After winning two straight Elite Titles as a goalie for the SD Sharkz, Kellie Roddy recently committed to play lacrosse at Cal Berkley and is our August Player Spotlight
How long have you be playing lacrosse, and who first got you into it?
I’ve been playing lacrosse for 6 years. I first started playing because our middle school lacrosse team needed a goalie and they asked me to try it since I played soccer goalie.
What Starz teams do you currently play on?
I play on SD Sharkz and the West Coast Starz team.
You recently had a chance to go back east with the Girls West Coast Starz team. What was that whole experience like, and what was your overall impression of playing lacrosse back east?
It was fun! I liked playing back east. The play is a little more physical, but I thought our team played well.
Recently, you’ve committed to Cal Berkley. What other schools did you consider, and what made you choose Cal?
I really love UC Berkeley and just the city of Berkeley. I think that the school has such a cool history and dynamic. The chance to play D1 lacrosse at a place like that is a really great opportunity. I looked at D-I and D-III schools and tried to keep an open mind about all opportunities.
How has Starz Lacrosse helped you develop as a player?
Starz let me practice in the off season without the pressure of the high school season. Because it was club I got to try stuff out and it really helped me learn how to play outside of the crease, which is so important when you want to become a better goalie.
What’s the best part about playing goalie?
Being able to change the momentum of the game is probably the coolest part. I love making a big save and having my team feed off that.
What’s the hardest part about playing goalie?
It’s getting pegged in the fingers for sure. I don’t mind getting hit, but I hate getting thumb jams. They really hurt.
What coach has influenced you the most during your lacrosse career?
Sarah Spillett. I always forget that she’s a young coach because Sarah is always so together and on top of things. You would never guess she just finished her second year of varsity coaching because she’s already such an important figure in the lacrosse community.
What are your current goals for your senior year, and collegiately at Cal?
I want to get good grades, and I want to be the best goalie around.
Off the field Questions
Do you have any idea of what you would like to study at Cal?
Art History.
What is your favorite type of art, and who are your favorite artists?
That’s such a hard question. I like almost all types of art. I hate the Rococo style though. Anything with that much curlicues has no reason for existence. I don’t really have a favorite artist just because I find out about so many new artists all the time, but right now I kind of like the British artist Paul Noble.
What person do you admire and look up to the most?
My sister, she’s super smart, and she’s really good at balancing her time. She gets good grades at UCLA, works as a life guard and swim instructor, interns at art museums, and still keeps enough time to keep up with her sorority’s social life. I have no idea how she does it, but I hope I can attempt to be even remotely as responsible as her when I’m in college.
If you could sit down to dinner with three historical figures/celebrities/athletes (alive or dead) who would it be any why?
Jack Johnson the boxer because he is probably one of the most dominant athletes to ever live while also having an extremely forceful and crazy personality, Eleanor Roosevelt because she’s Eleanor Roosevelt, and Tina Fey because she’s funny.
What are your plans for the rest of summer?
Sleeping, mostly and going to the beach. I’ll probably make myself run somewhere in there so I won’t get too fat.
