“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #4 Denver Men’s Lacrosse Comes Back From Six-Down To Beat #5 North Carolina 12-11 To Advance To Final Four; First Team In NCAA Quarterfinal History To Win After Trailing By Five Goals Or More

Denver Men's Lacrosse vs North Carolina 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals

Junior goalie Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) made 11 saves and allowed just five goals in 50:23 to jump-start the fourth-seeded University of Denver men’s lacrosse team’s largest come-from- behind victory under head coach Bill Tierney, a 12-11 win over fifth-seeded North Carolina in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium. Denver is the first team in Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal history to win after trailing by five goals or more.
With the win, the Pioneers advance to their second Final Four in three seasons, and will face top-seeded Syracuse next Saturday.
Senior Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) won 17-of-26 face-offs in the game, including six of the last seven to aid the Pioneers to a 6-1 run to close out the contest. Carraro also picked up a game-high six ground balls.
“North Carolina: what a train that was, trying to stop that coming downhill at us early,” Tierney said. “Mostly, I’m proud of these young men and teammates for persevering. You don’t get too many opportunities in life to fight through such adversity and come back ahead. I’m just proud for everybody at the University of Denver and everybody in our organization.”
On the scoresheet, senior attacker Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) led Denver with six points on his eighth hat trick of the season, to go along with three assists. Sophomore attacker Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, British Columbia) added four goals and an assist, good for his team-leading ninth hat trick of the year. Senior Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) distributed three assists, and classmate Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.) turned in his fourth multi-goal game of the season with two off the bench for the Pioneers. Freshman Gordie Koerber (Baltimore, Md.), junior Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) and sophomore Eric Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) added a goal apiece to round out the scoring for Denver.

NCAA Lacrosse: Denver Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Bill Tierney “Changed His Way Of Thinking” To Match Pioneers’ Offensive Tradition And Strengths; “Obsessed With Scoring 13 Goals To Win Now Rather Than Not Giving Up 7 Goals”

Denver Men's Lacrosse Logo“I was always so obsessed with not giving up more than seven goals to win, and now I’m obsessed with scoring 13 to win.”

“…I’ve said for 1,000 years, it’s much easier for a coach to change than it is for a group of players to change. If we’ve done anything ‘right,’ I think it’s that we’ve changed our way of thinking. We still only want to give up seven, but we we’re certainly willing and happy to win a game 13-11, as opposed to 7-5. It’s just who we are now….”

Last fall, former Lacrosse Magazine writer Matt Forman interviewed Bill Tierney about his shift in philosophy from Fred Smith protégé/quick slide architect/defensive genius at Princeton to suddenly becoming the ringmaster of the greatest offensive circus on Earth at Denver.

“There was a very clear moment in time where that shifted: one of my first meetings with [assistant coach] Matt Brown here at Denver. When I came here four years ago, he was 28 years old, he had more maturity than I do. I sat down with him, and we were talking about him staying on my staff, and I said, ‘Matt, you know I’m a defensive guy, it’s hard to be an offensive coach. You might want to call [former Princeton, current Loyola offensive] coach Dave Metzbower. It’s hard to be an offensive coordinator when the head guy is such a stickler for ‘perfect’ defense. My goal has always been to keep opponents at seven goals or under.’

“And he said, ‘Coach, with these guys, you’ll never be able to play and win like that.’ I said, ‘Well, tell me what we can do then.’ And he said, ‘We can score a lot of goals. A lot of goals.’ Not begrudgingly, more out of due respect for Matt and our players, I didn’t want to change their mindset. It’s a positive, go-to-the-goal mindset.

Wow. If that quote doesn’t deserve its own standalone plaque somewhere in the coaching Hall of Fame, I don’t know what does.

Here’s a first-ballot Hall of Fame skipper, known for inventing a grinding, possession-oriented brand of half-field lacrosse, who quickly embraces another way to play. It takes a lot of confidence for a coach to admit that his schemes — schemes that, in Tierney’s case, won him national championships at Princeton — may not work at a place like Denver.

DU has a 52-player roster, but coach Bill Tierney and his staff have only  12.6   scholarships to give, split up however they see fit. Ellis, who substitutes  whenever the Pioneers lose possession of the ball and is responsible for  defending and causing turnovers, is on a full ride. He’s a big part of a team  that is making its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals  this weekend.

NCAA Lacrosse: #13 Denver Women’s Lacrosse (18-3) Trail 12-1 At Halftime, Fall To #4 Florida (18-2) 16-5 On May 12 In 2013 NCAA Tournament

Denver Women's Lacrosse vs Florida 2013 NCAA Championships

University of Denver sophomore Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) had a goal and an assist, breaking DU’s single-season scoring record with 113 points this season, but the No. 13 Pioneers fell 16-5 to No. 4 Florida in the Second Round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament at Donald R. Dizney Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
“I think we calmed down a little bit. This is a big stage for us, our second [NCAA Tournament] game for the program,” head coach Liza Kelly said. “Florida has been a little more seasoned in that, having been to the Final Four. I think Florida was hands down the best team we have played all season. Walking into a big stage against a good opponent, I wish it hadn’t taken 30 minutes to calm down a little bit. We just needed to recognize it’s just lacrosse and we can play the game.”
Senior Mikayla Clark (Eden Prairie, Minn.), juniors Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) and Annabelle Gilbride (Alexandria, Va.), and freshman Rachael McKinnon (Brooklin, Ontario) all scored goals for the Pioneers (18-3), while redshirt senior Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) added a pair of assists.
Senior Kate Henrich (Lansdale, Pa.) had five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Henrich’s 70 caused turnovers this season are tied for the third most in NCAA single-season history, and she graduates with 170 career caused turnovers, the seventh most in NCAA history.
Redshirt sophomore Hannah Hook (Arnold, Md.) made 11 saves in the contest, giving her 190 this season, the third most in team history.
The Gators (18-2) were on fire from the beginning, scoring three goals in the first 3:05 of the game. Gilbride put Denver on the board off an assist from Secora at the 26:25 mark, but Florida scored nine-straight goals to close out the first half with a 12-1 lead.
