“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #7 Duke Men’s Lacrosse Rallies To Beat #2 Notre Dame 12-11 In Quarterfinals To Advance To Final Four

Duke Men's Lacrosse vs Notre Dame 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships

Senior captain David Lawson tallied a career-high five goals to lead Duke to a thrilling 12-11 comeback victory over No. 2 seed Notre Dame in front of 7,749 fans at the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinal at Lucas Oil Stadium. The win launches Duke to its seventh straight championship weekend appearance and ninth overall in program history.
Duke (14-5) scored the game’s final three goals to rally from an 11-9 deficit in the fourth quarter and capture its second straight one-goal NCAA Tournament victory. The Blue Devils avenged the regular season loss to Notre Dame (11-5) in the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2010.
“I thought they [Notre Dame] were brilliant today,” said head coach John Danowski. “Their faceoff guy was terrific. Their goalie was tremendous. They shot the ball extremely well. It was one of those games playing against a dear friend Kevin Corrigan that you hate to see someone lose. With that being said, I am extremely proud of our guys from beginning to end. We wanted to play for 60 minutes. We certainly don’t script these endings, last week or this week. We just wanted to play the game. Kyle Turri, while he didn’t have a great day in the goal statistically, comes up with a big save on the outlet. He keeps his poise and allows us to score the tying goal.”
The game was a back-and-forth affair for the entire 60 minutes, featuring nine ties and five lead changes with the largest lead being two goals by both squads. Junior attackman Jordan Wolf had four assists on the day, while classmate Josh Dionne had three tallies in the win.
Trailing 11-9 with 9:29 to play, the Blue Devils defense buckled down and held the Irish scoreless while the offense made the final charge. Duke made it a one-goal game, 11-10, on an unassisted score from junior Christian Walsh with 8:31 to play.
With 3:30 to play and neither team having scored for five minutes, Duke goaltender Kyle Turri came up with his biggest play of the afternoon as he stopped Sean Rogers’ shot on the crease and sent an outlet pass to Greg DeLuca. The senior midfielder raced down the field and found Wolf who quickly dished it to Dionne for the game-tying score with 3:18 to play.
“The defender tripped on the back of the goal,” said Turri. “He came around and I just matched his stick. I kept the stick high, saw it all the way and it was really nice to get the last one.”

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #4 Denver Men’s Lacrosse Comes Back From Six-Down To Beat #5 North Carolina 12-11 To Advance To Final Four; First Team In NCAA Quarterfinal History To Win After Trailing By Five Goals Or More

Denver Men's Lacrosse vs North Carolina 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals

Junior goalie Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) made 11 saves and allowed just five goals in 50:23 to jump-start the fourth-seeded University of Denver men’s lacrosse team’s largest come-from- behind victory under head coach Bill Tierney, a 12-11 win over fifth-seeded North Carolina in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium. Denver is the first team in Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal history to win after trailing by five goals or more.
With the win, the Pioneers advance to their second Final Four in three seasons, and will face top-seeded Syracuse next Saturday.
Senior Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) won 17-of-26 face-offs in the game, including six of the last seven to aid the Pioneers to a 6-1 run to close out the contest. Carraro also picked up a game-high six ground balls.
“North Carolina: what a train that was, trying to stop that coming downhill at us early,” Tierney said. “Mostly, I’m proud of these young men and teammates for persevering. You don’t get too many opportunities in life to fight through such adversity and come back ahead. I’m just proud for everybody at the University of Denver and everybody in our organization.”
On the scoresheet, senior attacker Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) led Denver with six points on his eighth hat trick of the season, to go along with three assists. Sophomore attacker Wesley Berg (Coquitlam, British Columbia) added four goals and an assist, good for his team-leading ninth hat trick of the year. Senior Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) distributed three assists, and classmate Colin Scott (Ridgefield, Conn.) turned in his fourth multi-goal game of the season with two off the bench for the Pioneers. Freshman Gordie Koerber (Baltimore, Md.), junior Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) and sophomore Eric Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) added a goal apiece to round out the scoring for Denver.

“2013 MCLA Lacrosse National Championships”: #1 Colorado State Men’s Lacrosse (21-0) Captures Second Consecutive National Championship With 7-2 Win Over #2 Colorado (18-3) On May 18

Colorado State used a stifling defense to win its second consecutive MCLA national championship Saturday night, beating arch-rival Colorado 7-2 in the Division I final at Sirrine Stadium.

The Rams completed a 21-0 season. The only three losses for Colorado (18-3) came against CSU. This one, though, came more than 1,500 miles from either school and after four rounds of MCLA competition.

“It’s crazy, but I’m not surprised at all, though,” said Alex Smith, Colorado State’s coach. “I knew they were the second-best team along with us. I’m really proud it could have come against them. We have such a good rivalry. For our fans and out teammates, it just means so much.

“They’re really well-coached,” Smith said. “I have a lot of respect for them. … They did a great job defending us.”

The Rams’ defense was better, though, keeping the Buffaloes off the scoreboard until the first minute of the fourth quarter. Defenders Hayden Porter, Patrick Sullivan and Tyler Zabor shared the game’s most valuable player honor.

Colorado used a different defensive strategy from the two regular-season meetings, going with a zone defense. Smith wasn’t totally surprised.

“They played zone all last year,” Smith said. “I had a feeling they would break the zone out at the tournament. We saw it in some other tournament games zoning us. They were really good at it, so it took us executing really well to get it done.”

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: #1 Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse Rallies From Two Goals Down To Beat Yale 7-6 And Advance To Final Four

Syracuse Men's Lacrosse vs Yale 2013 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships

Top seed Syracuse (15-3) scored three goals in the final 3 minutes and 4 seconds to rally for a 7-6 NCAA quarterfinal victory against Yale (12-5) at Maryland’s Byrd Stadium on Saturday, May 18. The Orange advances to its 27th NCAA Final Four next weekend at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Redshirt freshman Dylan Donahue capped the comeback, scoring the game-winning goal off a pass from senior midfielder JoJo Marasco with 13 seconds remaining to propel the Orange to the national semifinals.
“I think this is our ninth one-goal game this year. We lost three by one and this is our sixth win by one,” Orange head coach John Desko said. “Unfortunately, the guys are used to being in these kinds of situations and made some pretty good adjustments down the stretch to win the game. I thought our defense played great all game long. While we didn’t have it at one half, we picked it up on the other side of the field. I’m proud of the guys. Any win this time of year is a great win.”
Donahue and Marasco both had one goal and two assists in the victory. Marasco’s two assists couldn’t have come at better times for the Orange. He assisted on senior Luke Cometti’s tying goal with 2:20 left and passed to Donahue for the winner.
To pull off the victory, Syracuse had to crack a Yale defense that shut out the Orange for 43 minutes and 18 seconds during the course of the game, by far the team’s longest scoring drought of the year.
Early on it didn’t appear that goals would be at a premium. Syracuse stormed out to a 4-0 advantage and led 4-1 after the first 15 minutes. Junior Derek Maltz had two goals in the opening period and Marasco and Cometti each had one. But Maltz’s tally at the 1:22 mark proved to be SU’s last for nearly three quarters.

“2013 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships”: #2 Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse Pounds Penn State 15-7 On May 18 To Advance To Final Four

Northwestern Women's Lacrosse vs Penn State 2013 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships

By working its way to a 5-0 lead and holding its opponent without a shot for the first 17 minutes of the game, No. 2 Northwestern set the tone for what turned into a convincing 15-7 win over No. 7 Penn State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship in front of over 1,100 fans Saturday night in Evanston.
Northwestern, which led 13-3 at the half and by as many as 12 in the second half, earned a spot in the tournament’s national semifinals for a remarkable ninth consecutive season, setting the stage for a rematch with one of the teams responsible for NU’s two losses in 2013 — third-ranked North Carolina.
“I think down the stretch the girls have been really focused, and it takes a lot of focus to be able to put a team away,” head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller said after winning her 34th career NCAA Tournament game. “You have them on the ropes, you got to get that knockout punch and I think earlier in the year we lacked the focus to be able to get over the hump. Every single player since our loss to Florida has been really committed, and that’s the difference, that level of focus.”
BTN Recap
The ‘Cats improved to 19-0 all-time in NCAA Tournament home games under Amonte Hiller and extended their current winning streak in tournament play to 10 in a row dating back to 2011.
“I think people think it’s automatic that we’re going to go to the (semifinals), but it’s very hard to get there,” Amonte Hiller said. “With the expansion of the (NCAA Women’s Lacrosse) Tournament, there were so many great teams in the Tournament and to be one of those four teams left is an honor.”
Northwestern and Penn State were meeting for an unprecedented third time this season, but Saturday’s quarterfinal affair much more closely resembled the teams’ regular-season outcome than their American Lacrosse Conference Tournament tilt that required overtime to decide a winner. The Nittany Lions, who managed only three goals and 10 shots against the Wildcats back on April 5, were limited to three first-half goals and 16 total shots for the evening on Saturday.

“2013 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships”: Cornell Men’s Lacrosse Dominates #3 Ohio State 16-6 On May 18 To Advance To Final Four

Cornell Men's Lacrosse 16-6 Win over Ohio State 2013 NCAA Lacrosse Championships

The Cornell men’s lacrosse dominated in every facet of the game and advanced to the program’s fourth NCAA Final Four in the last eight years with a 16-6 victory over No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at Maryland’s Byrd Stadium. The Big Red improved to 14-3, while OSU’s season ends at 13-4.
Senior attackmen Steve Mock scored a career-high seven goals, matching a Cornell record for individual goals in an NCAA tournament game, and classmate Rob Pannell one-upped him with eight points (two goals, six assists) to lead an offense that scored 16 goals in the first three quarters in exceeding its efficient production in its first round win over Maryland in the same stadium the week before.
Connor Buczek had three goals and two assists, senior goalkeeper AJ Fiore made 10 saves and junior faceoff man Doug Tesoriero won 16-of-24 to seemingly give the Cornell offense every possession. The Big Red held decisive advantages in shots (37-20), ground balls (39-28), saves (10-8), faceoffs (16-10) and caused turnovers (12-8). It went 1-of-1 on the extra man and held an Ohio State team that entered the day leading the country in 50 percent efficiency on man-up to an 0-for-4 day.
The defense had another huge day in front of Fiore, with Jason Noble (three caused turnovers) and Thomas Keith (three caused turnovers, six ground balls) leading the way. Keith in particular seemed to be all over the field from start to finish. Fiore was outstanding himself, adding five ground ball wins and two caused turnovers to his 10-save effort.
The game was the polar opposite of the last meeting between the two teams in the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes scored first when their goalie went the length of the field and scored and were off and running en route to a 15-7 victory during the first round in 2008. This time, scoring came early and often for attackmen – the ones wearing red.
Midway through the fourth quarter Ohio State took its 16th shot of the game, matching the Big Red’s 16 goals. It was that type of game for the Big Red, who executed every part of the gameplan flawlessly.
Cornell will meet the winner of tomorrow’s game between No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 7 Duke on Saturday, May 25 at either noon or 3 p.m. at Philadelphia’s Franklin Financial Field.

“2013 MCLA Lacrosse National Championships”: #2 Westminster Men’s Lacrosse (CO) Faces #1 St. Thomas (MN) In Div II Finals On May 18

Westminster Men's Lacrosse vs St. Thomas MCLA Div II Championships

On Saturday, the Westminster College men’s lacrosse team will face St. Thomas (Minn.) in the MCLA Division II Championship Game from Sirrine Stadium. The action will begin at 3 p.m. (MT) and will be streamed live on the MCLA web site with links available at WestminsterGriffins.com.
Westminster enters the title game at 17-5 on the season and winners of six straight games. They advanced to the final with a 9-8 triple overtime win over St. John’s (Minn.) in the semi-finals. The Griffins also claimed wins over Briarcliffe (N.Y.) and Indiana Tech at the tournament.
St. Thomas is 16-0 this season and they have won 24 straight games dating back to last season. The Tommies are the defending MCLA DII champions and have won three of the four titles since the Griffins won in 2008. St. Thomas defeated Liberty (Va.) in Thursday’s semi-finals, 10-9, while also defeating DePaul (Ill.) and U.S. Coast Guard (Conn.).
These two teams have faced each other six times in the past with St. Thomas winning all six meetings. They played on February 16 of this season at the Full House Faceoff in Henderson, Nev. The Tommies won that contest 11-10 as they held off a late Griffins rally for the win. The last time they played at the MCLA Tournament was a 9-7 win for St. Thomas in the quarterfinals of the 2011 tournament in Denver.
It took a third overtime for the Westminster College men’s lacrosse team to defeat St. John’s (Minn.) 9-8 in the semi-finals of the MCLA National Championships on Thursday afternoon at Sirrine Stadium.
“I just told them to get to the (cage) and keep shooting,” assistant coach Brad Lavoie said. “It wasn’t pretty but we will take it any way we can get it.”
Brian Tyrrell sent the second-seeded Griffins (16-5) to the second championship game in school history as he scooped a loose ball into the net with 1:43 left in the third overtime session. The ball became free after an initial shot from Kyle Postler was turned away by St. John’s (13-3) goalie Michael King. Tyrrell was moving away from the goal when he chipped a shot in the cage and sent the Griffins into a celebration.
