US Lacrosse Announces 36-Player Roster For 2011-12 U.S. Women’s Lacrosse National Senior Team

At the conclusion of a three-day tryout featuring more than 80 of the top women’s lacrosse players in the country, US Lacrosse has announced the 36-player roster for the 2011-12 U.S. women’s national senior team.

This team will lay the foundation for the 2013 team that will compete in the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario.

This team will come together for several events this year including: Stars & Stripes Weekend in October, Champion Challenge in January and conduct numerous national team player clinics throughout the year at various places around the country.

Major League Lacrosse: Denver Outlaws Lose 4th Quarter Lead And Game 10-9 To Boston Cannons On July 30 At INVESCO At Mile High

The Boston Cannons defeated the Denver Outlaws 10-9 in a back-and-forth match Saturday night in front of a crowd of 7,804 at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Despite a two-goal fourth quarter lead, the Outlaws were unable to snap their losing streak, which was extended to a franchise-record four games. It marks the second time this month that Boston was able to beat Denver, clinching the season series against the Outlaws and a playoff berth.

With the loss, the Outlaws fall to 5-5 on the season and descend to a tie for third place with the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the league standings.

Entering the fourth quarter, Denver held a thin one-goal advantage. Drew Westervelt completed his hat trick early in the quarter, whipping it past Boston goalie Jordan Burke to put the Outlaws up 8-6 with under 14 minutes to play.

Brad Ross scored a power play, two-point goal later in the quarter to tie the contest at eight. It was Boston’s second power play goal of the contest.

Brendan Mundorf completed his own hat trick with 3:59 to play, giving the Outlaws a 9-8 lead.

Boston scored back-to-back goals within the next three minutes as Max Quinzani and Kevin Buchanan each scored past Outlaws goalie Jessie Schwartzman.

The Outlaws regained possession with 54 seconds in regulation, but lost possession 17 seconds later and Boston was able to run out most of the remaining time.

NCAA Lacrosse: San Diego State Women’s Lacrosse Hires Former Johns Hopkins Standout Lauren Schwarzmann As Assistant Coach

San Diego State women’s lacrosse head coach Kylee White announced the hiring of Lauren Schwarzmann as the program’s assistant coach on Friday. The Aztecs begin their inaugural season on Montezuma Mesa this spring.

“I am very excited to welcome Lauren to the Aztec Lacrosse family,” White said. “Her high-level playing experience paired with her coaching experience will help tremendously as we embark on our first year as a Division I program. Lauren’s passion for the game, her ability to teach and incredible energy were only a few of the many qualities that made her a perfect fit for this position.”

Schwarzmann heads to SDSU after three seasons as an assistant coach at Cincinnati where she was designated as the offensive coordinator and handled UC’s recruiting. While a member of the Bearcats’ coaching staff, the former Johns Hopkins standout was selected to the United States senior women’s national lacrosse team in August of 2010. Schwarzmann earned a roster spot as a midfielder and is slated to train for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup.

“I am honored to head West to be a part of the first-ever San Diego State Division I women’s lacrosse team,” Schwarzmann said. “I am excited for the opportunity to join Coach White and look forward to building a lacrosse program that will pursue high academic and athletic achievements.”

During her time at Johns Hopkins, Schwarzmann was a four-year starter and four-time all-league performer for the Blue Jays. As a senior in 2008, Schwarzmann was on the Tewaaraton Trophy watch list, which is the top individual award in women’s lacrosse. The 2007 all-region honoree was also tabbed to play in the North/South College Senior All-Star game. Schwarzmann ended her four-year run at JHU with 79 goals, 39 assists and 118 points, all of which put her on the Blue Jays’ career top-10 list.

Lacrosse Rules And Regulations: US Lacrosse Issues Rules Changes For 2012 Women’s Lacrosse Season Including Checking, Cross Checking, Fouls And Team Fouls

The US Lacrosse Women’s Game Rules Subcommittee has issued a set of rules change recommendations for the 2012 lacrosse season that will be voted on by the US Lacrosse Board of Directors in September. US Lacrosse rules govern all levels of women’s lacrosse played in the United States with the exception of the NCAA and international competition.

US Lacrosse will also be proposing standardized boys and girls youth (U15 and below) rule changes for 2012. More information on US Lacrosse youth rules can be found at http://www.uslacrosse.org/TopNav2Right/Rules/YouthRules2012.aspx

A summary of the major changes and points of emphasis for women’s lacrosse rules:

Checking

• A player may not check towards the body. (In 2011, checks towards the body were allowed as long as the check was deemed controlled and did not cause the crosse or ball to go into the sphere, which is defined as the roughly seven-inch perimeter around a player’s head).

Sphere

• Defensive players may not reach into the sphere to make a check

• Offensive players will not be permitted to hold their crosses in the sphere so that a check can not be made. (This is not a rule change, but a change in emphasis).

Cross Checking

• A point of emphasis in 2012 will be that the use of a player’s shaft to hit, push or displace an opponent will not be permitted. (Previously, this foul was included under the Illegal Use of the Crosse section, but will not be stressed in its own category.

Carding Changes

• Any player or coach receiving two yellow cards will be suspended from the rest of the game. They may both participate in the next game. (Under the 2011 rules, anyone receiving two yellow cards would have been ineligible to participate in the team’s next game).

• A suspended player must remain in her team’s bench area for the entire game, including on-field, pre-game, game or post-game activities. If a player is suspended from her team’s next game because of a red card, that player may not be dressed in her game uniform for the next game.

• When a card has been issued, a player must leave the field for three minutes. Her team must play short in both the offensive and defensive ends of the field.

Team Foul for Offsides

• When the offensive team commits an offsides violation, the defender closest to the ball will be awarded a free position at that spot (no closer than 8m to the goal circle). The attack player that had the ball will go 4m behind, and the attacker closest to the restraining line will move back onside. Previously, the defensive team wwas awarded the ball 4m outside of the restraining line.

Legends Of Lacrosse: US Lacrosse To Induct “2011 National Lacrosse Hall Of Fame Class” On Oct. 29 In Hunt Valley, MD

The induction class for 2011 for the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame has been approved by the US Lacrosse Board of Directors. This year’s class will be inducted in a ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 29 at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md.

Bruce Allison
R. Bruce Allison will be inducted as a truly great contributor. Allison was the head coach for Union College (1957-76) and then for Colorado School of Mines (1976-93). At both schools, he pulled double-duty by serving as director of athletics from 1972-1976 (Union) and from 1976-1995 (Colorado School of Mines). A two-time president of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, Allison is credited with developing and implementing the current NCAA lacrosse playoff system (1971) and forming the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Lacrosse League (1978). Traci Davis
Traci Davis will be inducted as a truly great player. Davis graduated from Ursinus College and was named captain her senior year (1982). She was an All-American in both field hockey and lacrosse at Ursinus, and went on to play for the U.S. women’s national first team (1979-1989); the U.S. touring team (1981, 1984); and the U.S. world cup team (1986). Detailed biography listed below.

David W. Huntley
David W. Huntley will be inducted as a truly great player. Huntley, a four-year college player at Johns Hopkins University (1976-1979), received first team (1977, 1979) and second team (1978) All-America honors. He helped his team capture two NCAA Division I championship titles (1978, 1979) and made the All-Time Johns Hopkins Team (1979). Huntley played in the 1978 and 1982 World Games for Team Canada. John “Jake” Lawlor
John “Jake” Lawlor will be inducted as a truly great player. A four-year player for the United States Naval Academy, Lawlor earned first team (1974, 1975) and honorable mention (1973) All-America accolades. His senior year he was given the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Schmeisser Award as the nation’s outstanding defenseman. Detailed biography listed below.

Suzanne Honeysett McKinny (Posthumous)
Suzanne Honeysett McKinny will be inducted as a truly great umpire. After a successful playing career at the collegiate and national team level, McKinny umpired 35 years at the high school level, 30 years at the collegiate level and 20 years at the international level. She also served on the Philadelphia Umpiring Board. Detailed biography listed below.

Jonathan Reese
Jonathan Reese will be inducted as a truly great player. Reese received first team (1990) and honorable mention (1988, 1989) All-America honors as a four-year player at Yale University. Reese was Ivy League Rookie of the Year (1987) and received the Ivy League Player of the Year award and the USILA MacLaughlin Award as the nation’s top midfielder in 1990. He led Yale to three Ivy League championships (1988-1990) and holds the Yale record for career goals (162) and points (200). Detailed biography listed below.

Sandra Lanahan Zvosec
Sandra Lanahan Zvosec will be inducted as a truly great player. Zvosec was a captain, All-American and NCAA Division I National Champion her senior year at the University of Maryland (1981). She went on to play for the U.S. women’s national first team (1980-1987), the U.S. touring team (1984) and the U.S. world cup team (1982, 1986-Captain). Detailed biography listed below.

Major League Lacrosse: Denver Outlaws Face-Off Against Boston Cannons In On July 30 In Rematch Of July 4 Cannons Win

Almost four weeks ago, the Boston Cannons beat the Denver Outlaws, 15-12, in front of 27,184 fans at Invesco Field in the Outlaws annual July 4 weekend fireworks game. Boston took sole possession of first place at 6-1. Denver fell to 5-2 after the matchup of Major League Lacrosse’s top two teams.

Neither team has won a game since. It could be called parity in the six-team MLL or it could be called two teams not playing their best lacrosse. Whatever the argument, a rematch in Denver Saturday night between Boston and the Outlaws looms large for both sides.

The Cannons, at 6-3, are still in sole possession of first place, but only one game up on 5-4 Denver, which is in a three-way tie for second with the surging Hamilton Nationals and the Chesapeake Bayhawks.

Denver lost two in a row to previously winless Rochester. Boston has lost to Long Island and Hamilton. All six MLL teams are still mathematically alive for four playoff spots with three weeks left in the regular season.

NCAA Lacrosse: The “2011 San Francisco Lacrosse Fall Classic” Will Feature Denver Men’s Lacrosse Vs. Harvard On Oct. 8 At Kezar Stadium

Thousands of fans and supporters will experience lacrosse played at the highest level when the San Francisco Fall Lacrosse Classic Presented by Levi's, a NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse event, returns to San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium on Saturday, October 8, 2011, on the heels of a successful 2010 event which featured Johns Hopkins University and the University of Notre Dame. Squaring off this year will be nationally-ranked lacrosse teams University of Denver and Harvard University. Prior to the start of the competition on October 8, free youth clinics will be held for boys 1st-8th grade, featuring coaches and student-athletes from the participating teams, and a free coaches’ clinic will be held for local youth and high school coaches with the coaching staffs from Denver and Harvard.

NCAA Lacrosse: Notre Dame Women’s Lacrosse Names Christine Halfpenny As New Head Coach

Christine Halfpenny, women’s lacrosse head coach the last five seasons at the College of William and Mary where her teams have achieved four straight 10-win seasons and a pair of regular-season conference titles, has been named head women’s lacrosse coach at

the University of Notre Dame.

Halfpenny’s Tribe squads captured Colonial Athletic Association regular-season titles in both 2008 and 2009 – and she merited CAA coach-of-the-year honors in 2008. Her teams combined for a 20-8 record in league play (including four straight conference tournament bids) – as William and Mary reached double digits in victories each of the last four seasons (10-7 in 2011 and 2009, 10-8 in 2010, 10-9 in 2008). Those four consecutive 10-win seasons matched the best previous stretch in program history.

“Chris brings to Notre Dame the experiences of having been involved with multiple programs and teams that have been to the NCAA final four, won conference titles and produced All-Americans,” says Notre Dame vice president and athletics director Jack Swarbrick.

“From a coaching, recruiting and academic standpoint, she understands exactly what the expectations are here at Notre Dame and what it will take for our program to take the next set of steps forward.”

Notre Dame’s newest head coach tutored two All-Americans at William and Mary, to go with 26 all-conference selections and 10 all-region honorees. Her 2011 squad became the first in CAA history to receive awards for player of the year, defensive player of the year and rookie of the year in the same season.
