NCAA Men’s Lacrosse: Ohio State Men’s Lacrosse (2-0) Defeats Mercer 20-2 As Team Plays Well On Both Offense And Defense

The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 20-2 victory over Mercer Saturday in Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The game was the first in program history for the Bears. Ohio State led 6-0 after the first quarter and 11-2 at halftime.

Ohio State Men's Lacrosse So. Attacker jeff Tundo scored 6 goals in 20-2 victory over Mercer on Feb 12.

The defense and senior goalie Ryan Keneally shut out the Bears in the second half, while the offense combined for another nine tallies. Sophomore Jeff Tundo led the squad with a career-high six goals and eight points, while classmate Trey Wilkes was a perfect 18-for-18 on faceoffs in the game.

“Our focus today was to get the ball moving,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “We wanted to really have an unselfish approach and I think you saw that out there today. Defensively, we wanted to stay tight; pay attention to detail and concentrate on the little things, like restarts and off-ball play.”

The Buckeyes will be back in action at noon Saturday (Feb. 19) when they host No. 3 North Carolina. The game is scheduled to be played outdoors in Ohio Stadium, weather permitting. A final decision on the location will be made closer to game day; check OhioStateBuckeyes.com for the location.

MCLA Lacrosse: Michigan Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Kenyon College (OH, NCAA Div III) 15-6 In Final Preseason Scrimmage

“Overall, we were pretty pleased we had a great first half, the guys came out ready to play. Over the course of these scrimmages and really over the course of the season we want to continue to improve our ride which was much better today. We needed to improve our faceoffs and we dominated the first half in face offs. Those were the two main focuses and we got those done and the results showed.”

The University of Michigan Men’s Lacrosse team defeated the Lords of Kenyon College at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse by a score of 15-6 in their final preseason scrimmage on Saturday night (February 12). The boys in blue exploded in the first half but struggled in the second, relying on their earlier scoring run and defense to carry them to the scrimmage victory.

Michigan sophomore attackman Thomas Paras (Lakewood, OH – St. Ignatius) opened the goal scoring on a dodge from behind the net to score on a turnaround shot. Michigan’s next goal came from senior attackman Chad Carroll (Cincinnati, OH – St. Xavier High) with a backhand shot on a beautiful feed from Paras at X. Starting late in the first quarter, U-M’s deadly ride earned them four goals as senior attackman Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, PA – Upper St. Clair) added a pair of goals along with Paras’ second and a goal from junior defender Austin Swaney (Grand Rapids, MI – East Grand Rapids).

On the other side of the ball, senior goaltender Mark Stone (Greenwood Village, CO – Cherry Creek) [RIGHT] stopped the three shots he faced, two in rapid succession, helping to keep the momentum in favor of the Wolverines as they led 6-0 after the first quarter.

To start the second quarter, senior goaltender Andrew Fowler (Grosse Pointe, MI – Hotchkiss CT) replaced Stone and eventually went on to shut out Kenyon in the first half. The Wolverines continued to convert on offense with a pair of unassisted goals from sophomore midfielder Joe Hrusovsky (Lake Forest, IL – Lake Forest) and junior midfielder Alex Vasileff (Birmingham, MI – Seaholm).

National League Lacrosse: Washington Stealth (3-5) Lose To Edmonton Rush 15-14 As Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short

The Washington Stealth lost its second game in as many days to the Edmonton Rush, tonight’s result a 15-14 final at the Comcast Arena at Everett.  The Stealth scored five goals in the fourth quarter, but a goal by Derek Suddons with just over five minutes left in regulation proved to be the difference for the Rush.

The Washington Stealth vs Edmonton Rush

The Stealth still remains in third place in the West Division with a 3-5 record, while the Rush pick up their first two wins at the Stealth’s expense this weekend, improving to 2-5.

The Rush came into the weekend with the lowest-scoring offense in the National Lacrosse League.  That wasn’t apparent in the first quarter tonight, as they got off to a quick 4-1 start in the first six minutes of the game.

The Stealth responded however, with a pair of goals from Cam Sedgwick and one apiece from Martin Cummings and Rhys Duch as they took a 5-4 lead after one quarter of play.

National League Lacrosse: Colorado Mammoth (1-5) Lose To Boston Blazers (5-3) 11-6 As Team Goes Scoreless On Power Plays

The Boston Blazers (5-3) won 11-6 in a rough match against the Colorado Mammoth (1-5) at home on Saturday at TD Garden. Both the offense and defense were critical throughout the game.

“Not the type of game that usually makes a coach feel warm and fuzzy, but to win that one on the short-man was really strong,” said Blazers Head Coach Matt Sawyer. “I think they were 0-for-6 on the power play and we outscored them three to nothing (on power play goals). One of those 0-for-6 would be the five minute major. So we will take the win, we’re happy with that.”

Cliff Smith, of the Mammoth, and Jack Reid, of the Blazers, let the fists fly in the first quarter. Smith got five minutes, while Reid got five plus a two minute penalty for cross-checking. But while the Blazers were down, Ryan Dilks defined the evening with the first goal, assisted by Mike Kirk. There was no stopping the Blazers after this.
