-0 Greyhounds run.

A Stags push gave Loyola a man advanatage, and Harry Kutner fed Kevin Ryan who hit an over-the-shoulder shot from just in front of the crease to tie the game at 1-1 with 8:44 on the first-quarter clock.

Ratliff then picked up the ground ball on the next faceoff, and he struck with a 12-yard shot from the top of the box to give Loyola its first lead, 2-1, just nine second after Ryan’s goal.

Chris Layne scored the Greyhounds’ third goal, taking a flip from Davis Butts and running left-to-right past his defender to score at 6:27. Justin Ward then scored his first of two-straight at 3:11 with a sidearm shot from just outside the crease.
