Arizona Lacrosse Profile: Former Cornell Men’s Lacrosse Player Albin Haglund Founded “Lax Locker” In Scottsdale And Runs Successful Youth Lacrosse Clinics Throughout State

“…Albin Haglund’s resume includes being a three-year starter at midfield for Cornell. That experience included being on a squad that went 16-0 and won a national championship in ’76…”

Haglund now is the owner operator of Lax Locker in Scottsdale, Ariz., something he has been doing since 2003. The running of Lax Locker includes coaching, running clinics for kids and promoting the game of lacrosse in Arizona.

“I just had an epiphany, I was 49 years old, I just got tired of the tie and jacket and I saw lacrosse was growing,” Haglund said. “I always had a passion for the sport and I said, ‘Well I am going to open up a lacrosse store in Arizona. I am going to teach lacrosse in Arizona and start youth leagues.’ And that’s what I did.”

Haglund’s experience out west also includes but not limited to coaching Denver University in ’77 while playing for the Denver Lacrosse Club; from 1989-92, he founded and played for the Las Vegas Lacrosse Club; from 1993-94, he was an assistant head coach for Arapahoe High School in Littleton, Colo; and  from 98-’00 he was the head coach for Arizona State University.

Players that have assisted at Haglund’s clinics include Johns Hopkins graduate Kyle Harrison and Virginia graduate Chris Rotelli. Both earned the Tewaaraton Trophy, given to the national players of the year in college, Harrison in ’05 and Rotelli in ’03.

Nutrition In Lacrosse: Good Diets Are Crucial For Lacrosse Student-Athletes

The secret to success? “It’s simple. Eat three good meals a day,” said McMahon. “Lots of good protein, complex carbs and tons of water. Breakfast is key.”

Lacrosse coach Pat McMahon considers a good diet to be crucial for athletes. He plays on the championship team for the University of St. Thomas and served as a coach this month at the Cornell-Northstar Lacrosse Camp in Hopkins.

McMahon likes to cook and prefers the control it gives him over ingredients when he is training. He went from 205 to 170 pounds by eating better and cooking for himself. The loss of weight and better food made him play better, too. “Eating fresh, unprocessed food is just better fuel,” said McMahon. “Bulking up in the weight room and becoming strong are not one and the same.

McMahon is not alone in this. His teammate, also a coach, is Andrew Larson, who begins the day with eggs and more (English muffin, ham, cheese, whole-wheat toast) or a combo of fruit, oatmeal and whole milk.

Oregon High School Boys Lacrosse Recruiting Profile: Lake Oswego Sr. Attacker Blake Heim Was A Two-Sport Star (Football) And Will Play For Towson In 2011

Lake Oswego’s Blake Heim signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse at Division I Towson University in Maryland next year.

Lake Oswego's Blake Heim signed a letter of intent to play lacrosse at Division I Towson University in Maryland next year.

Heim’s Lake Oswego lacrosse coach, Peter Lamb, said there has been a dramatic increase the last two years in Oregon athletes who pursue lacrosse as a primary interest.

“Oregon lacrosse as as whole has had a string of good players that have really put Oregon on the map of the East Coast schools,” Lamb said. “It is now 100 percent an avenue for kids to get into college through lacrosse.”

Heim was good enough as a defensive lineman to earn first-team all-state status as a senior, but Lake Oswego football coach Steve Coury  noticed that lacrosse was first on Heim’s mind.

“I think it was very apparent early on that he was going to be a Division 1 lacrosse recruit,” Coury said. “I think (focusing on lacrosse) was a smart move.”

Lacrosse As Art: Utah Sculptor Mike Call Specializes In Lacrosse Sculptures At “LittleBrotherOfWar.net”

LITTLEBROTHEROFWAR.NET, The home of Mike Call's Lacrosse Sculpture and Art.

Recently, the Hofstra University lacrosse team won its 500th game in the program’s history. As a result, the university sought a commemorative trophy to celebrate the milestone victory.

That’s where the story begins for Mike Call, a graduate of Viewmont High School who lives in Bountiful.

Call has been making trophies and sculptures of Native American lacrosse players since he graduated from Lyme Academy—located in Connecticut — in 2007, where he received a bachelor’s of fine arts degree.

It is also where he was reintroduced to the sport of lacrosse.

“I was originally introduced to the sport as a young child when I saw a couple of Native American handmade lacrosse sticks hanging on my grandfather’s office wall,” he said. “He had purchased them at a Native American lacrosse game in upstate New York while serving as a missionary on the reservation in the early 1940s.”

While in Connecticut, he also lived right by a local high school’s practice field, where he would watch a lacrosse team practice. It was during that time that Call started working with another artist on an idea for Call’s first lacrosse sculpture, which he named “Little Brother of War.”

“It’s a rough translation of the word Lacrosse in Iroquois,” said Call. “And it ended up becoming an immediate success. I sold the first few in the limited edition bronze right away.

NCAA Men’s Lacrosse: “Inside Lacrosse” July 2010 Issue Features Duke Men’s Lacrosse National Championship Highlights

After three frustrating seasons of losses in the final four, Duke finally brought home the NCAA championship, topping Notre Dame 6-5 in overtime. IL was there to capture the entire ride from the first round dismantling of Johns Hopkins to the down-to-the-wire performances in the final four. We also break down Notre Dame’s Cinderella run through the tournament and what they did both offensively and defensively to advance to the finals. The July issue also looks back on past NCAA Tournaments to see if this was the best since the tournament expanded to 16 teams in 2003 and recaps Tufts’ and C.W. Post’s championship wins as well as Maryland’s come-from-behind victory over Northwestern in the women’s final.

For the first time since the early 1990s, there is a new champion in men's Division I lacrosse, as Duke takes home its first title after several close calls in recent seasons. IL staff covers all the angles from the Blue Devils' run, as well as Maryland's women, C.W. Post at DII and Tufts' first-ever DIII championship.

San Diego Boys Club Lacrosse Profile: Jake Seau, Son Of NFL All-Pro Linebacker Junior Seau, Played Middie For San Diego All-Stars Lacrosse Team

Jake Seau is playing his second year of lacrosse. He also plays football, not surprisingly as a linebacker and running back. He said the fact that his father is a professional athlete drives him to do better in sports.

Fourteen-year-old Jake Seau jogged to meet his dad Saturday at the 2010 US Lacrosse U15 Lax Fest, presented by Warrior, just moments after his team won its game on a last-minute goal. His father, NFL linebacker Junior Seau, knows a thing or two about sports.

“I like coming out here. I like the competition,” said Jake, a midfielder on the San Diego All-Stars. “If we can stand up to kids from Maryland and New York, it really gives us that confidence we need to excel in what we’re doing in San Diego.”

This is Jake’s second year playing lacrosse. He also plays football, not surprisingly as a linebacker and running back. He said the fact that his father is a professional athlete drives him to do better in sports.

“Having my dad be a professional player in the NFL and still come here and support me playing not just football, but my other sports like this, it’s great,” Jake said.

According to Jake Seau’s coach, Scott O’Donnell, 80 boys from several San Diego-area schools tried out for the 22-member San Diego All-Stars.
