NCAA Lacrosse: Latest USILA Coaches Poll Ranks Maryland Men’s Lacrosse #1 Followed By Notre Dame, Cornell, Loyola And Princeton

USILA Header I

Who’s Hot?
Princeton (+7): The win on the road against Johns Hopkins gives Princeton a strong start to 2013. “I thought we played with a lot of poise, and I’d have to say I was pleasantly surprised by it,” Tigers coach Chris Bates said.
Syracuse (+6): Just when you’re ready to get out, they pull you back in. The Orange’s overtime win Friday night against Virginia gives Syracuse hope the rest of the season.
Cornell (+4): Rob Pannell and Co. couldn’t have had a better game Saturday against Colgate, a 19-3 win.
Ohio St. (+5): The Buckeyes rallied from six-goal halftime deficit to beat Penn State in overtime in Happy Valley. Ohio St. is 4-0 for the second time in program history, the last time being 1966, and host No. 7 Denver on Saturday.
Who’s Not?
Penn St. (-5): The Nittany Lions coughed up a lead at home to Ohio State and paid the price.
Colgate (-5): What was expected to be big game with Cornell was essentially over midway through the first quarter, flashing back to Colgate’s blowout loss to Duke in last year’s NCAA tournament.
Who’s Out?
Duke: After a woeful February against its tougher competition and a 16-7 loss to No. 1 Maryland on Saturday, most coaches aren’t giving the Blue Devils the benefit of the doubt any longer.
Albany: The Great Danes managed only eight goals in a loss to Yale after averaging 17.5 in its first two games.

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (6-4) Tops Minnesota Swarm 11-8 On March 3

Washington Stealth vs Swarm

Rhys Duch delivered his 400th career point as the Washington Stealth powered to a full-game lead in the NLL West with an 11-8 win over the Minnesota Swarm, Sunday before 2,663 at Everett’s Comcast Arena.
With its second consecutive win over a West Division opponent, the now 6-4 Stealth moved a full game ahead of both Edmonton (5-5) and Calgary (5-5), which fell to the Rush on Saturday. Minnesota, now at 3-6, is fourth in the West followed by Colorado at 2-6.
“To be alone in first after ten games in the West is pretty gratifying,” said Stealth Coach Chris Hall. “Even when Minnesota came at us we held up pretty well. I think we earned that tonight.”
In what has become an up-and-down season in a highly competitive NLL West, Sunday’s victory marked the second time in the 2013 campaign where the Stealth put together back-to-back wins since downing defending NLL champion Rochester and then Colorado in the first two games of the season.
“I think we learn game-by-game the offense is showing better signs of chemistry,” Hall said.
For Duch, who entered the game with 395 points, his career milestone came in the unselfish fashion that has characterized the Stealth’s play all season – with his fourth assist of the night on a Brett Bucktooth goal just 30 seconds into the fourth.

MCLA Lacrosse: Three “Top 10 Overtime Games” This Past Weekend Signals “More Teams In Elite Category” That Can Win National Championship

MCLAThis past weekend was the best in the history of MCLA Division I during the regular season. Not only did it feature three Top 9 matchups, but every single one of them went to overtime. Having a bunch of quality games on the same weekend is nothing new in the association — there are high-end contests pretty much every weekend — but having them all require extra time puts this weekend over the top.

It started on Friday night with No. 9 Chapman’s win over No. 2 Arizona State, Lacrosse Magazine bannerand was followed on Saturday when a couple of higher-ranked teams need to rally in regulation before winning in overtime. No. 5 Colorado trailed No. 8 Oregon in the fourth before winning, 7-6, while No. 1 Colorado State was down by as many as four goals to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara before staging a miraculous comeback for the 11-10 triumph in extra time.

Did the MCLA just catch lightning in a bottle this weekend, or is this a preview of what we can expect in Greenville? Maybe a little of both, if that makes sense. Colorado State will be the clear favorite all season, even though Rams coach Alex Smith admits that he doesn’t view his team in the same way as we viewed Michigan during the Wolverines’ reign. It just means that there are more teams in the elite category than in the past. Whether that produces a new national champion is one thing, but the tournament field will be stacked with at least 10 outfits who could beat anyone on any given Saturday.
