Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team: Competing In The 2010 Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational Represented “Closure” To The “Visa Issue” That Prevented Play In 2010 World Lacrosse Championships

Members of the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team have said “cheerio” to the disappointment of a British visa snafu that prevented them from competing in the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships last July, and “Aloha!” to the Hawaii Lacrosse 20th Anniversary Invitational Tournament.

The 20-plus member team arrived in Hawaii Oct. 27 to compete in the anniversary tournament at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki from Oct. 29 – 31. This is the first year the tournament is sponsored by Nike Lacrosse.

The island tournament attracts 2,000 players and spectators each year to play and watch the sport known as the “fastest game on two feet.”

To the Iroquois Nationals and the people of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee (or Iroquois) Confederacy, however, lacrosse is known as the “the Creator’s game” and it was founded on Iroquois territory. The six nations are the Onondaga, Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Tuscarora and Cayuga and while each nation is a separate entity, they share a collective identity as Haudenosaunee.

“When you talk about lacrosse, you talk about the lifeblood of the Six Nations. The game is ingrained into our culture, our system and our lives,” said Oren Lyons, Onondaga faithkeeper, a former All-American Lacrosse goalie, and honorary chairman of the Iroquois Nationals.

The Hawaii Lacrosse 20th Anniversary Invitational Tournament is the Iroquois Nationals’ first competition since a grueling week of uncertainty in July when the team’s departure for the world championships in Manchester, England, was an on-again-off-again affair as the U.S. and British governments hassled over the validity of the team’s Haudenosaunee passports.

World Champion Team USA Men’s Lacrosse: The “Redeem Team” Wins One For The “Old Guys”

Team USA Lacrosse Goalie Brian Dougherty: “Wearing this flag on my back, you know, it’s for my country. It’s something that they had that we needed to get back,” said Dougherty, referring to Canada’s win over the U.S in the gold medal game four years ago. “Put all that together with it being my last game, there’s a lot of stuff going on here.” It’s hard to imagine lacrosse without Dougherty, the portly, loud-mouthed, bald 36-year old who will go down as one of the best goalkeepers the sport has ever seen. Doc made 15 saves Saturday to lead the U.S. national team to a 12-10 victory over Canada in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship final at the University of Manchester.

Team USA Men’s Lacrosse Profile: Ned Crotty Completes Biggest Year Ever In Men’s Lacrosse Winning World Lacrosse Championship, NCAA Lacrosse Championship, Tewaaraton Trophy And #1 Selection In MLL Draft

Team USA Middie Ned Crotty had a big year in 2010 that included being named Lacrosse Magazine’s Preseason Player of the Year, winning the NCAA championship at Duke, winning the Tewaaraton Trophy and being the No. 1 selection in the MLL draft. Now he has the 2010 World Lacrosse Championship gold to add to his collection. Photo courtesy of Duke Lacrosse.

“…a big year for Crotty that also included being named Lacrosse Magazine’s Preseason Player of the Year, winning the NCAA championship at Duke, winning the Tewaaraton Trophy and being the No. 1 selection in the MLL draft. Now he has some gold to add to his hardware…”

Four years ago, Crotty was a freshman at Duke University when Pressler, the coach who recruited him, was forced to resign amid rape accusations against three teammates that cost the Blue Devils their 2006 season. Those players were exonerated, but the damage was done.

That same year, in a much less publicized disappointment, Canada dethroned the U.S. in the world lacrosse championships. A 28-year reign ended.

Now, Crotty can say he had a hand in bringing closure to both events.

Crotty, the 2010 Tewaaraton Trophy winner who led Duke to its first NCAA championship in the spring, reunited with Pressler with Team USA and led the U.S. to a 12-10 victory over Canada in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship final Saturday before 4,651 fans at the University of Manchester.

2010 World Lacrosse Championships: Team USA Defeated Japan 20-5 And Will Face Canada In FIL World Championships Final

THE United States took no mercy on Japan as they powered into this year’s FIL World Championships final.

The eight-time winners stormed to a 20-5 victory having started in fine fashion by winning the opening quarter 8-1. Star player Paul Rabil led from the front with four goals, while Kyle Dixon and Drew Westervelt both scored hat-tricks as the US had the game won at half-time as they led 6-0.

CANADA had few problems as they breezed past Australia and into this year’s showcase final against the United States.

The defending champions eased to a 15-6 victory in Manchester and will now play their arch-rivals the US in a repeat of the 2006 final in Ontario. Many will have expected that match up, but Australia were understandably out to spring a surprise. But although the men from Down Under led 3-2 early in the contest, Canada raised their game to make it six wins out of six in this year’s tournament.
