MCLA Lacrosse: #2 Arizona State Men’s Lacrosse (3-0) Has Dominated Early Opponents And Has “National Championship” As Its Goal For 2011

After finishing the last year’s season 17-4, ASU was the favorite going into the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference playoffs. Then after strong wins against the University of California at Santa Barbara and Chapman University, the Sun Devils won the SLC championship.

From there the Sun Devils moved on to the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association national tournament, and after winning their first three rounds, they

fell in the National Championship game to Michigan.

“[We] need to forget about what we did last season and focus on beating the teams we have to beat this year,” sophomore attackman A.J. Redford said.

The No. 2 Sun Devils had a chance to show their skills in a friendly scrimmage against Nevada Sunday. The team came into the scrimmage with a record of 2-0 in MCLA play, but it gave ASU’s young talent a chance to get some live reps and see where the team needed to improve.

Ryan Westfall and Eric Nelson are two guys that we are definitely relying on,” Malone said. “They have been here the longest out of anybody. There’s no question those guys have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders.”

Malone is counting on those players to help the team achieve its ultimate goal — an MCLA national championship.

But the road to the championship will not be easy.

“We [have] got to improve every day that we step on the field, whether it is a game, a practice or we are in the classroom,” Malone said.

And the team is on board.

“[It’s] championship or bust,” Westfall said.

The Sun Devils next game is Saturday against No. 13 ranked Boston College at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale.

MCLA Div II Lacrosse: Cal State Fullerton Men’s Lacrosse Defeated Long Beach State 16-9 On Feb 26

The Cal State Fullerton men’s lacrosse club rallied back early to beat division rival Long Beach State in their first conference game at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, Feb. 26 by a score of 16-9.

 With great play on both the offensive and defensive side of the field and overcoming a sluggish start, the Titans were able to take control of the game from the second quarter until the final whistle.

CSUF came in losing its previous three games but have not lost to LBSU at any point in its league history past. They now have a 4-0 overall record against the 49ers in conference play.

Freshman goalkeeper Trevor Burns received the game ball for his breakthrough performance with an impressive 22 saves in his first conference start.

“Incredible,” was the feeling described by Burns. “It’s the first game I’ve had with under 10 goals let in.”

Titan senior attacker Mike Ansel led the charge offensively, whizzing a game-high six goals into the opposing net, but praised the defense for not allowing LBSU to score many goals in the second half.

“We scored but they held them (back), and if they don’t score we’re going to win,” said Ansel.

CSUF senior and midfielder Andrew Hauke started things off by winning the initial faceoff, but freshman midfielder Chris Lien of LBSU scored the first goal of the game. The Titans responded quickly with a goal by Ansel.

NCAA Lacrosse: Video Highlights Of Siena Women’s Lacrosse Home Opener Against UMass, Won By Minutewomen 16-7

 UMass scored nine of the game’s first 10 goals and despite a second half rally Siena Women’s Lacrosse fell short in its home opener Saturday afternoon, 16-7. Deirdre McQuillan and Katie Maguire each scored their first two goals of the season in the loss.

After McQuillan put the Saints (0-2) on the board first less than two minutes into the games, UMass (4-0) responded with nine unanswered goals. Lauren Corso scored on a free-position shot in the final minute of the half as the Saints trailed 9-2 at intermission. UMass dominated the first half, out-shooting the Saints 32-6 in the stanza.

The Minutewomen stretched their lead to 11-2 moments into the second half and threatened to pull away even further. But the Saints battled back, scoring four of the next five goals to pull as close as 12-6 with 10:02 remaining. It would be as close as Siena would get.

NCAA Lacrosse: #3 Notre Dame Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Penn State 6-2 As Six Different Players Score For Irish

The third-ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-2 triumph of Penn State on Sunday afternoon at Bigler Field. The Fighting Irish used six different goal scorers to claim their ninth straight victory over the Nittany Lions.

Sophomore goalie John Kemp made eight saves for the Fighting Irish.

The two goals allowed by the Fighting Irish defense were the fewest since a 12-2 win over St. John’s during the 2009 season. Notre Dame sophomore goalie John Kemp made eight saves in goal, while his counterpart Austin Kaut had 15 stops for Penn State (1-1).

Notre Dame led 3-2 after three quarters of play and the Irish out scored Penn State 3-0 in the final period to secure the victory. Junior midfielder Max Pfeifer netted a man-up goal at the 11:15 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Irish a 4-2 edge. That was Pfeifer’s second goal of the season.

Freshman attackman Westy Hopkins scored less than a minute later to give Notre Dame its first three-goal advantage (5-2) of the contest. Hopkins has three goals this season. Junior midfielder Eric Keppeler deposited the game’s final tally, on an assist from Sean Rogers, with 3:50 remaining. It was Keppeler’s first goal of the season.

NCAA Lacrosse: Denver Men’s Lacrosse (1-1) Defeated Vermont 11-6 In Home Opener On Feb 27

University of Denver men’s lacrosse sophomore Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) scored four goals and had an assist to lead the No. 16/17 Pioneers (1-1) to an 11-6 victory over Vermont (2-1) in the 2011 home opener Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Denver Men's Lacrosse Sophomore Cameron Flint led the Pioneers with four goals and an assist agains Vermont.

“Vermont is a good team, but we forced them to settle for some tough shots,” said head coach Bill Tierney

. “We were as good as we can be and as bad as we can be all in one game, but we are starting to come together. Our guys are still getting used to playing with each other and this was a good win for us.”

Junior Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Ohio) grabbed his first goal of the season and had an assist for Denver, while sophomore Eric Law (Centennial, Colo.) tallied his first points of the season with two assists. Freshman Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) stopped 11 shots and recorded the first win of his college career.

Connor McNamara had two goals for Vermont and Geoff Worley had a goal and an assist. David Barton made 19 saves in the loss.

Defensively, senior Jeff Brown (Cohasset, Mass.) turned in an outstanding performance for the Pioneers as he limited Vermont’s leading scorer Drew Philie to just one goal. Brown finished the day with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Harley Brown (New Canaan, Conn.) led the way with five caused turnovers, while redshirt junior Brendan DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Denver led Vermont in shots (42-26) and ground balls (39-26), and forced 21 turnovers on the day. The Pioneers also won 11-of-21 face-offs and were 20-of-23 on clears.

NCAA Lacrosse: Stanford Women’s Lacrosse (4-0) Defeats Harvard 18-17 In High-Scoring Game

Stanford improved to 4-0 with a hard-fought win over a tough Harvard squad, 18-17, Sunday afternoon at Cagan Stadium. The Crimson led early and overcame a five-goal second half deficit, but the Cardinal would not go away and eventually pulled out the one-goal win.

“It was a long week for us,” said head coach Amy Bokker. “This was a really tough game, but we stayed in it and played tough.”

The Cardinal trailed early as Harvard came out the aggressor, building a 2-0 lead. Stanford had yet to trail this season and it took it awhile to overcome the deficit. The Crimson built the lead to 9-5 with 6:47 to play in the first half before Bokker to a timeout to rally her squad. The timeout seemed to work as the Cardinal came out with renewed energy and rattled off four goals before half to head to intermission tied 9-9.

Leslie Foard scored the final goal of the half for a hat trick in the first period. Karen Nesbitt and Jacqueline Candelaria added two goals apiece in the half. Candelaria was particularly strong on Sunday, coming off the bench to give the Cardinal the spark it needed.

It took Stanford just 13 seconds in the first half for its first lead of the game as Karen Nesbitt dodged into the box for her third goal. The Cardinal would get two more to push the lead to 12-9, scoring eight consecutive goals dating back to the timeout in the first half.

Harvard would not go down easy, though, as it continued to come back and the Cardinal failed to contain the Crimson attack.

“The defense is something that is going to need to get better going forward,” said Bokker.

Legends Of Lacrosse: Casey Powell “Has Found Religion” Playing Box Lacrosse “At The Highest Levels” In The National Lacrosse League (NLL)

Powell has found religion playing in the box league. After completing his career at Syracuse, Powell said he struggled with the indoor game. It got to the point that between 2004 and 2007, Powell chose not play box lacrosse at all. He said he was burned out and physically beaten down. He didn’t have the success he envisioned, and the toughness of the game was taking a toll.

Now, Powell says he prefers the indoor box game over the field game, a philosophy that must cause a few shivers in town. When he runs into former Syracuse head coach Roy Simmons Jr., Powell said his old mentor “sort of shakes his head and says, ‘You’re still playing that game?’”

Casey Powell, who still wears jersey No. 22 as he did at Syracuse, is playing at the highest of levels. The National Lacrosse League named Powell its 2010 most valuable player. It marked the first time a U.S.-born player ever won the award. This season, Powell leads the NLL in points with 56 and is second in goals with 25.

The oldest member of the Powell brother dynasty will be back in Central New York today as a starter in the NLL All-Star game at Turning Stone Resort in Verona. Game time is 2 p.m. The contest will be televised by Versus.

Powell plays for the Boston Blazers, who are 6-3 at the All-Star break and a half-game behind the Toronto Rock in the East Division. He’s maintaining homes in Skaneateles and in Boca Raton. His parents live in Cazenovia. The Powell roots here remain deep. The same goes for playing lacrosse.

After the NLL season, Powell said he’s signed on to play outdoors this summer for the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse. In between, he’s working as director of lacrosse programs at Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton.

Powell moved his family from California to South Florida six months ago and “loves it.” Saint Andrews has won eight straight boys state titles and produced numerous Ivy League players. In the last few years, Saint Andrews has sent Lee Coppersmith to Johns Hopkins, Jason Coppersmith to Colgate and Mike Shepardson to Notre Dame.
