Women’s Lacrosse: The “40th Anniversary Of Title IX” Has Seen A Tenfold Increase In Girls Playing High School Sports With “Preventable Overuse Injuries” Increasing With Sports Specialization

Despite persistent warnings from orthopedic surgeons and trainers, young athletes bent on specialization continue to suffer from preventable overuse injuries, like stress fractures and stress reactions, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. “More than 50 percent of what we see in sports medicine are overuse injuries, which are entirely preventable,” said Dr. Joel Brenner, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness.

Since the advent of Title IX, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the number of girls playing high school sports has grown

more than tenfold, from 294,000 in 1971 to nearly 3.2 million last year.

But this welcome transformation has come at a serious cost for many female athletes. Title IX has inflicted significant collateral damage, including increased health risks for the players, a drop in the number of women coaches, and increased exposure to sexual abuse.

Like their male counterparts, girls have started to specialize early in their careers, working on just one sport year-round, often as a way to capture the attention of college coaches. With more scholarship money available than ever, girls feel pressured to specialize at a young age in the hopes of winning a spot on an elite team or gaining an edge in the increasingly competitive college admissions game. Of special concern for girls is damage to their anterior cruciate ligament, or A.C.L., the tiny muscle in the knee that connects the two halves of the leg. Female athletes are four or five times more likely than male athletes to have A.C.L tears, says Dr. William Levine, the director of sports medicine at Columbia University and the head physician for its varsity teams.

As Dr. Levine explains, once girls begin to menstruate, they become more “quadricep-dependent” than males, and that thick slug of muscle in the middle of the thigh then works against the A.C.L., sometimes causing tears. “Female athletes jump and land in a more erect posture, which puts increased stress on their A.C.L,” he says.

MCLA Lacrosse: #2 Colorado State Men’s Lacrosse Defeated #3 Chapman 10-8 On Feb 25

Trailing 8-5 with 6:50 left in the third quarter and having just watched #3 Chapman go on a four-goal run over the course of three and a half minutes, the #2 ranked Colorado State Rams took a timeout, regrouped and proceeded to score the final five goals of the game to secure an impressive 10-8 victory in the final game of the Southridge Lacrosse Classic.

The Rams had led for most of the contest up until Chapman’s big third-quarter run, but managed to turn the momentum around with the help of three goals by junior Alex Devlin (Langley HS / Langley, VA) over the last 17 minutes of the game.  Devlin scored three of the game’s final four goals to help CSU sweep the weekend’s contests against two ranked opponents.

After a nip and tuck first half that ended deadlocked at 4 goals each, CSU scored early in the third period as sophomore Kacy Carter (Rock Canyon HS / Castle Rock, CO) got the second of his three tallies on a feed from sophomore Sean Smith (Amherst HS / Amherst, NY).  But Chapman seized control of the game for the better part of the period, going on an explosive four-goal run to take a three-goal lead with 3:00 left in the third.  Finally, CSU’s offense clicked into high gear and two goals only 37 seconds apart by senior Greyson Konkel (Regis Jesuit HS / Aurora, CO) and Devlin got the Rams within one heading into the fourth.

The final stanza was all Colorado State as Devlin and Carter both finished their hat-tricks and the CSU defense held Chapman’s prolific offense scoreless over the final 21:50 of the game.  Senior defender Patrick Sullivan (Heritage HS / Littleton, CO) was outstanding, shutting out Chapman’s Andrew Clayton and juniors Hayden Porter (Heritage HS / Littleton, CO) and Tyler Zabor (Rock Canyon HS / Highlands Ranch, CO) did their part down low as well.  Through four games, CSU’s defense has surrendered only 18 total goals.

National League Lacrosse: Colorado Mammoth Drop First Game Of Season 21-10 To Calgary

On the eve of the 2012 National Lacrosse League All-Star Game, the Colorado Mammoth was humbled by the Calgary Roughnecks. Colorado suffered its worst home loss in team history, falling 21-10 to Calgary on Friday night at Pepsi Center.

The Mammoth’s previous worst loss at home was by nine goals on Jan. 10, 2009 versus Portland, a 14-5 game.

Colorado remains in the lead in the West Division, with a one-game cushion over Calgary (5-2).

“They wanted it a little more than we wanted it today,” said Colorado captain Gavin Prout. “There are no excuses. You can’t score one goal in a half – and on transition – and win a game. That is not the way this league works and we had to be better offensively.”

The Mammoth had been the only undefeated team in the NLL coming into the match-up with the Roughnecks, and is now 6-1 overall on the season.

Five Colorado players will be represented at the All-Star game on Saturday at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y.: forwards John Grant Jr., Gavin Prout and Adam Jones, defenseman Rory Smith and goaltender Chris Levis. Grant will captain the West Division All-Star squad.
