NCAA Lacrosse: #8 Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse Middie Henry Schoonmaker (Lincoln HS, OR) Tallies Six Points (4 Goals, 2 Assists) In Leading Orange To A 13-12 Win Over #7 Princeton On April 6; Follows Colgate’s Peter Baum (2012 Tewaaraton Award) As Latest Lincoln High Star Making Impact At D1 Level

Syracuse Men's Lacrosse Henry Schoonmaker vs Princeton

Late in the fourth quarter of the best game of his young career, Henry Schoonmaker (Lincoln HS, OR) needed a break.
After the redshirt freshman poked the ball free on a faceoff to get the Syracuse men’s lacrosse team possession, he scored the tying goal and scooped up the ground ball on the ensuing faceoff to give the Orange a chance to take the lead.
John Desko took a timeout to set up his offense.
Schoonmaker — exhausted by that point — walked slowly over to the sideline, happy his career night would briefly be put on hold.
“I was a little happy when the timeout came,” he said. “I haven’t felt like that since high school running that much. It was definitely nice to get that timeout.”
Senior JoJo Marasco ultimately scored the game winning goal on that possession, but Schoonmaker was the key in No. 8 Syracuse’s 13-12 come-from-behind win over No. 7 Princeton on Saturday at Princeton Stadium. The midfielder tallied a career-high six points on four goals and two assists to spark the Orange offense but also came up huge as a wing on faceoffs. He made big plays to start and finish the game for SU (7-2).
“He definitely came out with a bang today,” junior Matt Harris said. “He’s a stud athlete. He can run. He can pass. He can shoot. I think it was kind of his coming out party today.”
Schoonmaker got involved with early with two quick goals in the first quarter but showed up again in the fourth to help SU rally for the win.
Princeton took a 12-10 lead with 6:57 left, but Syracuse quickly mounted a comeback. Billy Ward scored from the top of the crease on a feed from Marasco, and Schoonmaker took over from there.
Tigers faceoff specialist Justin Murphy won the ensuing faceoff forward, but Schoonmaker flew in from the wing to poke the ball away. After Harris eventually gobbled up the ground ball, Schoonmaker ripped a shot into the top corner to even the score at 12-12.
On the next faceoff, the sophomore ripped the ball out of a scrum at the X and picked it up himself this time to give SU possession.

NCAA Lacrosse: Michigan Men’s Lacrosse Falls To Colgate 10-7 At Metropolitan Lacrosse Classic

Michigan Men's Lacrosse vs Colgate

The University of Michigan men’s lacrosse team fell, 10-7, to the Colgate Raiders Sunday (March 17) in the Metropolitan Lacrosse Classic at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. Michigan was tied with the Raiders at the 8:36 mark of the second quarter at 3-3 but was unable to retake the lead. Sophomore Will Meter (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) had a career-best four points with two goals and two assists to lead the Wolverine scoring charge
The Wolverines took the early lead on an unassisted goal from sophomore/freshman David Joseph (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) at the 11:58 mark. After a Colgate goal, Meter scored his first goal of the day at the 8:01 mark on a crease feed from freshman Mike Hernandez (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the Wolverines. The lead lasted for a little more than six minutes, but Colgate scored back-to-back goals to take a 3-2 lead.
Following a tally from freshman Peter Kraus (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) on a helper from Meter at the 8:36 mark, the Raiders closed the half on a 3-0 run to carry a 6-3 lead into the break. After ‘Gate added another score to stretch the lead to 7-3, a Hernandez crankshot goal broke the run at the 12:45 mark of the third.
After the Wolverines and Raiders traded goals to close out the third, a goal from 2012 Teewaraton winner Peter Baum marked his third goal of the day at the 14:17 mark of the final quarter to stretch the score to 9-5. After an outstanding individual effort from freshman Kyle Jackson (Sarnia, Ontario/The Hill School) on an alley dodge score at the 10:58 mark, Colgate notched its final score of the contest with 7:42 left on a score from Jimmy Ryan.
Colgate then iced the game by putting the clamps down on defense, holding U-M scoreless for 10-plus minutes in the final quarter. Jackson ended the scoreless streak with a goal off a dodge from the left wing with his second goal of the contest with only 26 seconds left.

NCAA Lacrosse: Colgate Men’s Lacrosse Attacker Peter Baum (Portland, OR) Wins 2012 Tewaaraton Award; First Winner From West Of The Mississippi

Colgate Men’s Lacrosse Attacker Peter Baum — born and raised in Portland — became the first winner from west of the Mississippi River and the first in Colgate history. His victory capped a suspenseful lead-up to Thursday’s announcement, as there was no clear-cut favorite entering the evening. The Selection Committee traditionally placed significant emphasis on postseason performance — before Baum, each of the last 10 winners played on Memorial Day — but 2012 had a different feel. But Baum was certainly deserving of the award. Three other finalists said Thursday they would select Baum if they had a vote. Baum led the nation in goals (67) and points (97), the latter of which was the most for a finalist since Duke’s Matt Danowski in 2007, setting seven school and Patriot League records in the process. “I certainly didn’t foresee a 97-point season,” Baum said before the ceremony. “I never like to put goal and point total estimates or expectations out there before the season. I never like to predict how I’m going to do. But I definitely felt good coming into the year.” Baum seemed genuinely shocked when his name was announced, dropping his head into his hands for a few seconds before standing and walking to the stage. Later, Baum said: “I’m speechless. This is unbelievable. Everybody has a great shot at the award. With five finalists, you feel like you’ve put a good resume together, but you have no idea how it’s going to go. To be standing here in front of all these people, the Godfathers of the sport if you will, means so much. I’m so proud.”

Oregon High School Lacrosse Recruiting: Lincoln Boys Lacrosse Middie Peter Baum Has Scored 21 Goals For Colgate As A Freshman

A popular idiom in today’s society is that every cloud has a silver lining. That statement couldn’t ring any more true for Colgate’s men’s lacrosse team.

As a senior at Lincoln High School, Peter Baum scored 84 goals, tallied 38 assists, and won 52 ground balls. He finished his high school career with 180 goals and 70 assists. In both 2008 and 2009, Baum was a First Team All-State selection and was voted as Oregon's best offensive player.

Colgate may be struggling through a 2-8 season, but there is hope beyond the horizon for the Raiders in midfielder Peter Baum.

Baum is a 6’1″, 185-lb. freshman from Portland, OR. Oregon may not be thought of as a hotbed for lacrosse players, but his high school credentials provide a glimpse of the player Baum has the possibility of developing into.

As a senior at Lincoln High School, Baum scored 84 goals, tallied 38 assists, and won 52 ground balls. He finished his high school career with 180 goals and 70 assists. In both 2008 and 2009, Baum was a First Team All-State selection and was voted as Oregon’s best offensive player.

Baum led Lincoln to a state championship in 2008 and a second-place finish the following year. He displayed his intelligence in the classroom by being on the Honor Roll every quarter in high school and obtaining a 3.9 un-weighted GPA.

Inside Lacrosse ranked Baum No. 37 on its list of incoming freshman recruits for 2009. On the surface, a university in New York may seem to be an unlikely destination for Baum, but his father Richard played lacrosse at Colgate.

Baum’s biggest asset is his tremendous speed. He can scoop up a ground ball without being touched and can immediately attack the opposition’s net. Baum still needs to improve his shot selection and finishing skills, but he has begun to take more low shots to increase his offensive efficiency.

Heading into tonight’s home game against Lafayette, Baum has scored 21 goals and dished out one assist. With at least three matches remaining in the season, he already holds the Colgate record for most goals by a freshman. In last Saturday’s defeat over Lehigh 12-4, Baum achieved his fifth hat trick of the season.

Although Baum represents the future for the Raiders, his impact on the present is not yet over. Wins over the Lafayette Leopards and the Bucknell Bison could push Colgate into a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. With Colgate losing its eight games by a total of 16 goals and four by just one, the Raiders represent a threat to any team they face.

In interviews, Baum has stated that what he misses most about not living in Oregon is eating Mexican food. If he continues to score goals for Colgate, and the Raiders win more frequently, a restaurateur may open a Mexican establishment in Hamilton and call it Baum Bueno.
