Caroline de Lyra nearly single-handedly kept the Women of Troy (3-3) in a game against Princeton (2-1) on Sunday, March 3, at Class of 52 Stadium. The first-year Trojan scored eight goals and picked up an assist as USC fought to stay with the Tigers before an 18-13 loss on the road.
Freshman attack Paige Bonomi added a pair of goals while freshman attack Caroline Cordrey, freshman midfield Amanda Johansen, and freshman midfield Haleigh Dalmass scored one goal, each. Cordrey led the team with a pair of assists while Johansen had the other of USC’s four assists in the game.
Johansen had team-high honors with seven draw controls and picked up two ground balls. Defensively, the Trojans were led by freshman Courtney Tarleton’s three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman defense Kelsey Dreyer also picked up three ground balls. In goal, USC got a full 60 minutes from freshman Liz Shaeffer who picked up six saves and added two ground balls to her final line.
For Princeton, Mary-Kate Sivilli led the way with five goals. Erin McMunn and Anya Gersoff each had three goals apiece, and Charlotte Davis, Jaci Gassaway, and Alexandra Bruno scored twice, each. Sarah Lloyd topped all players with six assists on the day while McMunn had four helpers.
The Tigers scored first as Sam Ellis put one past Shaeffer, but de Lyra went to goal unassisted and found the back of the cage to square the score at one-all. Princeton went on a short run and pulled out to a 4-1 lead as Lloyd found Sivilli and Gersoff on back-to-back Tiger possessions. Princeton had de Lyra marked throughout the first half, but she was able to score, unassisted, at the 19:48 mark to get USC within two goals at 4-2.
