The No. 10/12 University of Denver men's lacrosse team fell 9-8 in an overtime thriller to the No. 17 Fairfield University Stags on Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn., at Lessing Field. The loss drops the Pioneers to 7-5, 3-3 in the ECAC, while the win puts the Stags up 11-2 overall, 4-1 in conference play. "It's always tough to lose in overtime, especially when leading the whole game," said head coach Bill Tierney. "Fairfield played well when it counted and took advantage of its opportunities. You never know why so many one-goal games go against you, but as in the earlier situations, we will work hard this week to try to improve. We look forward to the challenge that a great Duke team presents us next weekend." Freshman Wes Berg (Coquitlam, British Columbia) led the Pioneers with three goals, while senior Mark Matthews (Oshawa, Ontario) finished with two goals. Also scoring for Denver was senior Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.) and juniors Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) and Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) with one goal each. Carraro finished 7-of-21 from the face-off x for the day, while freshman Ryan LaPlante (Fort Collins, Colo.) finished with 10 saves, his fourth double-digit save of the season, third straight.
