Western High School Lacrosse: “Lacrosse Magazine” West Region Top 10 Boys Lacrosse Teams Features #1 Cherry Creek (CO), #2 Regis Jesuit (CO) And #3 Kent Dover (CO)

West Region Top 10

1. Cherry Creek (Colo.) – 11-1 – A signature win should be good preparation for its marquee matchup next week against Regis Jesuit.

2. Regis Jesuit (Colo.) – 11-1 – Dating back to last season, the Raiders have won 16 of their last 17 games. But that ended with Kent Denver’s upset over the Raiders.

3. Kent Denver (Colo.)– 7-2 – The Sun Devils missed an opportunity in picking up a signature win when it lost to Cherry Creek, but it rebounded with its upset win over Regis Jesuit. Here’s a common denominator in both two games, however: They allowed six and three goals to the Bruins and Raiders, respectively, a sure sign the Sun Devils have remained disciplined on defense.

4. Bainbridge Island (Wash.)– 9-0 – The Spartans may have played four games in the past seven days, but the results suggest they’re not running out of energy. They held teams to 3.5 goals per game and their most recent victory came in a 28-3 drubbing last Wednesday over Vashon Island.

5. Coronado (Calif.) – 9-2 – The difference between the Islanders’ wins and losses are pretty clear. Coronado has averaged 11 goals per games in its victories and only five goals per contest in its defeats.

6. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) – 13-3 – Plenty of lapses contributed to its 10-9 overtime loss Friday to Torrey Pines, which is considered another top team in California. The Wildcats allowed the Falcons to score five unanswered goals while committing 10 turnovers in the second quarter. In overtime, the following sequence occured in the final 48 seconds determined St. Igantius’ loss: Wildcats attackman Matt Emery rifled a shot wide of the net. Torrey Pines midfielder Cobi Emery beat two St. Ignatius attackers to the ball. And on the next possession, reserve midfielder Bennet Shafer circled behind the cage and converted on a bounce shot.

7. De La Salle (Calif.) – 10-2 – The Spartans moved up the rankings with a 10-6 victory last week over Foothill. In the past four games, they’ve also only allowed an average of 3.2 goals per contest.

8. Foothill-Orange County (Calif.) – 12-2 – The Knights’ last two victories came in dramatic fashion. Brad Bochesa scored with 1.2 seconds left to lift the Knights to an 11-10 upset victory Monday over New York’s Long Beach. The Knights also picked up a signature 12-11 win last week against OC-rival Corona del Mar after Eric Adamson scored with 1:43 remaining.

9. Mercer Island (Wash.) – 10-2 – Its 8-4 victory Saturday over division rival Issaquah gave the Islanders sole possession of first place in the Northeast Division of the Washington Boys Lacrosse Association.

10. La Costa Canyon (Calif.) – 8-3 – An impressive 10-5 victory over Baldwinsville of New York was slightly soured with single- and double-overtime losses to Hill Academy and Timon St. Jude, respectively.

Lacrosse Movies: “A Warrior’s Heart” Completes Post-Production And Will Be Screened At “2011 Cannes Film Festival” On May 11-22

Camelot Entertainment Group, Inc. ("Camelot") announced today that A WARRIORS HEART has completed post-production. With final touches from Lit Post and Anarchy Post, the film is finally complete and will be screened in Cannes this May.

“It’s been a vigorous and exciting journey the last several months finishing this film,” commented Producer Steven Istock. “Our goal was to complete the movie in time for Cannes, which we achieved. The film really stands out. It’s a great family picture with an amazing cast.”

A Family Productions and California Pictures production, directed by Mike Sears and produced by Marc Spizzirri and Steven Istock, the cast includes Kellan Lutz (Twilight, Breaking Dawn), Ashley Greene (Breaking Dawn, LOL), Chord Overstreet (“Glee”), Golden Globe Nominee Adam Beach (Windtalkers, Flags of our Fathers), and Gabrielle Anwar (Scent of a Woman, “Burn Notice”).

The story follows high school lacrosse star Conor Sullivan who overcomes his father’s death through a new love interest and a renewed passion for the sport.

Growth Of Lacrosse: Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse Is “Western-Most” School To Be Ranked #1 In An NCAA Lacrosse Poll

This week, Notre Dame became the western-most school to be ranked No. 1 in the nation. A milestone for the program. Something to stick in the craw of the East Coast powers. No big deal for Corrigan and his players.

“It’s good for the game,” Corrigan said of the No. 1 ranking. “We’re the first team, (outside) of that traditional group of schools that have been part of (college lacrosse’s elite) forever, to be No. 1. That’s a significant thing for the growth of our sport. It’s not insignificant, it’s just not important to this year’s team.”

Notre Dame, 9-0 (with trips to Providence and powers Syracuse and North Carolina left on the regular-season schedule) is the only unbeaten team in the country. Syracuse has one loss.

C’mon, isn’t it just a little bit tempting to wave that top billing at the Easterners?
“I don’t think there’s any question (there’s an East Coast bias),” Corrigan said. “You see people right now saying, ‘I’m not sure Notre Dame deserves to be No. 1.’

“We have three wins in the top 10. We’re the only undefeated team out there. For people to say we don’t deserve to be No. 1 right now, that’s just silly.”

“We’ve built on the experiences (of the last two years),” said Kevin Ridgway, a 6-foot-6, 215-pound senior defender from Kensington, Md. “We’re still kind of feeding off of what we’ve accomplished last May. It may not be pretty right now, but we’re not apologizing for being No. 1.

“We don’t really worry about what other people are saying. Lacrosse is a big-time East Coast sport, but it’s growing. We’re not worried about what all the comments are. We’re worried about the 50 guys in this locker room and our program.

“We’ve been saying, ‘No. 1 doesn’t matter until Memorial Day (at the national championship game).’”
The lifeblood of championship teams is talent. Recruiting athletes out of their backyard is a challenge, but Corrigan leaves it up to the university to sell itself.

“Our athletic department is the stuff of legend,” said Corrigan, whose dad Gene ran that department from 1981-87. “Our program has been, consistently, a top-10 program for over a decade.

Colorado earned the No. 1 seed in the Division I flight after going 15-1 this season. The Buffaloes started the season strong, going 5-0 at the Santa Barbara Shootout and never slowed up. Colorado’s only loss was a 9-6 setback to Florida Club on March 26 at the A-Town Throwdown in Georgia. Colorado had previously beaten Florida and bounced back from its only defeat by winning seven straight games to close the season. This is Colorado’s sixth straight berth to the national championship tournament and its best finish was in 2008 when it reached the semifinals.

Florida Club earned the No. 2 seed after a 17-2 season that included a 12-9 victory over Georgia in the Southeastern Women’s Lacrosse League championship game this past weekend. UC Davis Club earned the No. 3 seed despite falling 10-9 to Santa Clara in the Western Women’s Lacrosse League championship game. The Aggies were ranked No. 1 nationally before the tournament and are now 14-2 for the season. Santa Clara rode its WWLL championship to the No. 4 seed and is now 12-2 for the season. Rounding out the top five seeds is Lindenwood, which is playing at the club level for the final time this year in preparation for a move to the NCAA Division II level.

This is just the second year that the WCLA national championship features a Division II flight and Westminster is making its first appearance in the tournament. Westminster went 15-3 this season with all three losses coming to Division I teams. Chapman, another first-time national tournament participant, earned the No. 2 seed after a 15-0 season. SMU is making its second straight trip to the national tournament and earned the No. 3 seed after an 11-3 season that included a pair of losses to Division I national qualifier Texas and a loss to Westminster.

Last year’s national champions were Colorado State in Division I and Cal Berkeley Club in Division II. CSU, which won the national championship last year as a No. 11 seed, is seeded sixth this season. It will meet Pitt in the opening round. Cal Berkeley moved up to Division I this season and was not selected for the tournament field.
