National Lacrosse League: Washington Stealth (2-3) Lose To Minnesota Swarm 11-10 In OT; Colorado Mammoth (1-3) Fall To Philadelphia 12-11
Minnesota Swarm 11 Washington Stealth 10 (OT)
The NLL defending champion Washington Stealth (2-3) can’t seem to crack the Minnesota Swarm (3-1) this season. After handing the Stealth their worst defeat since the 2009 playoffs in Week 2, the Swarm grabbed yet another win from them in Minnesota Saturday by winning in overtime 11-10.
Ryan Benesch netted the game-winner 2:13 into the extra frame. The Swarm’s victory ended their overtime losing streak at six.
“It’s great to get that win,” Swarm head coach Mike Lines said. “We went into overtime shorthanded, but we fought through it. It was obviously frustrating, but that win felt great.”
Philadelphia Wings 12 Colorado Mammoth 11
If there was any question of whether the Philadelphia Wings’ (3-2) early season offensive woes were officially a thing of the past, the Wings answered it in Saturday night’s first half. Philadelphia’s offense exploded for 10 first half goals in route to a 12-11 win over the Colorado Mammoth (1-3) Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
The Wings got quality looks throughout the first half, scoring on 10 of their 22 shots. Colorado coach Bob Hamley pulled goaltender Chris Levis early in the second quarter in favor of backup Rob Blasdell, only to then go back to Levis late in the same quarter as the offensive barrage continued from Philadelphia.
Saturday’s contest marked the third consecutive game that Philadelphia reached the double digit goal mark, unsurprisingly all Wings’ victories. Star forward Athan Iannucci’s resurgence has gone hand in hand with the team’s recent offensive success. Iannucci led the way again against Colorado, notching 3 goals and 3 assists on the night, bringing his season totals to 11 goals and 11 assists.

NCAA Men’s Lacrosse: Team USA Defeats Notre Dame 12-7 After Scoring First Seven Goals And Holding Off Irish 3rd Quarter Rally In “2011 Champion Challenge”
The U.S. National Team withstood a second-half rally from the No. 7 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team to capture a 12-7 victory in exhibition play on Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The game, which was part of the Champion Challenge, can be seen on tape-delay at 10:00 p.m. (ET) tonight on ESPNU.
Team USA scored the game’s first seven goals, yet the Fighting Irish responded with four straight tallies to slice the deficit to three by the end of the third quarter.
Notre Dame’s surge began just over five minutes into the second half as sophomore attackman Ryan Foley (Glen Ridge, N.J./Delbarton) scored on an assist from junior attackman Sean Rogers (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity). Rogers then netted a goal of his own with 6:16 left in the third quarter.
A man-up goal from senior attackman Colin Igoe (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne/Massachusetts) sliced the Team USA advantage to four (7-3) with 4:23 showing on the clock in the third quarter. Igoe had a team-high two goals on the day. Junior midfielder Max Pfeifer (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) scored with six seconds remaining in the quarter to make it 7-4.
Steven Brooks put a halt to the Irish uprising as he made it an 8-4 contest with 14:06 remaining. Igoe scored 30 seconds later on an assist from Rogers.
A 4-0 run from Team USA made it 12-5 with 8:29 left in the game. Stephen Peyser, Peet Poillon, Chazz Woodson and Kevin Leveille scored the unanswered goals.
Notre Dame’s final two scores of the game were man-up tallies. Junior attackman Nicholas Beattie (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) netted the first one with 7:43 left, while senior attackman Edison Parzanese (Edgartown, Mass./Martha’s Vineyard/Holy Cross), a transfer from Holy Cross, deposited the game’s final goal with 4:32 remaining. Senior midfielder Zach Brenneman (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) assisted on both goals.

MCLA Men’s Lacrosse: Michigan Men’s Lacrosse Scrimmages Bellarmine With NCAA Div I Knights Taking Home 18-11 “Unofficial Win”
After a long, productive off-season the University of Michigan Men’s Lacrosse team hosted the Bellarmine Knights in their first pre-scrimmage of the season this Saturday night in Ann Arbor. The game opened with both teams performing well until the Knights took over in the second quarter, out-scoring U-M 9-3. The Wolverines battled back to even play in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Bellarmine took home the 18-11 unofficial win.
The game started off with a back and forth battle with each team getting chances in the opposing offensive zones. The Knights drew first blood on a fast break as a result of an offsides call on the Wolverines. After scoring two more, Matt Asperheim (Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids) scored Michigan’s first on a man-up opportunity. Both teams’ performance set the stage for an exciting first quarter with high-tempo action and solid ball movement as Bellarmine led 3-1 after the first 15 minutes.
Bellarmine opened up the second quarter with a faceoff win, but Michigan eventually earned possession and drew within one on a goal from sophomore attackman Ryan Dutton-O’Hara (Mount Airy, MD – Urbana – St. John’s)
[RIGHT] on a feed from freshman midfielder Fernando Murias (Rockville, MD – Georgetown Prep). The Knights were tagged for a penalty on the goal, but Bellarmine was able to fight off the Michigan man-up offense and went on to score six unanswered goals to increase their lead to 9-2 with momentum clearly on their side.
Michigan finally answered when junior midfielder Brian Greiner (Grosse Point, MI – Grosse Point South/RPI)
[LEFT] won a faceoff and pushed into the offensive zone to assist Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Penn./Upper St. Claire) for Michigan’s third goal on a dunk out front. After Bellarmine scored two more unanswered goals, U-M came back with a goal from Dutton-O’Hara with the assist from sophomore midfielder Joe Hrusovsky (Lake Forest, IL – Lake Forest). Bellarmine earned possession down the stretch and scored a quick-stick goal from just outside the crease as the second quarter came to an end with the Knights leading 12-4.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders in the third with even keeled exchanges until Michigan started the scoring with a tally from Doug Bryant (Princeton, NJ – Princeton) [RIGHT]. After what looked like a momentum change for the Wolverines, Bellarmine responded with three of their own over the next five
minutes. Michigan went on a run of their own however to close out the third quarter, scoring three of the final four. The Wolverines found their stride, dominating possession, and showing poise on offense with great ball movement, a number of shots and eventually, back-to-back goals from senior attackman Chad Carroll (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier High) as the Wolverines trailed 16-8 going into the final frame.
The high-energy play continued into the fourth with well-executed plays and hitting-hitting action but it took over five minutes for someone to find the back of the net. Bryant opened up the fourth-quarter scoring with a nice shot at the top of the box at the 9:56 mark. Following more back-and-forth play, Bryant scored his third on a great effort with another shot from far out with just 39 seconds left as Bellarmine earned the 18-11 scrimmage win.
The Wolverines will be back in action on Friday, February 4th, 2011 as they take on Wittenberg University in Ann Arbor at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse for their second pre-season scrimmage.

“2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival”: San Diego-Based “Pacific Falcons” Win The Middle School Girls “Coachella” Division Championship
High-scoring attacker Devon Doheny was almost unstoppable in leading the Pacific Falcons to the Middle School division championship. Attackers Taylor Jervis and Cici Ricci were also responsible for a bunch of goals and assists as the Falcons posted a 5-0 record and soundly defeated BearLax Green, 9-2, in the title tilt.
Genesis Lucero and Amanda Marks were the key figures in midfield, helping the Falcons control possession with strong work on the draws and ground balls as well as in the clearing game. Alex Rasmussen was highlighted by the coaching staff for her nonstop hustle and leadership. Natalie Yorba and Sami Herrick anchored a dominating defense that helped Pacific outscore its four pool play opponents, 62-14.
Joe Brown is the director of the Pacific Falcons program, which draws from the greater San Diego region and has players from such towns as Poway, Carmel Valley, Encinitas, Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad and Carmel. “The reason our team performs so well is that we are, first and foremost, a true team. Our players make the right pass and get the ball to the open girl no matter who it is,” Brown said. “The players are the focus of our program at all levels. We are not in the business of lacrosse, but rather handle the business side so as to provide maximum opportunities for these dedicated players. We are in the club game for the right reasons and always place kids first.”

“2011 Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival”: Anchors & Crowns Lacrosse Club (Newport Beach, CA) Captured Inaugural Varsity Boys Lacrosse Division Championship
Anchors & Crowns Lacrosse Club, a compilation of players from the two rival high schools in the Newport Beach area – Corono del Mar HS and Newport Harbor HS – compiled a 5-0 record to capture the Varsity Division of the inaugural boys’ tournament at Sand Storm. Junior goalie Michael Ortlieb (Corono del Mar) was named tournament Most Valuable Player after making 11 saves to lead Anchors & Crowns to a 9-4 victory over northern California entry Team Cadillax in the championship game. Sophomore attackman Jack Ortlieb (Corono del Mar) and junior attackman Riley Robinson (Newport Harbor) were the top goal scorers for Anchors & Crowns while junior midfielder Michael Keasey (Corono del Mar) was a force between the lines. A stout defense was led by Drexel-bound senior Donald Dalton (Corono del Mar) and junior Andrew Wilson (Newport Harbor).
“Many of these kids grew up playing youth lacrosse together so teamwork and togetherness come naturally despite the high school rivalry,” Anchors & Crowns head coach G.W. Mix said. “We received outstanding play from our defense and goalie throughout the tournament.”
