NCAA Div III Lacrosse: Chapman Women’s Lacrosse (6-2) Is Tied For Second Place In SCIAC Conference In First-Year After Jump From Club Team To NCAA

It’s no surprise to see Chapman hovering near the top of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings in its first Division III season. The school is located five miles from Disney Land. Somewhere along the line the women’s lacrosse program must have hitched a ride on the back of a monorail, because, from Day One, they’ve forged ahead at an accelerated pace.
In 2007, Chapman had no women’s lacrosse program. Then they were one of the worst club teams in the country. By 2011 they were undefeated WCLA Division II champions. Last year they were highly-competitive in WCLA Division I.
Now they’re tied with Occidental for second place in the SCIAC. The Panthers are 5-2 with both losses coming to 2012 NCAA tournament teams, Redlands and Occidental, by a combined three goals.
The man at the wheel for this whole ride has been Brian Eisenberg, who grew up in Baltimore, played at Chapman and built its women’s program from the ground up. The vast majority of his first team had never picked up a stick before, but Eisenberg saw the success the men’s program had and thought he could follow its blueprint on the women’s side.
“I had a vision,” Eisenberg said. “But I never dreamed it would happen this quick.”
They’re used to quick transitions, on and off the field. So far in Division III, the Panthers have outscored opponents by an average score of 16-11. And the transition to Division III has been even smoother than expected. There a couple of rule differences, some new rivalries, but, overruling all of that, the team doesn’t have to pay dues this year.
And they’re taking their club experience and making an NCAA impact.
Tori Wilkinson, who transferred to Chapman from Louisville before last season, led the team in scoring last year. She currently leads the Panthers with 25 goals. Nine players return from the 2011 championship team including midfield grinder, Lauren Mah, and rotating goalies, Kara Podesta and Anjali Thota.
The Panthers will need to draw on that championship experience because the SCIAC is having its best season ever. Redlands is 8-2. Occidental (4-3) beat Redlands and Chapman. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2-4) defeated Occidental. Pomona-Pitzer (4-3) defeated Oxy and CMS. Eisenberg said the only thing that’s surprised him about the league so far is that Whittier (1-6) isn’t also pulling upsets.

NCAA Div II Lacrosse: Adams State Men’s Lacrosse (1-1) Dominates Trine In 17-5 Win On March 6

Thanks to 6-goal offensive explosions in both the first and third quarters, the Adams State University men’s lacrosse team re-wrote the record books in a dominating 17-5 win over visiting Trine University, Wednesday afternoon here in windy conditions at the ASU Lacrosse & Soccer Field.
Led by a school-record setting performance by Josh Peterman (Santa Ana, Calif.) and seven more combined goals by Seth Stowell (Lakeside, Calif.) and Ian Morrison (Menlo Park, Calif.), the Grizzlies improved to 1-1 on the young season while the Thunder, an NCAA Division III squad from Angola, Ind., fell to 0-2.
Peterman, who took 11 shots on the day, had four goals in the first half alone, as the Grizzlies took an 8-1 edge going into the break before putting the game away with another six goals in the third period, allowing second-year head coach John McCreery and his staff to clear the benches. A total of 34 different Grizzlies saw action in what was ASU’s best-ever offensive performance.
In addition to Peterman’s individual goal scoring prowess, which included two fourth-quarter goals, the Grizzlies set a new team scoring record for goals and offensive points (27), bettering the program’s former marks of 15 goals and 20 offensive points set against Shorter (Ga.) on Apr. 17, 2012.
Peterman bested ASU’s former single-game goal-scoring mark of five, done twice by now Grizzly junior Anthony Damico (Littleton, Colo.) in 2012. Peterman’s double hat-trick was also tied for the second best scoring performance in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association history and was just one off the WILA record.
The Grizzlies also played strong defensively as they set new program marks for caused turnovers (32) and groundballs (67) in a game against the over-matched Thunder, who were just 13-for-27 in clearing attempts.
The Thunder did receive a team-high two goals from Nic Ruby.
Their primary face-off man Rob Brzezinski also had a strong day winning 13 of 17 match-ups at the “X” while scooping up 10 groundballs.
As a team, ASU won just 7 of 25 face-offs, about the only thing they did not do well in the dominating victory, which saw them successfully clear their defensive zone on 25 of 28 tries.
Peterman started the scoring just 1:12 in to the afternoon with an unassisted goal before Brzezinski answered back just 12 seconds later off one of his face-off wins. However, a 1-minute non-releasable penalty on the Thunder allowed Stowell and Peterman to both score man-up goals just 24 seconds apart before Stowell scored again just 17 seconds later, moments after the expiration of the penalty.

MCLA Lacrosse: Sonoma State Men’s Lacrosse (2-0) Edged Cal Berkeley 10-9 On March 2; Team Heads North To Oregon On 2-Game Roadtrip

Sonoma State Men's Lacrosse vs Cal Berkeley

On Saturday, the Sonoma State men’s lacrosse team traveled to the campus of UC-Berkeley to take on the Cal Bears in an early season WCLL tilt. The Seawolves looked for some revenge after the Bears crushed their hopes of making nationals by beating them in the WCLL semifinals 10-9 in a double overtime thriller.
“We’ve had this game circled on our calendar since last year’s playoff loss to them,” captain Ryan Heidrich said.
The game was tied at eight going into the fourth quarter, but the Sonoma defense held the Bears scoreless in the 4th quarter and sophomore attackman Blane Sando’s goal with five-minutes left in the final frame would be the difference maker.
The game started off with the Bears controlling the first faceoff and sophomore attakman Sean Hayden scoring on a drive from X. Nic Scaramella would win the ensuing faceoff for Sonoma and senior Heidrich would tie the game at one.
Hayden would score his second goal of the game on a lefty drive from X to make the score 2-1. A nice outlet pass by Seawolf goalkeeper Dylan Fannin would lead to a fast break in which freshman Zach Swinford would find senior Matty Gillan on the crease to knot the game at 2. Turnovers by each team would halt the scoring until freshman Brad Bochesa found the back of the net late in the 2nd quarter to give the Seawolves their first lead of the game at 3-2. However, Cal would score two straight goals to make the game 4-3 at halftime.
“At halftime we felt that we needed to improve our clearing game and improve some sloppy play,” Senior midfielder Brian Ponzi said. “There were times where we just threw the ball away.”

NCAA Lacrosse: Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse (4-1) Beats Boston College 17-10 On March 6

One day after seven inches of snow fell in Evanston, No. 4 Northwestern rode an avalanche of nine straight first-half goals to a 17-10 victory over Boston College in its 2013 home-opener Wednesday at Lakeside Field. With the victory, 12th-year Wildcats head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller became the ninth active coach in NCAA women’s lacrosse to reach 200 coaching wins for her career.
Northwestern senior All-American attacker Erin Fitzgerald tied a career best set twice before with her team-high five goals on the evening and also set a career high with four caused turnovers. Defensively, senior Gabriella Flibotte put forth a tremendous effort by setting career highs with six caused turnovers — tied for second-most in a single game in Wildcats history — and five ground balls.
Flibotte (4), Alyssa Leonard (4), Taylor Thornton (5) and Lauren Murray (3) accounted for all 16 of Northwestern’s draw controls on the evening, with NU holding a 16-12 edge over the visiting Eagles.
After the game, Amonte Hiller asked if it was fitting that her 200th win as coach of the ‘Cats came with a four-foot high pile of snow ringing Lakeside Field and temperatures that had fallen below freezing shortly after the opening draw.

“That’s why I love this place,” Amonte Hiller said with a smile. “You have to be tough to play here. You have to be strong, mentally and physically.”
Through most of the first half, Northwestern looked as strong on both ends of the field as it has thus far in the 2013 season. After the Eagles’ leading scorer, sophomore Covie Stanwick, recorded the first point of the night just under three minutes into the game, senior Amanda Macaluso scored the first of nine consecutive Wildcats goals with a successful right-to-left dodge across the fan.

NCAA Lacrosse: USC Women’s Lacrosse (4-3) Claims 12-7 Victory Over UC Davis On March 6

Just two days removed from a pair of East Coast road games, the USC women’s lacrosse team (4-3, 2-0 MPSF) rolled into Aggie Stadium to claim a 12-7 MPSF victory over UC Davis (1-3, 0-2) on Wednesday, March 6. Freshman midfield Amanda Johansen was solid in the center circle with six draw controls and had game-high honors with five goals for the Women of Troy.
“I’m really happy and proud of the girls for responding after the Princeton game,” said head coach Lindsey Munday. “We didn’t have much turnaround time after getting back from the East Coast on Sunday night, so I’m really proud that we were able to switch gears and get our minds set for a new opponent. The team really worked on the things that we needed to improve on from our last game, and I think we did a good job on those things, tonight.”
Freshman attack Caroline de Lyra continued her torrid string of performances with four goals and four assists to lead all players with eight points. Freshman attack Caroline Cordrey had a goal and freshmen midfields Katie Austin and Paige Bonomi each finished the night with a goal and an assist.
The Trojan defense held an opponent to eight goals or fewer for the fourth time, this season: all USC victories. Freshman goalie Liz Shaeffer put up a wall in front of the cage and stopped 11 shots to record a .611 save percentage against the Aggies. Freshman defense Courtney Tarleton had a team-high four ground balls and was responsible for two of USC’s nine caused turnovers.
Three other Trojans had two ground balls apiece: Shaeffer, junior midfield Ceilidh Meagher, and junior midfield Elizabeth Eddy who started for the first time, this season. Eddy also picked up a draw control and had a caused turnover.
“Elizabeth Eddy got her first start, tonight, and played a really solid defensive game for us,” said Munday. “We’re all really excited for her potential.”
For UC Davis, midfield Elizabeth Landry scored three times, with each of the other four goals coming from different Aggies. Landry also picked up a pair of ground balls and had two draw controls. Tess Alekna led all players with five ground balls and Hannah Mirza had three ground balls, and four draw controls to go with a goal and an assist.
