Orange County High School Boys Lacrosse: Corona Del Mar Boys Lacrosse (9-1) Defeats Mount St. Joseph (MD) 9-4 As Ryan Mix Scores 7 Goals

Before the Corona del Mar High boys’ lacrosse team took on Mount St. Joseph of Baltimore, Md. Saturday, Sea Kings senior Ryan Mix scouted the Gaels.

He saw that Mount St. Joseph was playing its third game in as many days while on its visit to Southern California. He expected the Gaels to be a bit tired. He wanted to take attack that weakness.

Ryan Mix, the attackman bound for Notre Dame, didn’t hold back, scoring seven goals to lead CdM to a 9-4 nonleague win at Peninsula Park. His seven goals tied a career-high.

“I liked the matchup I had,” said Mix, who helped the Sea Kings improve to 9-1. “I knew they would be tired from playing so many games. And, when they didn’t slide over, I was able to put it in the net.”

The Gaels won at Rancho Bernardo of San Diego, 7-6, Thursday, and lost at St. Margaret’s, 8-5, Friday.

CdM Coach G.W. Mix said Mount St. Joseph makes the trip to this area every other year. He should know, he helped set up the games. Mike Warren, who’s involved with the St. Margaret’s lacrosse program, attended Mount St. Joseph. Bruce Seitz, the head coach at Rancho Bernardo, has a connection with G.W. Mix and Warren.

The three were lifeguards together while growing up on the East Coast, G.W. Mix said.

The CdM coach knew it would be an important week for his team, playing against the two teams Warren is affiliated with, as well as La Costa Canyon, ranked No. 1 in the state by laxpower.com.

The No. 4-ranked Sea Kings beat No. 9 St. Margaret’s, 7-5, Wednesday, but lost to La Costa Canyon, 16-4, April 3.

“To get out of these games 2-1 is great,” G.W. Mix said. “Considering what people expected out of this team, we are excited. We graduated so many kids from last year’s team. We lost Noah Molnar, who’s now playing for Lehigh, and we lost others … I think we lost about over 100 goals that graduated last year.”

Mix said the Sea Kings have replaced last year’s scorers with a committee effort. CdM has also played stellar defense.

The Sea Kings shut out the Gaels in the second half, as seniors Alex Mainthow and JD Abbott, and junior Donald Dalton weren’t thinking about giving the visitors a warm welcome. Senior goalie Hugh Russell was also a big part of that, recording five saves.

On offense, sophomore Michael Keasey and freshman Jack Ortleib scored one goal each. Sophomore Michael Ortleib and senior Daniel Noto both had two assists, while senior Randall Nelson added an assist.
