University of Denver men’s lacrosse junior Mark Matthews(Oshawa, Ontario) was named Second-Team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) today.

Sophomores Chase Carraro (Louisville, Ky.) and Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario), and freshman goaltender Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) received honorable mention by the USILA.
The four All-America honorees are the most for Denver in a single season in NCAA Division I history. The team was voted on prior to the NCAA Tournament.
“Having four student-athletes earn All-America honors is a testament to the team success of our program,” DU head coach Bill Tierney said. “Mark, Chase, Cam and Jamie are very worthy and have earned this recognition with a lot of hard work and sacrifice for the betterment of our program.”
Matthews, who was named ECAC Player of the Year, leads Denver with 69 points (45g, 24a). He ranks sixth in the nation in points per game (4.06), fifth in goals per game (2.65) and 29th in assists per game (1.41). Matthews’ second-team honor is the highest All-America honor for DU, surpassing the third-team honor Geoff Snider earned in 2006.
“Mark has played at a high level this season,” Tierney added. “He is a very unselfish player, who is one of our offensive catalysts. Mark is certainly deserving of the second-team honor.”
Carraro ranks 13th in the nation in face-off percentage (58.9) and 14th in ground balls per game (5.71), while Flint ranks fourth on the team in goals (27) and points (37).
Faus leads Denver with a 14-2 record, 8.22 goals against average and .570 save percentage. The freshman has started 16 of 17 games and has helped DU to its program-best, 12-game winning streak.
The No. 6-seeded Pioneers play Virginia in the NCAA Semifinals on Saturday, May 28. The Pioneers advanced to their first-ever NCAA Final Four with a 14-9 win over Johns Hopkins on May 21.
Since the DU men’s lacrosse program joined the Division I ranks, the Pioneers have placed 12 student-athletes on the All-America list.
