NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Recruiting: Cornell Men’s Lacrosse Announces Two Western Recruits, Sten Jernudd (Lakeside School, WA) And Ross Rudow (San Ramon Valley, CA)

Sten Jernudd, 6-5, 205, Midfield
Seattle, Wash. (Lakeside School)
Jernudd lettered four times in lacrosse and three times in basketball at Lakeside School. During his senior season, he served as team captain for both teams and was named a first-team all-state selection in lacrosse. For his accomplishments, Jernudd was named the 101 Club and Washington Athletic Club scholar-athlete of the year. He also played as a member of the Swedish national team during the 2010 FIL World Championships in Manchester, England. He led the team to a 10th place finish, scoring a team-high 26 points on 20 goals and six assists. For his efforts, he was named to the All-Presidents team as one of the top players in the tournament from a team that did not advance to the medal round.

DeLuca on Jernudd: Sten is a big, athletic guy who will bring great size to our team. Coming from Seattle, he is not quit as polished as some of our other players, but we are excited about his athleticism and his potential for growth on the lacrosse field. I think some of that potential showed this summer when he played in the FIL World Cup and led the Swedish national team in scoring.

Ross Rudow, 6-0, 185, Midfield
Danville, Calif. (San Ramon Valley HS)
A two-time high school All-American, Rudow was a four-year letter winner at San Ramon Valley high school. He served as team captain as a senior and as a junior and helped his team to an NCS championship as a sophomore. Rudow was the 2010 East Bay Athletic League MVP and was a first-team all-league selection in 2009.

DeLuca on Rudow: Ross is extremely athletic with great speed. He comes to California, so like Sten, he is a little raw when it comes to lacrosse, but he was a tremendous football player coming out of a very good program. Ross is a very smart player with a great upside and we’re excited to see how he develops.

Ben DeLuca, the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse, has announced the Cornell men’s lacrosse incoming class of 2014.The Big Red, looking to replace nine graduated seniors, will add 11 players to next year’s squad, five of which earned high school All-American honors. The group is comprised of seven midfielders, two attackmen, one defensemen and one goalkeeper. Additionally, the players represent five states and two Canadian provinces with five players hailing from New York, and one each from California, Connecticut, Virginia, Washington, British Columbia and Ontario.

“In terms of talent, this is a pretty well-balanced class,” said DeLuca. “We have several players that have the potential to contribute right away, as well as guys that will provide us depth this year and could be pivotal for us in future seasons. My staff and I are extremely excited to welcome this group of 11 to the Cornell lacrosse family and we can’t wait for them to hit the field this fall.”

Western Boys Club Lacrosse: West Coast Starz Lacrosse Teams Completed East Coast Trip Playing Top Teams

The boys high school West Coast Starz ventured east this past month competing in the Bulldog Classic, and the UMass invitational as over 100 West Coast Starz players made the annual recruiting trek to New England.

At the 2011 group, Sean Feeney from Foothill HS anchored the defense. Jake Bernstein was a guy who really stepped up and made plays at the midfield.  Bass Barfield from Austin High in Texas played phenomenally in goal.  Foster Wisman was the story of the tournament for the older boys at midfield.  A D1 frame, Wisman was able to break down midfielders and shoot from outside and really stretch the defense.”

Four different teams had the opportunity to play some outstanding east coast talent, while also receiving some invaluable recruiting exposure from top-tier programs.

 ”At the Bulldog Shootout, we got off to a slow start, going 0-3 having faced Bulldog Gray, Long Island Express, and Connecticut Rip It. At the UMASS tourney, we righted the ship going 5-0 and defeating Mass Elite, Long Beach, Connecticut Whalers, New Jersey Patriots, and Turf Island A” said West Coast Starz Coach Travis Begay  “We had some really great players on both sides of the ball. On the offensive side, Jake Bernstein, Casey Hock, Robbie Stiefler, and Brandon Moranz did a lot of the heavy lifting, although the offensive team played as a unit throughout the week.

Defensively, longpoles Billy Schmitt, Dane Farguson, Ruben Pena, Sean Feeney, and Ryan Colby played outstanding defense throughout. Overall, the kids were a very enjoyable group to be around; they were coachable, had great attitudes, and highly competitive.” he added.

West Coast Starz veteran Xander Ritz was thrilled with the younger WCS classes this season.  “I thought we saw great play out of some of the younger guys which is always a good sign for West Coast lacrosse.  We continually see our youngest teams playing at a really high level, with really impressive stick work” he stated.  “Kieran Eissler from Vegas and Taylor Esoldi really stood out to me as the top offensive 2013′s, both kids had advanced level stick work and seem to understand the game really well.

The 2012′s have some serious talent, Zack Fixen is a middie from Palos Verdes and is one of the most athletic players we’ve had that can do it all between the lines. He’ll only get better as his offensive skills catch up with his athleticism.  Guys like Jack Cruzan and Will McKee from San Diego and San Fran respectively both had great showings back east. That attack with Mike Marcott, Sean Doyle, and Chase Brokaw and company was really savvy. Jake Douglas from Tesoro HS in OC and Chas Stringfellow from outside Seattle also stood out with some athletic midfielders.

Western Women’s College Lacrosse: George Fox University (Oregon) To Add NCAA Div. III Women’s Lacrosse Team To Begin Play In Spring 2012

Adding to a growing list of intercollegiate athletic programs, George Fox University will increase its number of sports teams to 16 with the addition of women’s lacrosse, which will begin play in the spring of 2012.

“We are excited by the addition of women’s lacrosse to our slate of opportunities for student-athletes,” said George Fox director of athletics Craig Taylor in making the announcement Thursday.  “Lacrosse is rapidly emerging across the country at both the high school and college levels.”

The newest team at George Fox will compete in the Northwest Conference and the NCAA Division III, as do all of the Bruins’ sports.  Other NWC institutions which already have varsity women’s lacrosse teams are Linfield College, Pacific University, and the University of Puget Sound.  Several other conference members have club teams and could elevate them to varsity status at some point.

The Bruins will play at the new Ken and Joan Austin Sports Complex which is being developed at the corner of Villa Road and Crestview Drive in Newberg, about a mile north of the main campus.  The first field under construction and set to open this fall is a combination soccer/lacrosse field with artificial turf.  Phase II of the project will add the venue for Bruin football coming in the fall of 2013.

“The search for a head coach for the women’s lacrosse program will begin immediately,” Taylor added. 

George Fox currently offers 15 intercollegiate sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball for women.  Men’s golf was the most recent addition to the Bruin sports scene, making its entrance in the fall of 2007.
