MCLA Lacrosse: Concordia Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Will McMinn Has Built Successful Program In 4 Years Based On Lofty Goals And Diverse Roster

The Eagles have a surprisingly geographically diverse roster. While the bulk of the players who have chosen to attend this school with a 1,400 student population, are from in-state, they have players from Delaware, New York, Utah and Arizona, as well. Concordia’s best player, sophomore Dustin Seguin, is from Calgary – one of the three Canadian players on the squad.

Will McMinn has been building high school programs all over the Los Angeles area. A member of the first St. Ignatius prep team in San Francisco before playing his college ball at UC Santa Barbara, McMinn moved to SoCal and was surprised by the lack of youth and high school opportunities. So he started a youth league in Orange County and built, by his count, a dozen prep teams.

Four years ago, he figured he’d give college ball a shot. He heard there was a struggling group of players at Concordia University, a small college located in Irvine, so he decided to apply for the job. Like many of his previous ventures, the Eagles are now on the cusp realizing its potential. No. 9 Concordia convincingly beat both No. 11 St. Mary’s and No. 23 Western Oregon to improve to 7-0 and is on track to qualify for the national tournament for the first time.

“We really have some lofty goals,” McMinn said. “We call them ‘B-hags.’ Big, hairy, audacious goals. The boys bought into it. It’s a great group of young men and we have very strong leadership from our seniors and our captains. In addition, we have very good players. It’s working out well this year.”

Since the program started in ’09, it has steadily improved. Last year, the Eagles even beat conference heavyweight Cal State-Fullerton in the regular season, only to fall to the Titans in the SLC tournament and barely miss out on a trip to nationals. McMinn believes he’s doing it my recruiting players who may not necessarily be the most coveted, but the ones who are the most well-rounded.

MCLA Lacrosse: Texas Men’s Lacrosse Builds Top Program That Seeks To “Eradicate Club Mentality”; “Horns” Win First Two Games Vs Loyola Marymount And LSU At New Caven Lacrosse Field

With a thin schedule (just nine games on the ‘Horns schedule this spring), the margin of error is relatively small for Texas. Although they appear to be a lock for the Lone Star Alliance automatic qualifier, they still need to win key games against Loyola Marymount tonight and Oregon and Simon Fraser later in the season if they want a workable seed in Greenville.

Last year, Johnny McKnight attracted a lot of the attention, so now it has to be Spencer who steps up and shows what he can do on the offensive end.”

The loss of McKnight – a senior middie this year who became a casualty of the “club ball” mentality that Head Coach Brian Myers is trying to eradicate – initially appeared to be a killer for the Longhorns. With Texas off to a 2-0 start, including a stunning win over then-No. 4 Arizona State last weekend, it’s clear the ‘Horns have moved on.

“Last year, our team was petty one-dimensional,” Myers said. “Johnny would have the ball and Johnny would shoot. We play a lot better team offense now. It just so happens that when we play really good team offense, Spencer finds himself with time and room. We have five guys who can dodge really hard and guys who can move the ball really well. Spencer is going to find himself open for shots and he has two attackmen who complement him really well.”

“Johnny was a great player and I wish he came out, but things are going to be different,” Price said. “We have a really young team and its looking like I’m going to have a lot more people looking at me since they don’t have to lock-off on Johnny. We’ll need a lot of the younger kids to step up and I think they can do it.”

Even with flare-ups of his star attackman’s West Coast attitude, Myers is not worried about Price now being the focal point of the UT offense.

“Johnny got all of the attention last year, but Spencer had the most points on the team,” Myers said. “I think it’s because Spencer is a really smart player. Teams can try to shut him off, and I would encourage them to do that. I would love it, because he’s smart enough to still be a threat.”
