NCAA Lacrosse: “8th Annual Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Showdown” Features Denver Men’s Lacrosse Vs Ohio State; MCLA Showdown Between Colorado State And Colorado

WCLA Lacrosse: BYU Women’s Lacrosse (5-4) Loses Two Tough Games To Colorado State And UC Santa Barbara In Rocky Mountain Shootout

BYU lost two close games on April 1 in the Rocky Mountain Shootout. In the first game, Colorado State defeated the Cougars 14-13 in overtime. In the second game, UC Santa Barbara won 12-10.

They will play Colrado and Central Florida in the next two days. Colorado State is the only other team in BYU’s league and the Rams are regular contenders for an at-large bid in the 16-team national tournament.

“BYU and CSU are the only two teams that are [NCAA] Division I in the Rocky Mountain,” said BYU coach Julie Smith. “Even though the winner doesn’t automatically qualify, virtually that’s what happens.”

Last year, BYU played Colorado State twice at home and lost the first meeting 11-10. In the second meeting, BYU beat Colorado State in the regional tournament by one point, 13-12. Beating them again this season would mean everything to BYU.

“It’s hard to explain the rivalry between us, but there’s no better feeling than beating CSU,” senior captain Anna Collett said. “It would be amazing and one of the best feelings to go and beat them, especially at CSU.”

The team is incredibly young, with 12 freshmen on its roster of 25 players.

“Although they’re just freshmen, they’re very good and they’re on the team for a reason,” Collett said. “They can play at the same level as everyone in this league. They just have to believe in themselves.”

This weekend the team will have to work on fundamentals to win games.
