National League Lacrosse: Colorado Mammoth Announces 23-Player Roster That Includes Only Eight Returning Players

The Colorado Mammoth announced today that the team has named its final 23-player roster, headlined by all-star forward John Grant Jr. Since the start of training camp, the coaching staff has been responsible for trimming the active roster by more than a dozen.

“It took three weekends of [training] camp, and hours of film study, to determine which group of players we believe gives us the best chance to win the Champion’s Cup,” said Mammoth Head Coach Bob Hamley. “Now, I’m anxious for Opening Night!”

Colorado opens the 2012 regular season at home on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center against the Minnesota Swarm on Saturday, January 14 at 7pm MST. The Mammoth roster includes four former Swarm players, including three who played for Minnesota a season ago.

Three left-handed forwards made the Mammoth team: Grant Jr., Adam Jones and Jamie Lincoln. Gavin Prout (the franchise’s all-time leading scorer), Sean Pollock, Derek Hopcroft and Jordan McBride make up the right-handed offense.

Returning transition players Ilija Gajic (L) and Jed Prossner (L) are joined by newcomers Cameron Holding (L), Mat MacLeod (R), and Scott Stewart (R). John Gallant (L), Jarett Park (R), and Matt Leveque (R) are the lone holdovers from last year’s defense. Joining them are lefties John Orsen, Creighton Reid, and Rory Smith, and righties Jon Sullivan and Dan Coates.

National League Lacrosse: Video Highlights Of The Washington Stealth 20-7 Victory Over Colorado Mammoth On Feb 18

The Washington Stealth picked up their first home win of the 2011 season with a 20-7 drubbing of the Colorado Mammoth on February 18. Here’s a video recap of the game.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (4-5) Defeat Colorado Mammoth (1-6) 20-7 In Offensive Explosion

The Washington Stealth (4-5) picked up their first home win of the season tonight in a 20-7 rout of the Colorado Mammoth (1-6) at the Comcast Arena at Everett.  The Stealth scored the first goal of the night just over five minutes into the game, opening the flood gates for the highest-scoring effort for the team since the first round of the 2009 playoffs.

From start to finish, it was a complete team effort tonight for the Stealth; 17 players recorded a point and ten scored a goal.  Goaltender Tyler Richards earned game MVP honors with 38 saves as the defense allowed just seven goals, a season-low.  The Stealth completed a season sweep of the Mammoth, winning all three regular season meetings of 2011.

“Tonight, we played like the team I expected to see all season long,” said Stealth Head Coach Chris Hall after the game.  “I think the big difference was in the transition game.  We pushed the ball up the floor, opening up the offense and our defense applied a ton of pressure on [Colorado] as they looked to run.”

The Stealth transition game accounted for six goals from defensive players, including three goals from Jeff Moleski, his first career hat trick.  The Stealth out shot the Mammoth 64-45.

National League Lacrosse: Colorado Mammoth (1-5) Lose To Boston Blazers (5-3) 11-6 As Team Goes Scoreless On Power Plays

The Boston Blazers (5-3) won 11-6 in a rough match against the Colorado Mammoth (1-5) at home on Saturday at TD Garden. Both the offense and defense were critical throughout the game.

“Not the type of game that usually makes a coach feel warm and fuzzy, but to win that one on the short-man was really strong,” said Blazers Head Coach Matt Sawyer. “I think they were 0-for-6 on the power play and we outscored them three to nothing (on power play goals). One of those 0-for-6 would be the five minute major. So we will take the win, we’re happy with that.”

Cliff Smith, of the Mammoth, and Jack Reid, of the Blazers, let the fists fly in the first quarter. Smith got five minutes, while Reid got five plus a two minute penalty for cross-checking. But while the Blazers were down, Ryan Dilks defined the evening with the first goal, assisted by Mike Kirk. There was no stopping the Blazers after this.

National League Lacrosse: Colorado Mammoth (1-4) Faces Off Against Boston Blazers (4-3) On Saturday In Must-Win Game On Road

The Colorado Mammoth (1-4) seek to recover from last week’s late meltdown as they travel east to play the Boston Blazers (4-3) at TD Garden on Saturday night. It will be only the second time ever the teams have faced each other; their previous tilt resulted in a Boston 9-7 victory in Denver last season.

Colorado is coming off a 10-8 loss at the hands of the Stealth for the second time this season. The Mammoth led in the final minutes before Washington’s offense pocketed three swift goals to stun the team and send them to their eleventh consecutive loss at home. For the team, it is frustrating in the sense that the talent is on roster to get the job done, yet finding the perfect balance still eludes them.

Head coach Bob Hamley says however the team has faith in their roster, and that equilibrium is in sight.”We’re right there, if we finish a little better. We’re making mistakes at crucial times, and that has to stop.”

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (3-3) Defeat Colorado Mammoth (1-4) 10-8 After 3-Goal Spurt Late In Fourth Quarter

“…Washington (3-3), down 8-7 with 3:12 left, sent the crowd of 14,091 home disappointed after exploding for three goals in a minute….”

The Washington Stealth, behind three Luke Wiles goals — including two in the fourth period — handed Colorado its third straight National Lacrosse League loss, 10-8 at the Pepsi Center. And this one stung more than the others.

“We’re not playing 60 minutes. I could sit here and say we did this and did that. We’re not playing hard enough for 60 minutes, and we made stupid mistakes,” said Mammoth forward Brian Langtry, who scored two goals and assisted on three others.

Colorado, despite having three goals disallowed, took an 8-6 lead less than three minutes into the fourth period behind goals from Langtry and Grant, who scored three times. But Washington (3-3), down 8-7 with 3:12 left, sent the crowd of 14,091 home disappointed after exploding for three goals in a minute.

The loss sent the Mammoth (1-4) to its seventh straight loss in the series and fourth in a row at home to the Stealth.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (2-3) Face The Colorado Mammoth (1-3) Tonight As Both Teams Try To Increase Offensive Production

The Washington Stealth are the same offensive unit that led the NLL in goals scored and shooting percentage during its championship run in 2010, but have been surprisingly inconsistent in four of the five games.

  • Washington (2-3) is averaging just 10 goals per game. Add in the Calgary win and the Stealth bump up to 11.8 goals per game, still noticeably lower than last year’s 13.2 average.
  • Still, Washington is second in the league with a .184 shooting percentage (behind Minnesota’s league-leading .199 average).
  • The problem is the Stealth haven’t been getting the production at critical times.
  • Forward Rhys Duch scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Week 1 at Colorado, but the Stealth failed to convert late against Calgary in a Week 2 loss, and last week squandered a power-play to start overtime in a loss to Minnesota.
  •

The Colorado Mammoth are a team with similar offensive issues plus a 10-game home losing streak dating back to April 17, 2009.

  • The ever-dangerous John Grant Jr. leads Colorado (1-3) with nine goals and 15 assists (24 points)
  • But Colorado hasn’t received much in the way of assistance as second-leading scorer Brian Langtry has just six goals and nine assists.
  • The Mammoth, who have seen all four of their contests decided by one goal, average 9.75 goals per game through four games
