A Brief Look at the 3-0 Men’s Squad
The Buckeye men, under fourth-year head coach Nick Myers, are 3-0 to start the year. After opening with two wins in three days, topping Detroit at home 11-6 and winning at Mercer, 15-8, the squad upset then-No. 5 ranked Denver, 10-9, last Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla., to open ECAC Lacrosse League play. The squad, which began the year receiving votes in the national polls, is now ranked 10th in the USILA coaches poll and 12th in the Inside Lacrosse media poll.

Junior Logan Schuss, who was recently named to the Tewaaraton Watch List for national players of the year, leads the Buckeyes with 10 goals and 15 points. He was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Week and the IL Nike Player of the Week after a five-goal game in the win over Denver. Sophomore Tyler Frederick is tied with Schuss for the team assist lead with five helpers each. Senior Brock Sorensenis second on the team with seven goals this year.

A Glance at the 4-0 Women’s Program
Led by second-year head coach Alexis Venechanos, the Ohio State women are 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2002. The Buckeyes opened up the 2012 campaign by defeating San Diego State, 19-4, and No. 6-ranked Stanford, 14-10, before returning to Columbus for wins over Robert Morris, 16-2, and Louisville, 21-7, last weekend. They were ranked No. 18 in the IWLCA Preseason Poll and have since moved up to No. 14 in the deBeer Media Poll (the IWLCA will not begin regular-season polls until Feb. 27).

A candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy and the current American Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Alayna Markwordt recently broke the OSU records for career goals and points  just a few games into her senior season and now leads the team in 2012 with 11 goals and 12 assists. Gabby Capuzzi (13g, 5a) and Jackie Cifarelli (8g, 10a) are tied for second with 18. As a team, the Buckeyes are out-scoring opponents 70-23 and allowing an average of fewer than 16 shots per game.

Kemp, a junior goalie, was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while Pfeifer, a senior midfielder, was selected to the league’s weekly honor roll.

Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) matched a career-high save total with 14 in the win over Duke. His first goal gave the Irish a 5-2 advantage in the third quarter and his second tally upped the lead to five (7-2) in the fourth quarter.

The victory over Duke propelled Notre Dame to No. 2 in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll. The Fighting Irish return to action on Sunday with a home showdown against Penn State. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (ET).
