Virginia, a loser to Hopkins a week earlier, checks in at No. 1, but barely. The Cavaliers the Blue Jays each recieved four first-place votes. UMass' earned two, but was just slightly ahead of Hopkins in the overall points count to slide into the No. 2 spot. The top 3 are separated by just five points.

MCLA Lacrosse: Colorado State Men’s Lacrosse Dominates UC Santa Barbara In 11-3 Win On March 29

In their first contest of the year against a higher ranked team, the #3 Colorado State Rams were focused and efficient in all phases of the game, turning a 5-0 halftime lead against the 2nd ranked UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos into a comfortable 11-3 victory on Thursday evening on campus.

CSU got five points from junior attackman Austin Fisher (Rock Canyon HS / Highlands Ranch, CO) and a career high 11 saves from sophomore Jack Regan (Sunset HS / Beaverton, OR) in the win.

After a nip and tuck first quarter that ended with the Rams up 1-0, CSU exploded in the second frame for four goals, including three within just over two minutes to stake out to a 5-0 lead after the first half.  Junior midfielder Dustin Grybinas (Kirkwood HS / Kirkwood, MO) led the charge for Colorado State, scoring consecutive goals in just over a minute’s time as the Rams began to click on all cylinders.

Even with the five-goal lead, the Rams were far from comfortable at the break, having surrendered a 5-1 halftime lead against Cal Poly just six days ago.  UCSB struck first in the third quarter to narrow the gap, but the Rams scored four of the game’s next five goals to put it out of reach heading into the final fifteen minutes.

The key third-quarter run was punctuated when sophomore attackman Sean Smith (Amherst HS / Amherst, NY) rifled one past UCSB goalie Andrew Noto and then senior midfielder Greyson Konkel (Regis Jesuit HS / Aurora, CO) buried a goal on man-up to give the Rams a 9-2 lead with just under :20 in the period.  UCSB’s Jamie Bridgman scored with :01 left on the clock in the quarter, but that was the last goal the CSU defense would surrender on the evening and the Rams salted away the fourth for a big victory in their final out of conference game of the season.

CSU’s Fisher led the game in scoring with his three goals and two assists while Konkel and Grybinas notched two goals apiece.  Smith ended the night with three points, adding two assists to his third-quarter tally and UCSB was led by Bridgman, who scored twice.  Again, the CSU defense, led by junior Hayden Porter’s (Heritage HS / Littleton, CO) five groundballs, was stifling and when UCSB did break through for shots, Regan was there to snuff them out.

Shooting totals were fairly even on the night with CSU holding a 33-29 advantage, but the Rams made hay on groundballs and riding – scooping up 34 gbs to UCSB’s 25 and turning the Gauchos over on six clearing attempts.  UCSB was held scoreless on their five man-up chances while CSU scored on one of their three opportunities.

WCLA Lacrosse: University Of Colorado Women’s Lacrosse Sponsors “Mile High Invitational” Featuring Seven Of Top 20 Teams In Country

The stakes are as high as the altitude in Boulder this weekend for many of the top US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) teams. Seven of the top 20 teams in the latest WCLA Division I poll will participate in the first-ever Mile High Invitational, hosted by Colorado. Games start Friday.

“We thought the best way to attract good quality teams was to make it apparent up front that we wanted to make a really competitive tournament and bring a talented group of teams together that would really challenge each other,” Colorado head coach Dan Finck said. “The big thing early on was getting these teams to commit. That took a lot of work. From there the biggest task is scheduling everybody so everybody gets the games they want.”

No. 10 Colorado joins No. 3 BYU, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Colorado State, No. 7 Santa Clara, No. 12 Texas, No. 13 UC Davis Club and Arizona in action this weekend. (See full schedule below.) The results of the tournament could mean a seismic shift in the rankings next week and will be significant for teams heading into conference tournaments and the WCLA National Championships — which will be May 9-12 in nearby Colorado Springs.

MCLA Lacrosse: Latest Polls Rank Cal Poly Men’s Lacrosse #1 Followed By UC Santa Barbara, Colorado State, BYU And Chapman

The Mustangs went to Fort Collins and handed formerly top-ranked Colorado State an overtime loss, which was good enough for Cal Poly to leapfrog UC Santa Barbara (which beat the 'Stangs earlier) and snag the top spot in the polls this week. The Gauchos are at No. 2, but they have the Rams breathing down their necks (just one point back).

MCLA Lacrosse: #4 Cal Poly Men’s Lacrosse Defeats #1 Colorado State 9-8 In Overtime On March 23 In “Entertaining And Physical Game”

The campus of Colorado State University was abuzz on Friday night as #4 Cal Poly came calling to take on the #1 CSU Rams. In one of the more entertaining and physical games in several years, the two teams traded runs and battled to the end before Cal Poly finally came out on top with a game-winning goal by midfielder Peter Chiang with just :15 seconds left in the first overtime period to take a hard fought 9-8 victory over the home squad.

The defeat spoiled CSU’s 9-0 start to the season and a huge on-campus crowd, not to mention marking the Rams’ first home loss since April 11, 2010.

After CSU raced out to a 5-1 halftime lead, Cal Poly scratched their way back in the game in the third quarter, scoring four straight goals to set up an epic fourth quarter and overtime session.  The Rams scored two goals in under 10 seconds to jump back out to a 7-5 lead with 10:22 remaining, but another key run by Poly put the Mustangs in front 8-7 with 4:36 remaining.  CSU’s Greyson Konkel (Regis Jesuit HS / Aurora, CO) tied the game with only :36 left to send the game to overtime to set up Chiang’s theatrics.

Colorado State won the opening face-off of the overtime period and had a terrific chance on the ensuing break, but Cal Poly’s Bo Dunnaho-Kirsch was up to the task and turned the shot aside.  CSU was unable to capitalize on the ensuing opportunity but held serve on the defensive end to regain possession.  After a frantic couple of minutes, CSU eventually turned the ball over on a clear and Chiang took advantage by beating his man down the right alley and ending the game with a snappy shot on the run.

Ultimately, the Rams were undone by 19 turnovers, including three in the overtime period alone and three in Cal Poly’s key third quarter comeback.  While the Rams won all statistical categories, including face-offs, shots and groundballs, they were unable to capitalize down the stretch and Poly gained momentum as the second half wore on.  The Mustangs relied on a relentless offensive attack and spread scoring, not to mention a very solid second-half defensive performance to secure the victory.

NCAA Lacrosse: Johns Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse Defeated Virginia 11-10 On March 24 To Claim #1 Ranking

Few games that receive as much hype as Saturday's men's lacrosse matchup between top-ranked Virginia and second-ranked Johns Hopkins actually live up to the advance billing. After regulation and all but five seconds of a full overtime, it's safe to say that the Blue Jays' 11-10 win over the Cavaliers did - and then some. Johns Hopkins trailed by as many as three in the first half, led by two early in the fourth quarter and trailed by a goal with just over a minute to play in regulation - while playing a man down. That's when things really got crazy. Virginia turned the ball over with 11 seconds remaining on its extra-man chance and the Blue Jays needed one timeout and 27 seconds before junior Lee Coppersmithslipped inside a pair of defenders and scored from the high slot with 44 seconds left in regulation.

NCAA Lacrosse: #1 Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse Stays Unbeaten With 13-6 Win Over Vanderbilt On March 23 (Video)

No. 1 Northwestern saw a five-goal advantage shrink to just one early in the second half of its American Lacrosse Conference opener against No. 11 Vanderbilt, but the Wildcats scored the next five goals to pull away and defeat the ‘Dores, 13-6, Friday at Lakeside Field. Junior Erin Fitzgerald contributed a pair of free-position goals to that 5-0 run and finished with a team-best four scores on the day, while Brianne LoMantonotched a season-high 10 saves between the pipes for NU.

Senior Shannon Smith scored three goals to surpass the 300-point plateau for her career and junior Taylor Thorntonalso netted a hat trick, helping the Wildcats win for the 11th straight time against the Commodores.

With periods of pouring rain disrupting the flow of the game early on, Smith was able to put the hosts on top just over five minutes in when she worked off the crease for an unassisted goal, giving her exactly 300 points for her career and sole possession of third on the school’s all-time scoring list.

Five minutes later, Fitzgerald struck off a pass from behind the net by Casey Bocklet, a goal that was answered shortly thereafter by Vanderbilt’s Kendall Pittinger. With the rain making it difficult to even hold onto the ball, both teams were kept scoreless until Smith created for herself once again with 12:37 to go before half.
