NCAA Lacrosse: Syracuse Men’s Lacrosse (8-0) Defeated Duke 13-11 On April 3 At Big City Classic

Playing its best offensive lacrosse of the season, at least for three quarters, the top-ranked Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team raced to a 9-2 halftime lead over No. 3 Duke and held on for a 13-11

victory tonight in the Big City Classic and New Meadowlands Stadium.

The nine first-half goals were scored by different players, among them defensive midfielders Bobby Eilers and Tim Harder.

Never a team to make things easy on itself this season, the Orange (8-0) was outscored 5-0 in the fourth quarter and looked bad in the process. Senior close defender John Lade, an All-American, also exited the game sometime in the second half and did not return. He was seen on the sideline wearing sweatpants and limping visibly. Stay tuned.

MCLA Lacrosse: #1 Michigan Men’s Lacrosse (11-0) Defeats #3 Arizona State 12-10 And #2 Colorado State 11-3 On April 1-2

The #1 ranked University of Michigan Men’s Lacrosse team earned a 12-10 win over #3 Arizona State on Saturday night (April 2) in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.

After taking a 9-3 lead midway through the second, the Sun Devils rattled off five unanswered goals between the second and third quarters to make a game of it. The Maize and Blue held on down the stretch to finish off the weekend with two wins against #2 and #3.

Michigan started the scoring just over a minute into the game as sophomore midfielder Joe Hrusovsky (Lake Forest, IL – Lake Forest) [LEFT] shuffled around his defender, beating the goaltender on the far side. Senior attackman and captain Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, PA – Upper St. Clair) finished with a low shot on the crease on an assist from junior defender Austin Swaney (Grand Rapids, MI – East Grand Rapids) following a successful Wolverine clear just under two minutes later. ASU quickly answered just twelve seconds later however, scoring on the crease for a 2-1 Michigan lead.

IN THE COLORADO STATE GAME:

The #1 ranked University of Michigan Men’s Lacrosse team defeated #2 Colorado State on Friday night (April 1) by a score of 11-3 in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse, handing the Rams their first loss of the year. The Maize and Blue jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first half and never looked back. Sophomore attackman Thomas Paras (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) [LEFT] led the Wolverines with three goals, all in the first quarter, as Michigan cruised to their 10^th win of the season.

U-M opened the scoring just under two minutes into the game on a dodge down the left wing from Paras which was followed up by a man-down kill from the Maize and Blue coming off a push call. Paras buried his second at 10:02 following an assist from senior attackman Chad Carroll (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) for the early 2-0 lead.

NCAA Lacrosse: #10 Maryland Men’s Lacrosse Stuns #4 Virginia 12-7 As Terps Outscore Cavaliers 8-2 In Second Half (Video)

Senior Ryan Young led the No. 10 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team with six points oon two goals and four assists, while junior Joe Cummings and sophomore John Haus each scored four goals, in the Terps’ 12-7 victory over No. 4 Virginia in front of 10,545 at Scott Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Cavaliers (7-3, 0-1 ACC) drew first blood less than four minutes into the first quarter with some help from a fortunate bounce. Steele Stanwick wrapped around the left side of the Maryland goal and threw a wild shot over his shoulder. Terp redshirt freshman goalie Niko Amato got his stick on it, but the ball trickled into the net for a 1-0 Wahoo lead.

The Terps (7-2, 1-2 ACC) tied the game at the 5:30 mark when sophomore John Haus finished a nice feed to the crease by Young. Young dodged Virginia defender Scott McWilliams behind the cage and junior Drew Snider set a great pick to give Young the extra step he needed to get off a pinpoint pass to Haus for the one-timer.

NCAA Lacrosse: #2 Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse (7-0) Defeated #8 Villanova 12-8 At Arlotta Stadium On April 2

The second-ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team captured a 12-8 victory over No. 8 Villanova on Saturday afternoon in front of 2,655 fans at Arlotta Stadium. The win improved the Fighting Irish to 7-0, including 2-0 in BIG EAST play.

Senior attackman

Colin Igoe and freshman attackman Westy Hopkins both netted a career-high three goals for Notre Dame. Senior midfielder Zach Brenneman added two goals and an assist for the Irish.

Villanova (7-3, 0-2) jumped out to a 5-2 lead by the 12:07 mark of the second quarter, but the Irish scored five straight goals to take a 7-5 advantage into halftime.

The Fighting Irish second-quarter surge began with 11:05 on the clock on a goal from sophomore midfielder Steve Murphy. His classmate Ryan Foley assisted on the tally. Igoe then scored off a pass from David Earl with 7:14 left in the first half. Brenneman evened the contest (5-5) with 6:16 remaining in the stanza.

Notre Dame claimed its first lead of the day on a Sean Rogers goal with just under two minutes left in the opening half. Another Earl-to-Igoe connection gave the Irish a two-goal advantage (7-5) with 23 seconds remaining in the period.

“We didn’t make many adjustments (after the early deficit). Our guys recognized what they (Villanova) were doing and really moved the ball well today,” said Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan. “I thought they (Villanova) were having trouble recovering off of their slides because they were trying to slide really aggressively to a couple of our guys. Our guys did a great job at not holding the ball and putting the ball in play and letting the ball do the work. You’re tough to defend when you do that.”

NCAA Lacrosse: Denver Men’s Lacrosse (7-2) Defeated Hobart 15-11 On April 2

with their fourth straight win, while Hobart falls to 4-5, 1-1.

Hayden Schuette (Encinitas, Calif.) and Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) added two goals each, while Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.), Todd Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Taylor Young (Littleton, Colo.) and Harrison Archer (Washington, D.C.) also scored. Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario) led the assist effort with three, while Demopoulos and Baxter added two each.

Sam Miller and Tim Bigelow led Hobart with three goals each. Evan Kirk made 15 saves in the loss.

“Anytime you can get an important conference win on the road, you take it,” DU head coach Bill Tierney said. “I thought we were brilliant at times, especially after getting into a 6-2 hole. I also thought we lost that composure at times and Hobart was talented enough to pounce on those opportunities. All in all, we return home 3-0 in the league. We are happy to be sitting in that spot and now look forward to a huge nonconference game against the defending national champion Duke Blue Devils.”

Denver trailed 6-2, but stormed back with six unanswered goals to take an 8-6 halftime lead. The Pioneers outscored Hobart, 3-1, in the decisive third quarter en route to the 15-11 win.

The Pioneers won the shot battle 31-18 and held a 47-33 advantage in ground balls.
