NCAA Lacrosse Profile: Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse Middie Henry Schoonmaker, 2010 “Oregon High School Player Of The Year”, Is Seeing Significant Playing Time For The Orangemen; Credits Former SU Superstar Ryan Powell

His situation was turned on its head when former SU superstar Ryan Powell, who was playing pro box lacrosse for the Portland LumberJax, coached Schoonmaker’s club team.

Not so long ago Syracuse University was the furthest thing from Henry Schoonmaker’s mind and one of the farthest from his Oregon home. Pardon him, then, for having to pinch himself occasionally to make sure he is really

playing on the second midfield line for one of the nation’s Division I lacrosse powerhouses.

“Every once in a while you think about how you got here,” Schoonmaker (6-foot-1, 187 pounds), a redshirt freshman, said. “It’s kind of weird. It definitely is. Coming from Oregon, I never really expected this.”

There was little reason to, even though Schoonmaker was a 2010 U.S. Lacrosse All-American and the Oregon high school player of the year. He was excelling in the one of the nation’s most distant lacrosse outposts, and an illness during his sophomore year prevented him from attending the high-profile camps in the East that are essential for young talent hoping to be discovered.

“It takes a lot more effort to get yourself known when you’re playing out there,” Schoonmaker said. “You really have to work hard at it.”

His situation was turned on its head when former SU superstar Ryan Powell, who was playing pro box lacrosse for the Portland LumberJax, coached Schoonmaker’s club team.

“He said, ‘Hey, do you want to go somewhere?’” Schoonmaker recalled. “It was the first I thought about Syracuse. Well, it’s always been a dream, but it’s Syracuse, you know?”

Powell’s recommendation eventually found the ear of SU recruiting coordinator Lelan Rogers, and Schoonmaker arrived on campus in September 2010, one of 50-plus players on a veteran team that was one year removed from a national title.

“The first week I was pretty surprised and nervous,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t have a ton of expectations. I obviously knew how good Syracuse was. I was okay at first and then some of the starters came out and I was like, ‘OK, this is how you play lacrosse.’ It was the intensity. High school lacrosse was more laid back for me, but once I came here it was completely different intensity and expectations.”

MCLA Lacrosse: #1 BYU Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Boise State 15-3 On Feb 10

The BYU Men’s Lacrosse Team defeated Boise State University 15-3 at Bronco Stadium in Boise on Friday evening.

BYU (2-0) held its own throughout the first quarter, outscoring the Broncos (0-1) 6-0. Senior Ted Ferrin had a hot streak when he scored three goals in a row in just three minutes.

The second quarter showed more scoring from the BYU offense, who saw success from their starters as well as the bench. Freshmen Christian Taylor and Andrew Bertha both scored their first collegiate goals during the second quarter.

With a halftime score of 10-1, the Broncos were showing no sign of letting down when the third quarter came. Both teams’ defenses were strong, while the Broncos only allowed BYU three goals.

The Bronco offense scored two goals in a row at the onset of the fourth quarter. BYU responded with two more goals throughout the quarter, finishing the game with a solid 15-3 victory for the Cougars.

“We were very pleased with how our team came out and responded this evening,” BYU Head Coach Matt Schneck said. “We were happy that [Boise State Head] Coach Rocchio invited us to come and play this weekend. It was a unique experience for our boys to be able to play here at Bronco Stadium.”

NCAA Lacrosse: #1 Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse Defeats #6 Stanford 18-6 In Season Opener Feb 10

Top-ranked Northwestern handled a challenging season-opening road test with relative ease Friday night, outscoring No. 6 Stanford 11-2 in the second half to secure an 18-6 victory at Cagan Stadium in California.Stanford picked up 48 points and six first place votes to earn the top spot in the 2012 MPSF Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Cardinal has won the last seven MPSF Championships, appearing in three NCAA Tournaments in that span (2006, 2010, 2011).

Senior Shannon Smith and junior Erin Fitzgeraldeach posted hat tricks to lead a group of 12 Wildcat goal-scorers.

Northwestern was aided by a 20-6 advantage on draw controls, led by the nine collected by sophomore Alyssa Leonard.

“We didn’t start out the way we wanted to defensively but I thought we really picked up in the second half,” said head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. “Stanford is a great team so it was important for us to create opportunities and we were able to do that and earn some free positions. It’s a solid first step for everyone to see what they need to work on before next week.”

Speaking strictly of the offensive play, both teams looked to be in mid-season form immediately from the opening draw. Just 32 seconds into its season, Northwestern held a 1-0 lead thanks to an unassisted goal by Taylor Thornton. Smith got on the board for the first time less than a minute later when she collected a loose ball in front of the cage and quickly pushed it home to make it 2-0.

Stanford regrouped and knotted the score at two shortly after, but the Wildcats regained the lead when Ali Cassera finished a feed from Erin Fitzgerald. Cassera made it two in a row with her free position score, then Fitzgerald got into the scoring column when she dodged hard to her right and fired top shelf to give Northwestern a 5-2 lead with 18:32 still remaining in the first half.
