Youth Lacrosse: “Sum It Up For Girls” In New Jersey Was Founded In 2007 To Teach Lacrosse To Young Girls Through Positive Coaching (Video)

Laura Gump co-founded Sum It Up For Girls in 2007 to share her passion for lacrosse with young girls. She wanted to start a lacrosse program that focused explicitly on teaching the lessons from team sports that extend beyond the playing field, whether it’s the confidence that comes with developing your skill in a sport, the strength that comes from feeling comfortable with yourself and your body, or the bonds that are formed by being part of a team. Sum It Up for Girls endeavors to pack all of this good stuff into the span of a clinic series or camp week. Laura believes that most of these lessons flow naturally from the amazing power of positive coaching.

Laura has coached girls from kindergarten through high school for over 10 years for programs such as: the Park School in Maryland; the Summit Girls Lacrosse Club; Girls on the Run; T3 Lacrosse and Kent Place School. Laura grew up in Summit and still lives in town with her husband, Bill, two sons and a daughter. In addition to field hockey, she played for the first girls’ lacrosse team at Summit High School in 1981, later going on to play both sports at the University of Rochester; and then focused on lacrosse where she played for the West London Lacrosse Club, when she lived abroad with her husband and children from 1993 to 1998. Laura currently coaches middle school lacrosse at Kent Place School in Summit, NJ.

Growth Of Lacrosse: US Lacrosse To Bring “Fast Break Initiative” Featuring Lacrosse Clinics And Training Resources To Phoenix And San Diego In 2010

Each year US Lacrosse, the national governing body of the sport, chooses a city or region to bring its Fast Break Initiative to. The Fast Break Initiative, a program started in 2005, infuses a city with lacrosse resources, training and events to help build a solid foundation for the sport to flourish in the area. It is one of US Lacrosse’s most popular and influential programs. This year, US Lacrosse has named three cities that it will infiltrate with a host of US Lacrosse programs and services – Kansas City, San Diego and Phoenix.

“We’re excited to be able to bring our Fast Break Initiative to three cities this year,” said Joshua Christian, managing director of sport development. “This is one of our most impactful programs that US Lacrosse offers. We’ve been able to introduce lacrosse to thousands of players, parents, coaches, officials and administrators since the program’s inception. We’ve got some great events planned for 2010 and have been working closely with the wonderful chapter volunteers in the three regions.”

In Kansas City, US Lacrosse wrapped up its Coaching Education Program Level 1 clinic in February where over 60 local coaches attended the clinic and had the opportunity to earn Level 1 coaching certification. US Lacrosse will be back with the Great Plains chapter for a Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) Double Goal Coach workshop in August and a men’s and women’s officials’ clinic later in the fall.

US Lacrosse will join forces with the San Diego chapter in June to offer a Coaching Education Program Level 1 clinic, in conjunction with PacificXPOSURE, a youth lacrosse tournament. Then, US Lacrosse will be back in San Diego for an inner-city youth lacrosse clinic in the fall.

Finally, the Arizona chapter and US Lacrosse will partner up in Phoenix for a girls’ lacrosse youth clinic in conjunction with the US Lacrosse Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates (WDIA) National Championships, May 3-8. Later this fall, US Lacrosse will bring a Coaching Education Program clinic and an officials’ clinic to the region. Plus, the U.S. men’s national team will offer a player clinic in November.

Past Fast Break Initiative cities include: New Orleans (2005), Las Vegas (2006-07), Birmingham, Ala. (2008), Roanoke, Va. (2009) and Chicago (2009).

Interested cities and towns can apply to get the Fast Break Initiative in their region by contacting their local chapter (http://www.uslacrosse.org/TopNav/Chapters/USLacrosseChapters.aspx) or emailing Sarah Newman, manager of programs and grants at US Lacrosse (snewman@uslacrosse.org).
