NCAA Women’s Lacrosse: Cal Berkeley Women’s Lacrosse (2-2) Loses To Longwood 8-6 As Attack “Didn’t Come Through”

California lost to Longwood, 8-6, on Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex. The Golden Bears evened their record at 2-2 after the nonconference match, while Longwood opened the season at 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Melissa Humphrey led Cal with two goals and sophomore midfielder Megan Takacs added one goal and one assist.

“Longwood wanted it more than us,” Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. “We had lots of opportunities, but we couldn’t finish. Our defense actually played pretty well, but our attack didn’t come through.”

The Bears cut a three-goal deficit to one in the closing minutes, with Humphrey converting a free-position shot at the 57:30 to make the score 7-6. But the Lancers tallied with one second left on the clock to make the final result 8-6.

Vail Horn notched the first goal of the game with her eighth strike of the season at 6:25. Cal eventually took a 4-3 halftime lead, with junior attacker Tara Arolla (at 9:12), freshman midfielder Amelia Burke (21:27) and Humphrey (28:11) also scoring. The Bears outshot Longwood, 16-8, in the first half.

The Lancers blitzed the Bears with the first four goals of the second half to eventually take a 7-4 lead at 55:46. Takacs scored unassisted at 56:26 and then Humphrey collected her second goal of the game to pull the Bears within one.

On a lacrosse island in Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell has been defying expectations and turning out winners for years. Terry Foy takes a look at what the Big Red's secret is, and if new coach Ben DeLuca can keep it rolling. Keeping with the theme of coaching transition, Zach Babo takes a look at how coaches turned seven programs into contenders. In MCLA, looking good on the field is an art form that many teams have mastered. Heading into 2011, who's going to wear the crown for best-looking uniform? And, fighting has been a huge storyline in the NLL this season. Despite much attention paid to dropping the mitts, few fans know how and why fighting happens. Paul Tutka, editor of ILIndoor.com, and Terry Foy take a look at that. (CLICK ON "BIG RED" TO SEE HIGHLIGHTS OF MARCH 2011 ISSUE)

NCAA Lacrosse: Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse Goalie John Kemp Embraces Legacy Of “Great Irish Goalies” In First Season As Starter

Notre Dame sophomore goalie John Kemp knows he has an extremely tough act to follow. After spending a year backing up the remarkable Scott Rodgers, who nearly carried the Fighting

Notre Dame Men's Lacrosse Goalie John Kemp

Irish to their first NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse title and was named most outstanding player of the 2010 NCAA championship, Kemp fully understands the standard that has been set in South Bend.

Following the charismatic, 6-foot-4, 260-pound Rodgers is only part of the challenge for the 5-foot-9, 170-pound Kemp. He also is charged with holding up the legacy his older brother left behind at Notre Dame. Before Rodgers, there was the great Joey Kemp, the three-time All-American who graduated in 2008 after allowing just 7.20 goals per game for his career with a superb, .623 save percentage.

The John Kemp era launched successfully last Saturday. His 10 saves helped the Irish pull away from Duke in a season-opening, 12-7 victory. And John heard plenty about his performance from Joey, who works in Washington, D.C., as a bonds trader.

MCLA Lacrosse: Michigan Men’s Lacrosse (1-0) Arrives In Southern California To Face Oregon Friday, Feb 25 In First Of 3 Games On Road Trip

Travel days are always an adventure when trying to move upwards of 60 individuals and thousands of pounds of equipment and apparel, but with a fair bit of pre-planning and solid execution from the players and staff, the Wolverines managed to arrive in Los Angeles without a hitch. The team arrived at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor at 6:00am before taking a charted bus to Detroit Metropolitan Airport to begin the process of checking in and boarding.  With all of their bags packed, weighed, and loaded the night before, the team was confident of a smooth operation at the airport.

After a long flight and some kind words from the Delta staff, the team boarded another chartered bus for their stay at the Doubletree – El Segundo.  With a practice planned soon after arrival, the team quickly unloaded at the hotel, taped up and headed to Glendale High School where they practiced for two hours before taking part in a clinic for Glendale’s high-school squad.  The team broke up into offensive and defensive units and spent one-on-one time with the younger players, going over a number of lacrosse fundamentals and instilling some of the practice regiments that the Wolverines employ every night in Ann Arbor.  A faceoff between Michigan’s Brian Greiner and one of Glendale’s own ended the day on a light note along with team pics of both teams posing together.

Hungry and tired after a long day, the team returned to the hotel to clean up, eat and eventually settle in for a film session to prepare for the next day’s match vs. Oregon.
