National League Lacrosse: Colorado Mammoth Drop First Game Of Season 21-10 To Calgary

On the eve of the 2012 National Lacrosse League All-Star Game, the Colorado Mammoth was humbled by the Calgary Roughnecks. Colorado suffered its worst home loss in team history, falling 21-10 to Calgary on Friday night at Pepsi Center.

The Mammoth’s previous worst loss at home was by nine goals on Jan. 10, 2009 versus Portland, a 14-5 game.

Colorado remains in the lead in the West Division, with a one-game cushion over Calgary (5-2).

“They wanted it a little more than we wanted it today,” said Colorado captain Gavin Prout. “There are no excuses. You can’t score one goal in a half – and on transition – and win a game. That is not the way this league works and we had to be better offensively.”

The Mammoth had been the only undefeated team in the NLL coming into the match-up with the Roughnecks, and is now 6-1 overall on the season.

Five Colorado players will be represented at the All-Star game on Saturday at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y.: forwards John Grant Jr., Gavin Prout and Adam Jones, defenseman Rory Smith and goaltender Chris Levis. Grant will captain the West Division All-Star squad.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth Lose To Minnesota Swarm 15-7 To Fall To 1-6 Record

The Minnesota Swarm scored seven unanswered goals in the second quarter tonight, ultimately spoiling Washington Stealth Head Coach Chris Hall’s return to the bench with a 15-7 win at the Comcast Arena at Everett.

The Stealth falls to 1-6 on the season, while Minnesota improves to 4-3.

The first fifteen minutes of the game were highly contested, as the teams played to a 3-3 tie. Ryan Benesch scored twice for the Swarm in the quarter, while the Stealth got goals from Lewis Ratcliff, Dean Hill and Cam Sedgwick. The one glaring difference between the sides in the opening frame was the number of shots taken during the quarter. The Stealth tallied 16 shots on goal, while the Swarm had just six.

The Stealth was without starting goaltender Tyler Richards, who was injured last week against Rochester. Rookie Chris Seidel and the newly-added Matt King split time in goal, allowing 15 goals on 39 shots in the game.

Injuries In Lacrosse: NLL’s Washington Stealth Partners With Seattle Children’s Hospital To Present “Concussions: What You Need To Know”

The Washington Stealth professional indoor lacrosse team has partnered with Seattle Children’s Hospital, Everett Bone and Joint, and the Washington Chapter of US Lacrosse to present “Concussions: What You Need to Know”, a free symposium on one of sport’s hottest topics.

The symposium for parents, athletes and coaches will take place on February 21, from 5:45pm-8:30pm at Seattle Children’s Wright Auditorium.

Concussions are an increasingly growing issue in the world of contact sports, including lacrosse. With more information coming out on concussions daily, it is important that parents, athletes and coaches are aware of the cause, symptoms and treatment of concussions. Some of the top doctors in the area from Seattle Children’s Hospital and Everett Bone and Joint will deliver presentations with practical discussion focused on young athletes playing sports.

“For a few families, this evening may prove to be one of the most important nights of their lives,” said David Takata, President of the Stealth. “Seattle Children’s has stepped up in a big way to make their top physicians available to the sports community. In addition, the Stealth’s team doctors from Everett Bone & Joint will discuss the practical matter of returning athletes to the field or court. It’s a unique opportunity for any sport coach, board member or team volunteer to be educated by the experts.”

The symposium will provide answers to frequently asked questions about concussions, including “What is a concussion?”, “How is a concussion treated?” and “How do I get back to playing safely?”. Plus, those in attendance will have an opportunity to ask doctors questions on concussions and hear a personal story of concussions from a lacrosse player. The evening’s program will be free to all and appetizers will be served during registration.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth Lose 12-11 To Calgary Roughnecks Feb 10

It was a chaotic evening at the Comcast Arena at Everett tonight, as the Washington Stealth (1-4) and Calgary Roughnecks (3-2) accumulated 141 penalty minutes in the first quarter alone, but followed that up with a back-and-forth battle between a pair of talented lacrosse teams.

A goal with two minutes left in regulation proved to be the difference as the Roughnecks left Everett with a 12-11 victory.

There were fireworks from the opening face-off in this one as two heavyweights, the Stealth’s Jeff Moleski and Calgary’s Geoff Snider dropped the gloves to set the tone for the evening. From that erupted four more fights in the quarter. But following the first quarter outbursts, the two teams combined for just 21 minutes of penalties the rest of the game.

The Roughnecks scored the first two goals of the game, with the Stealth answering with goals from Rhys Duch and Brett Bucktooth. The first quarter ended with the score knotted at two.

The teams traded goal-scoring blows for the remaining 45 minutes of action, ending the second quarter tied at six and the third quarter tied at eight. Stealth goaltender Tyler Richards was stellar in goal all night, making 39 of his career-high 59 saves in the first half.

“Tyler was amazing for us tonight,” said Stealth assistant coach Art Webster. “We should have won this game based on his play. He proved that he’s one of the top goaltenders in the world tonight.”
