NCAA Div II Lacrosse: C.W. Post Men’s Lacrosse Defeated Notre Dame De Namur 11-2 Feb 18 At Grand Canyon Field (Video)
Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.), Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.), Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) and Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) each scored two goals to pace No. 1 C.W. Post to an 11-2 win over Notre Dame de Namur University in its season opener Thursday evening at Grand Canyon Field.
C.W. Post opens the season with a 1-0 record while NDNU, who opened its season with an 11-3 win over Grand Canyon on Wednesday, dips to 1-1.
The Pioneers outshot the Argonauts, 38-16 and held a 26-20 advantage in ground balls.
C.W. Post scored nine unanswered goals, including eight through the first two quarters, before allowing NDNU’s first goal of the game in the third quarter.

NCAA Div II Men’s Lacrosse: #1 C.W. Post Men’s Lacrosse (NY) Travels West To Play 3-Game Series Against Notre Dame De Namur, Grand Canyon And Mesa State Of The Newly Formed WILA
Encouragement has come from inside the D-II community as well, as defending national champion and preseason No. 1 C.W. Post will
play the Mavericks on Tuesday as part of a three-game swing that will also include games against Notre Dame de Namur and Grand Canyon.
Mesa State, in Grand Junction, Colo., school won’t just be starting its NCAA lacrosse program this year, but an entire new conference. The Mavericks have joined with Grand Canyon University – which will host this weekend’s games – as well as Notre Dame de Namur, Dominican University of California and Adams State to form the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.
The WILA will also include a women’s league, comprising Adams State, Mesa State, Fort Lewis College and Regis University. The men’s league, however, brings NCAA men’s lacrosse to a part of the country where the sport’s growth at the collegiate level has previously been limited.
“It’s exciting,” Stevens said. “There’s a ton of high school lacrosse out here, and so there’s a big demand for [NCAA opportunities]. It’s really exciting to be one of the first teams to really commit to one of the first NCAA programs in the west.”
The excitement seems to be matched elsewhere, as the Mavericks will have the opportunity to play against Adams State in April at Invesco Field, home of the NFL’s Denver Broncos and Major League Lacrosse’s Denver Outlaws, in what will be the first of annual trips to the Mile High City’s most famous venue.
“We’re excited about that,” Stevens said. “The whole lacrosse community in Denver, they love lacrosse, and I think it’s going to be a great experience for us as far as getting in front of that crowd, and I’m sure it’s going to help us in recruiting, when a kid knows that every year, he’s going to have the opportunity to play at Invesco.”
“I think it’s great,” Stevens said of Pace and Post traveling to take on the WILA teams. “Both coaches are great, in that they’re willing to make the effort and come out and play us and help us grow the game and give us some competition in the West.
NCAA Women’s Lacrosse: Denver Women’s Lacrosse Opens 2011 Season On The Road Against Jacksonville And #17 Florida On Feb 18, 20
Denver opens up its season at Jacksonville on Feb. 18. Key home games for the Pioneers include hosting No. 3 North Carolina (March 7) and No. 18 Boston University (March 19), plus two conference games against California (April 16) and Oregon (April 23).
DU’s road schedule “is one of the hardest we have had,” according to Kelly. It includes trips to No. 17 Florida (Feb. 20), at No. 15 Towson (March 25), at No.
12 Loyola (March 27) and a rematch against MPSF rival No. 13 Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. (April 8).
When the 2011 University of Denver women’s lacrosse team begins the season Feb. 18, there is a good chance there still might be some bitterness on their palate. After going 13-5 overall and 6-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season play last season, the Pioneers advanced to the MPSF Tournament championship game only to fall in heartbreaking fashion 11-10 to Stanford in double-overtime.
This season brings hopes and expectations for the same success, but this time, with a different result.
“We are shooting for the MPSF championship game,” head coach Liza Kelly said. “And winning that game gets us to the NCAA Tournament, and that is always the goal.”
The Pioneers enter this season ranked No. 20 in the Inside Lacrosse Poll and were picked second in the MPSF Preseason Poll – behind Stanford.
“Every game is going to be massive for us,” added Kelly, who is entering her fifth season leading Denver. “Each conference game counts because it helps us get a better seed for the [MPSF] tournament, and each one is going to define who we are as a team.”

NCAA Men’s Lacrosse: “Upstart” University Of Detroit Men’s Lacrosse (0-3) To Face #4 Maryland On Feb 19 After Close Games Against Tough, Established Programs
The University of Detroit Mercy men’s lacrosse team will be back in action this week as the Titans travel to the East Coast to meet the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
The game is the Titans second ever against an ACC school and a ranked opponent as Detroit dropped a 19-4 decision to No. 4 North Carolina in its inaugural season in 2009. Detroit is still looking for its first win of the season after a hard-fought 9-6 setback at Bellarmine last Saturday, which came on the heels of a 4-3 loss to Ohio State.
Eight Titans have found the back of the net in the first three games, with freshman Shayne Adams leading the way with five goals. Defensively, sophomore A.J. Levall has posted an 8.67 goals against average playing every minute in net, while sophomore LSM Jordan Houtby has already collected 21 ground balls and has forced 12 turnovers. The game will be the season opener for Maryland, who has a new head coach in John Tillman. The Terps return nine starters off a team that went 12-4 last season en route to its eight-straight NCAA tournament appearance, falling to national runner-up Notre Dame in the quarterfinals.
