Attackman Mark Matthews scored three of his game-high four goals in the first quarter as the Denver Outlaws exploded for a season-high 21 goals en route to a 21-7 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Charlotte Hounds at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday night.
Matthews, who tallied a season-high seven points in the victory, led a Denver offense that erupted for 10 goals in the first quarter while building a 10-1 lead.
Led by two goals from attackman Brendan Mundorf, the Outlaws jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of the opening period before attackman Billy Bitter narrowed the margin to 4-1 by scoring off a feed from midfielder Stephen Berger with 7:14 left.
But, the Outlaws used a nine-goal run over the next 17 minutes to take a commanding 13-1 advantage with 6:09 remaining in the first half. Matthews and rookie attackman Chris Bocklet each scored twice during the run.
With 2:05 remaining in the first half, attackman Jeremy Boltus ended the Outlaws’ run by scoring a two-point goal off an assist from attackman Matt Danowski, trimming the Hounds’ deficit to 13-3 at the intermission.
