NCAA College Men’s Lacrosse: Ohio State Men’s Lacrosse (6-6) To Play Air Force At Ohio Stadium Before Record Crowd On April 24

That would be alright with head lacrosse coach Nick Myers. For the third time in as many years, Ohio State lacrosse will play a league rival in Ohio Stadium. Both previous games were boasted record crowds for regular season lacrosse games.

Ohio State Men's Lacrosse Coach Nick Myers

“We’ve broken the national attendance record in lacrosse the last two years,” said head coach Nick Myers, who hopes to break it again. “We’re going for a third this year.”

This will be senior midfielder Andrew Stimmel’s third time playing in the event.

“It’s an awesome experience and awesome opportunity for us,” he said.

Motivation will not be a problem for the Buckeyes.

“You’re always ready to play and excited any time you step on the field,” Myers said, but the Showdown is different. Ohio Stadium’s unique and storied past combined with the enthusiasm and numerousness of attending Buckeyes create an even unlike any other.

“It’s a special day for our program, certainly,” Myers said. “To play in the most historic stadium in the world, in my opinion, in front of so many fans in scarlet and gray – there will be a special intensity for the game,”

Stimmel agreed, “We couldn’t ask for a better venue. It’s the best – definitely in the lacrosse world – and arguably in college football too.”

Former head coach Joe Breschi’s final year saw Ohio State triumph over Denver on its way to the NCAA tournament. Nick Myers’ first team fell to then-third-ranked Notre Dame in 2009. Air Force will provide a tough but familiar opponent for the Buckeyes in 2010.

“It’s a big rivalry for us,” Stimmel said. “They’re a great team and we’re expecting the best from them.”

Air Force followed Ohio State from the Buckeyes’ former conference, the Greater Western Lacrosse League to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

According to Jim Tressel, he got the idea when he was a graduate assistant at Syracuse. Back in those days, spring games were considered relatively uninteresting affairs, especially for 1970s Syracuse football. Tressel said that the head coach of the Syracuse’s beloved lacrosse team decided to promote the spring football game by having it played on the same day and field. Three years ago, Tressel decided to give the Buckeye lacrosse team that same benefit.

“For our young men it’s an opportunity to play in front of a lot of Buckeye fans,” Myers said. “We’re very thankful for the opportunity.”

A victory in the Horseshoe would salvage a bumpy season that has not seen consecutive regulation wins or loses. At exactly .500, a win in front of more than tens of thousands of their biggest fans would do much to right the ship for the remainder of the season.

“It’s an exciting day,” Myers said.

Western College Men’s Lacrosse: Dominican (CA) Men’s Lacrosse Defeated Westminster College 17-11 To Win Baggataway Tournament On April 18 (Video)

The Dominican University of California men’s lacrosse team powered to a 17-11 win on Senior Day over NAIA Westminster College on Sunday to capture the program’s first ever Baggataway Tournament Cup.

The tournament, founded in 2008, is the annual end-of-season tournament played between Dominican, Grand Canyon University, and Westminster. The trophy features a Native American holding a lacrosse stick and is passed from winner to winner every season.  The home team has now won the tournament every season. Dominican’s two seniors, Joey Sullivan and Josh McKay, who were honored in a pregame ceremony, have now played in all three tournaments.

California College Women’s Lacrosse: Santa Clara Women’s Lacrosse Defeated UC Santa Barbara 12-6 To Win WWLL Title And Automatic Bid To WDIA Tournament In Scottsdale, AZ On May 5

The UCSB women’s lacrosse team traveled to Los Angeles over the weekend to open the postseason with the Western Women’s Lacrosse League championship tournament, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the WDIA tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz. that begins on May 5. After defeating #16 Arizona State and the #4 Mustangs of Cal Poly, the Gauchos missed out on a three-peat as WWLL champions, as they fell to #1 Santa Clara in the championship match.

Things went UCSB’s way against Arizona State almost immediately. Sixteen seconds into the game, junior midfielder Alyssa Nelsen got the scoring started before four of her teammates combined for five unanswered goals. Arizona finally got on the board with less than 10 minutes left, but Santa Barbara held a 6-1 lead heading into the half.

The second half did not go as smoothly. The Sun Devils struck first out of the stoppage to make the score 6-2 and went on to match UCSB goal for goal to win the half 7-6. However, UCSB had a huge advantage in ground balls, winning 17 in each half to limit Arizona State’s possessions and help give them a 12-8 victory.

“[Ground balls] were an area where we outmatched ASU,” Head Coach Paul Ramsey said. “They put the ball down for us to get it far too many times.”
Not long after that game ended, UCSB was back on the field for their next game against Cal Poly. Just two weeks earlier, Cal Poly had handed UCSB a sound 21-9 drubbing, and while the Gauchos tried to keep revenge off their minds, it was hard to do with so much riding on the outcome of the game.

“Revenge or payback really shouldn’t be a factor when planning for a game against someone the second or third time around, but it does affect your focus” Ramsey said.

Sophomore attacker Megan Dawe opened the scoring 55 seconds into the game, and after a very back-and-forth half, the Gauchos went into the break with a 6-4 lead. Just like Arizona, Cal Poly won the second half by a goal (5-4) but was thwarted by UCSB’s superior shooting and ground ball control, which gave Santa Barbara the 10-9 win and a chance to play for the championship.

“Our defense played outstanding,” Ramsey said. “If we continue that and get draw controls and have patience on offense, we can beat anyone we play in the postseason.”

The first time UCSB faced Santa Clara this season, the Broncos barely escaped with a 21-11 win. After the Gauchos played them to a 4-4 tie in the first half on Sunday, it looked as if it was going to be another close game. However, Santa Barbara had several key turnovers in the second half that Santa Clara was able to capitalize on, letting the Broncos take home the WWLL title with a 12-6 win.

“We won the first draw of the second half and then turned it over on the first pass after possession,” Ramsey said. ”They went down and scored. That was the second half for us all game, giving them the game.”

The women return to action May 5 for the WDIA tournament. They are currently the third seed in the tournament and are set to play their first game against #14 Oregon.

California College Women’s Lacrosse: Cal Berkeley Attacker Alyse Kennedy Named MPSF Player Of The Week For April 19

California senior attacker Alyse Kennedy was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Kennedy scored a team season-high five goals in the Golden Bears’ 17-8 nonconference win at Vermont on April 18 in Burlington, Vt. In Cal’s previous game, Kennedy scored one goal in a 13-5 loss at Albany on April 16 in upstate New York. She also collected two draw controls and one ground ball in each of the two games.

Kennedy’s five goals against Vermont are the most a Bear has scored since she struck for six goals against Saint Mary’s in 2009. Cal’s leader in points (35), goals (30) and draw controls (26), Kennedy currently ranks fifth in the MPSF in goals per game (2.14) and is tied for the MPSF lead in game-winning goals (2).

Cal returns to action when it plays at MPSF opponent Saint Mary’s on Friday, April 23, and then hosts MPSF opponent Fresno State on Sunday, April 25.
