Legends Of Lacrosse: Cornell Men’s Lacrosse Celebrates Former Head Coach Ned Harkness (1919-2008) Who Coached The “Big Red” From 1966-1968 And A 35-1 Overall Record (Video)

In 1965, tragedy struck the Cornell athletic family when two Big Red assistant lacrosse coaches were killed when their plane crashed on their way home from a recruiting trip. Harkness was called upon to assist head lacrosse coach Bob Cullen, and the next year, after Cullen stepped down, Harkness was made the new head coach of Big Red lacrosse at the request of his players. Over his three years directing the lacrosse team, he posted a 35-1 record and won a pair of Ivy League titles that were sandwiched around a runner-up finish.

NCAA Lacrosse: Johns Hopkins Men’s Lacrosse Overtime Win Over Virginia On March 24 Is Highest Rated College Lacrosse Game In ESPNU Ratings History

Last Saturday’s men’s lacrosse game between Virginia and Johns Hopkins, a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2, was the highest rated college lacrosse game in ESPNU ratings history. The game’s viewership surpassed all of ESPNU’s NCAA Championship coverage as well.

“I am very glad to hear of this rating for a regular season game,” said UVa men’s lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia. “It speaks to the interest in this particular game and to the growth of men’s lacrosse nationwide overall. This continues to be an exciting time in our sport.”

Nearly 7,000 fans filed into Klöckner Stadium to see two of college lacrosse’s most historic programs battle for the Doyle Smith Cup. Hopkins came out on top, 11-10, scoring the winning goal with five seconds remaining in the first overtime period. It was the largest Klöckner Stadium crowd since a capacity of 8,000 fans turned out during Duke’s 2010 trip to Charlottesville.

MCLA Lacrosse: Colorado State Men’s Lacrosse Dominates UC Santa Barbara In 11-3 Win On March 29

In their first contest of the year against a higher ranked team, the #3 Colorado State Rams were focused and efficient in all phases of the game, turning a 5-0 halftime lead against the 2nd ranked UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos into a comfortable 11-3 victory on Thursday evening on campus.

 CSU got five points from junior attackman Austin Fisher (Rock Canyon HS / Highlands Ranch, CO) and a career high 11 saves from sophomore Jack Regan (Sunset HS / Beaverton, OR) in the win.

After a nip and tuck first quarter that ended with the Rams up 1-0, CSU exploded in the second frame for four goals, including three within just over two minutes to stake out to a 5-0 lead after the first half.  Junior midfielder Dustin Grybinas (Kirkwood HS / Kirkwood, MO) led the charge for Colorado State, scoring consecutive goals in just over a minute’s time as the Rams began to click on all cylinders.

Even with the five-goal lead, the Rams were far from comfortable at the break, having surrendered a 5-1 halftime lead against Cal Poly just six days ago.  UCSB struck first in the third quarter to narrow the gap, but the Rams scored four of the game’s next five goals to put it out of reach heading into the final fifteen minutes.

The key third-quarter run was punctuated when sophomore attackman Sean Smith (Amherst HS / Amherst, NY) rifled one past UCSB goalie Andrew Noto and then senior midfielder Greyson Konkel (Regis Jesuit HS / Aurora, CO) buried a goal on man-up to give the Rams a 9-2 lead with just under :20 in the period.  UCSB’s Jamie Bridgman scored with :01 left on the clock in the quarter, but that was the last goal the CSU defense would surrender on the evening and the Rams salted away the fourth for a big victory in their final out of conference game of the season.

CSU’s Fisher led the game in scoring with his three goals and two assists while Konkel and Grybinas notched two goals apiece.  Smith ended the night with three points, adding two assists to his third-quarter tally and UCSB was led by Bridgman, who scored twice.  Again, the CSU defense, led by junior Hayden Porter’s (Heritage HS / Littleton, CO) five groundballs, was stifling and when UCSB did break through for shots, Regan was there to snuff them out.

Shooting totals were fairly even on the night with CSU holding a 33-29 advantage, but the Rams made hay on groundballs and riding – scooping up 34 gbs to UCSB’s 25 and turning the Gauchos over on six clearing attempts.  UCSB was held scoreless on their five man-up chances while CSU scored on one of their three opportunities.

WCLA Lacrosse: University Of Colorado Women’s Lacrosse Sponsors “Mile High Invitational” Featuring Seven Of Top 20 Teams In Country

The stakes are as high as the altitude in Boulder this weekend for many of the top US Lacrosse Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) teams. Seven of the top 20 teams in the latest WCLA Division I poll will participate in the first-ever Mile High Invitational, hosted by Colorado. Games start Friday.

“We thought the best way to attract good quality teams was to make it apparent up front that we wanted to make a really competitive tournament and bring a talented group of teams together that would really challenge each other,” Colorado head coach Dan Finck said. “The big thing early on was getting these teams to commit. That took a lot of work. From there the biggest task is scheduling everybody so everybody gets the games they want.”

No. 10 Colorado joins No. 3 BYU, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Colorado State, No. 7 Santa Clara, No. 12 Texas, No. 13 UC Davis Club and Arizona in action this weekend. (See full schedule below.) The results of the tournament could mean a seismic shift in the rankings next week and will be significant for teams heading into conference tournaments and the WCLA National Championships — which will be May 9-12 in nearby Colorado Springs.

MCLA Lacrosse: Top Games Of The Week Feature #1 Cal Poly Men’s Lacrosse Vs #5 Chapman And #2 UC Santa Barbara Vs #3 Colorado State

No. 5 Chapman (11-2) at No. 1 Cal Poly (8-1) – Saturday 2 p.m. PT

COYNE: Cal Poly went on the road and beat the then-No. 1 team last week, so hosting the No. 5 team should be no problem, right? Think again. Part of it is the scheduling. Cal Poly has doubled itself down, playing San Diego State on Friday night while Chapman will come in fresh. In addition, Chapman is a different team than the one that lost to BYU in overtime and CSU up in Oregon. The defense has solidified and the confidence is sky high.

I know SLO is not a fun place to play, but Chapman races out to an early lead and parries a late charge from the ‘Stangs. Panthers, 12-11.

SCHOOLER: Chaptown has been on a bit of a hot streak, winning their last seven games. Cal Poly just knocked off the top-ranked team for the second time this season. This will be an epic match-up between two well-coached, disciplined teams. This will be a great game between one of the best attacks in the country pitted against one of the best defenses, but the Mustangs finish on top, 11-9.

No. 2 UC Santa Barbara (8-0) at No. 3 Colorado State (8-1) – Thursday, 7 p.m. MT

SCHOOLER: I am not going to act like I am totally confident that UCSB will win this game, but what kind of alumni would I be if I didn’t pick them? Jac was happy when I asked him to throw a Thursday game into the mix because he thinks this will be a gimme.

He has a point. UCSB has not played a game in two weeks because they have been in finals. They have also had minimal practice time. On the other hand, Mike Allan and his coaching staff have had plenty of time to get a game plan together. But will they have enough time to implement and execute it?

I think they will, but they need to shut down any hope for CSU. The Rams are fired up after losing to Cal Poly. UCSB has not beaten CSU since the 2004 national championship game. Nothing would be better for the Rams than beating the Gauchos again, but that is not going to happen. UCSB wins, 10-8.

COYNE: The Gauchos are a good team, and should make some noise at nationals, but this is a terrible match-up. There are the X-factors such as limited practice during finals, playing at altitude and the Rams being loaded for bear after losing to Poly. It’s also a stylistic mismatch. The Rams will be more than willing to play at the Gauchos’ methodical pace, and it will mean big trouble if UCSB falls behind. I think they will, and CSU will be in control from the start. Rams, 11-7.

The Mustangs went to Fort Collins and handed formerly top-ranked Colorado State an overtime loss, which was good enough for Cal Poly to leapfrog UC Santa Barbara (which beat the 'Stangs earlier) and snag the top spot in the polls this week. The Gauchos are at No. 2, but they have the Rams breathing down their necks (just one point back).

Western U.S. High School Lacrosse: “Lacrosse Magazine” Ranks Kent Denver Boys Lacrosse (CO) #1 Followed By Torrey Pines (CA), St. Ignatius Prep (CA), Palos Verdes (CA), And Mercer Island (WA)

1. Kent Denver (Colo.), 3-0 The Sun Devils are off to a quick start with three consecutive victories, including an impressive 6-5 win against New Brunswick (Mass.) in three overtimes. Kent Denver doesn’t play again to April 3, against George Washington (Colo.)

2. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 6-0 The Falcons already have solid wins over Rancho Bernardo (Calif., 10-5) and Cathedral Catholic (Calif., 15-6), which are two of the stronger teams in the region. Attackman Lucas Gradinger led the way with six goals and five assists in those victories. Torrey Pines then knocked off another tough opponent, San Marcos (Calif.), 11-7, on Saturday.

3. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 7-0 The Wildcats bolstered their national standing with 7-6 victory over Dallas Jesuit, one of Texas’ top teams. JW McGovern led the way with four goals, but he got great support from his teammates. “Joe Lang and Chad Cohan round out the most productive trio at attack we’ve had at [St. Ignatius],” coach Chris Packard said. “They flat out produce. Our defense has been downright stingy.”

4. Palos Verdes (Calif.), 7-0 The Sea Kings, paced by midfielder Zack Fixen, have dominated the competition so far. Attackman Tony Romeri has also been solid, posting five goals against Palisades Charter (Calif.). The Sea Kings also added a strong 20-6 victory over rival Mira Costa on March 23.

5. Mercer Island (Wash.), 6-0 The Islanders look primed for another state title. Mercer Island picked up a solid victory over Oregon rivals Lake Oswego and Lincoln in the Northwest Invitational over the weekend.

6. Bellevue (Wash.), 5-0 The Wolverines had an impressive showing against some out-of-state competition. Bellevue knocked Lakeridge (Ore.), 10-6, and then Guilderland (N.Y.), 9-5. A big showdown against undefeated Issaqiah (Wash.) waits on Friday.

7. Arapahoe (Colo.) 5-0 The Warriors are well-equipped for a deep playoff run. Arapahoe knocked off Chatfield (Colo) 13-1 and then put together another stellar defensive effort with a 15-2 victory over Grandview (Colo.). All eyes are focused on April 16, though, for the much-anticipated matchup with Kent Denver (Colo.)

8. Monte Vista Danville (Calif.), 5-0 The Mustangs’ defense has been solid this season, especially in 10-2 victory over Amador Valley (Calif.). Monte Vista also had recorded a 10-7 victory over De LaSalle (Calif.).

9. San Ramon Valley (Calif.), 5-1 The Wolves picked up a huge victory over De LaSalle (Calif.). Coach Peter Worstell is confident his team has continued to grow after suffering its only setback this season, a 12-7 loss to No. 3 St. Ignatius (Calif.) on March 9.

10. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 7-1 Cherry Creek knocked off Cherokee Trail (Colo.), 11-6, on Saturday. The team then packed its bags Saturday for a trip to the Baltimore-metropolitan area for three games against some of the top teams in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association. Cherry Creek lost to Loyola Blakefield (Md.), 8-3, and plays Severn (Md.) School and St. Paul’s (Md.) this week.

National High School Lacrosse: “Lacrosse Magazine” Ranks Conestoga Boys Lacrosse (PA) #1 Followed By Calvert Hall (MD), Jamesville-DeWitt (NY), Deerfield Academy (MA) And Salisbury (CT)

It took only one week to get a new No. 1. Blame it on theLacrosse Magazinecover jinx. Denver, our NCAA Division I men's preseason No. 4, graced February's cover, then suffered a season-opening loss to Ohio State. A month later, Calvert Hall (Md.), featured on the magazine's March issue with U.S. U19 midfielder Stephen Kelly, was upset by Conestoga, 11-10, last Friday. As a result, Conestoga moves up two spots and is now LM's top-ranked team in the country. The Pioneers have won two straight Pennsylvania public school championships and went 25-1 last season, losing only to consensus national No. 1 Haverford School.
