Western College Men’s Lacrosse: BYU Men’s Lacrosse Begins 2010 Season With Trip To California To Face San Diego State Feb. 11 And Chapman Feb. 13

The BYU men’s lacrosse team will embark on a new season on Thursday against SDSU in San Diego.

In 2007, the lacrosse team won the Men’s College Lacrosse Association national championship. In 2008, the team made it to the semi-finals, where it lost to Chapman University. Lax Power, a national lacrosse poll, ranked BYU No. 4 in the country to end last season, while the MCLA magazine has BYU at No. 3 to begin the 2010 season.

There are more than 200 teams that currently participate in the MCLA, more than 100 of which are in the first division of the MCLA. BYU joins UCLA, Michigan, Florida State and USC as one of the colleges in the highly competitive first division league.

There have been some changes to the lacrosse team this year. Although coach Matt Schneck has been part of the coaching staff for eight years, this will be his first as head coach. Two key points the new coaching staff is emphasizing are discipline on and off the field, as well as conditioning.

“We’re working on some things to try and help our team be prepared for MCLA tournament,” Schneck said. “At the tournament, we will play four games in five days and that can really wear on the team.”

When asked who to watch this season, Schneck said, “Elliot Grow,” without hesitation.

Grow, a senior out of Salt Lake City, was named national preseason player of the year for the MCLA.

“I feel honored.” Grow said. “There are a lot of guys they could have chosen and I’m honored to have been picked.”

Grow, who will be a key figure in the midfield, is excited and confident with this year’s team and coaching staff.

“We’re clicking on and off the field,” he said.

Because the players have known Schneck from previous years, they said it has been great for the team and the program that he has filled the role as head coach.

The Cougars’ first home game will be against UVU in Provo on Feb. 27.

Texas College Men’s Lacrosse: Texas A&M Men’s Lacrosse 2010 Season Features Arizona, USC, Tennessee And Texas

When people think of spring sports, they think mainly of baseball, softball and tennis.

However, the club lacrosse team deserves much more credit than they receive. It is not a money sport like football or basketball, but the men on the lacrosse team should get a little recognition for what they do.

Men’s lacrosse is known as the fastest growing sport in the nation and is one of the most athletic and exciting sports out there, said junior goalie Ben Jacobson.

“It’s the fastest game on two feet,” he said. “It’s like a physical chess game because you have to be smart and extremely physically fit to play.”

However, it seems most people don’t know anything about it. When twenty people on the Texas A&M campus were polled, only two people actually knew how the game was played, and none had ever been to a lacrosse game. Out of the same twenty students polled, twenty knew everything about football and nineteen had been to a football game.

This year, the A&M men’s lacrosse team consists of 44 men, including mostly underclassmen. Of those men four are seniors, including player to watch Jason Jolly. Jolly is the four-year starting goalie and was named to the All-American team last year.

The Aggies have a big tournament coming up this weekend to kick off their season. It is a high school benefit tournament, and rivals Arizona and Texas Tech will participate. The Aggies’ first game will be against Arizona at 7 p.m.

“We took a trip out to Arizona three years ago to play them,” said junior defenseman Cory Hartstein. “They used to be really good. The team went through a tough few years, but they recently got their old coach back, so they should be pretty good.”

The Red Raiders will challenge the Aggies at noon on Sunday.
“Tech is somewhat of a rivalry, and we always butt heads with them,”

Jacobson said. “They’re in our conference, but not our division. We have a bit of history because we have both been really good.”

Two years ago, the team went to nationals. Last year after having an off year, in which they were still the Lonestar Alliance Division conference champions.

When asked what the key to success for the team would be, Hartstein said it would be their team cohesiveness.

“Our biggest thing will be coming together as a team,” Hartstein said. “We’ve got a lot of new guys, and we just need to make sure we use them to their full potential.”

Although it is very early in the season, the guys already know what they want to accomplish.

“Our goal is to win the conference and make it to the National Championship in Denver,” Jacobson said. “I think we can do that if we focus on that goal.”

They said that going to their games can be a good date. They have music and admission is free.

Home games will take place at Penberthy Fields. Their season will conclude on April 9, before they begin their playoff run.

“We are an ambitious young team looking to reclaim the Lonestar Alliance after a rebuilding year,” said Hartstein. “Our team is looking to fulfill its potential and to come together as a brotherhood. We want to maintain the prestige of A&M lacrosse.”

College Men’s Lacrosse: Lehigh Men’s Lacrosse Features Two California Freshman Midfielders, Carlton Fisher (St. Ignatius Prep) And Noah Molnar (Corona Del Mar)

The freshmen midfielders are a large and talented group that includes Derek Bogorowski, David DiMaria, Carlton Fisher, Brian Hess, Bryan Hopper, Noah Molnar, Devin Pullara, Chris Rinaldi and Ryan Snyder.

Carlton Fisher (Fr., Midfielder, St. Ignatius Prep, San Francisco, CA): “I chose Lehigh because of the academic and athletic excellence that it has to offer. The people and coaching staff made an impactful impression on me and were the types of people that I wanted to surround myself with.”

DiMaria and Fisher may also see time at attack, with both of the newest Mountain

Noah Molnar (Fr., Midfielder, Corona Del Mar, CA): “I chose Lehigh because I loved the vision that Coach Cassese had for this program. I knew he was someone that was dedicated to building a winning program and I wanted nothing more than to be a part of that family. I also chose Lehigh because of their high academic reputation and strong business school.”

Hawks garnering All-America accolades during their high school careers and Hess was a member of a Deerfield Academy team that ranked tenth in the nation a season ago.  Hopper comes to Lehigh after earning honorable mention All-State accolades in New Jersey, while Molnar earned All-America and Orange County Player of the Year honors last season.

With a large roster consisting of a good deal of returning experience, as well as an exciting group of newcomers the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team is looking forward to the 2010 season.  Third-year head coach Kevin Cassese continues to mold the Mountain Hawks into a fast-paced, physical unit that can compete with any team it faces and last year the former Duke All-American proved just that in leading the Brown and White to a pair of road upsets versus nationally ranked foes in back-to-back contests.  With a large majority of its offensive contributors returning and solid pieces throughout the defense coming back, Lehigh is poised to make more headlines in 2010.
Lehigh scored nearly 40 more goals in 2009 than it did the previous season, and Cassese would like to see the Mountain Hawks offense continue that type of growth in 2010.  Despite losing Ricky Cornetta, who ranked tenth in the nation last season in points per game, and Max Dahlem who totaled 20 points and was the leader of the offense, Lehigh returns a very strong group of attackmen that Cassese will work with to put increased numbers on the scoreboard.  Senior Brian Bienemann leads the group after being shifted from midfield during the off-season.  Bienemann is Lehigh’s leading returning scorer after posting totals of 21 goals and six assists a season ago.

Classmates Taylor Castagna, Chris Lubin, and John Henry McNierney give the Mountain Hawks a strong senior contingent of attackmen for Cassese to lean upon.  Castagna missed all of last year with an injury but impressed the coaching staff during the fall season and individual workouts with his progress.  Lubin showed he is a more than capable scorer last season with 14 goals and two assists, while McNierney has appeared in over 20 games throughout his career and scored five goals during that time.  Another senior, Max Copelan, missed the 2009 season and will unfortunately once again miss the upcoming season due to injury, but he was voted a captain by his teammates, indicating the level of trust and respect they have towards him.

Other members of the attack include sophomores Adam Johnston and Kevin Donovan.  Johnston made quite a splash last year for the Mountain Hawks, appearing in all 15 games and scoring 15 goals to go along with five assists and 29 ground balls.  Now a year older and stronger, this Maryland native will be asked to take on an even larger role within the offense.  Donovan appeared in eight games as a freshman and scored one goal.

The newest members of the Lehigh attack include Alex Drake, Dante Fantoni, and Kyle Stiefel.  Drake, a high school All-American and the 2009 Ohio Player of the Year, and Fantoni, an All-League selection at St. Anthony’s High School in New York, had strong fall seasons and will be given a chance to contribute right from the start, while Stiefel scored 45 goals last season while earning All-Mid-Atlantic Prep honors at the Peddie School.

The Mountain Hawks return a large group of midfielders that saw plenty of time in 2009 as well as a talented group of newcomers who will be looked upon to make an impact.  Seniors Kyle Gentile, Andrew Horgan, and Chris Linko lead the group with Gentile appearing in all 15 games a season ago and contributing three goals, 24 ground balls and 17 face-off wins.  Linko saw time in 14 games in 2009 and totaled three points and six ground balls, while Horgan will look to make a push for increased playing time in his senior season.

Juniors Will Scudder, Jonathan Stumpf, Dustin Clark, Tom Hueber, and Chris Ryan, along with sophomores Cameron Lao-Gosney, Roman Lao-Gosney, Trevor Stapleton, Matt Fullam, and Dana Frye comprise the remaining members of the upperclass midfielders.  Scudder returns as the Mountain Hawks’ top face-off man after winning 56% last year, good for 17th best in America.  Stumpf sat last season out but made quite an impact as a freshman when he started 12 games, scored ten goals and earned a Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor.  His return should help bolster Lehigh’s offense.  Clark has appeared in 25 games during the last two seasons and totaled six points during that time, while Hueber has seen limited time during his first two seasons in the Brown and White but is expected to make a push this year. Ryan transferred to Lehigh from the University of Pittsburgh and will add more depth in the midfield.

Cameron Lao-Gosney got his career off to a fast start as he appeared in 15 games as a freshman, starting nine along the way.  His best game came in Lehigh’s upset of Army when he scored five goals, including the game-winner in overtime.  For his efforts, Lao-Gosney was chosen as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, and following the season Inside Lacrosse named him one of the nation’s top-20 freshmen.  Roman Lao-Gosney battled injuries in his first season, but did manage to appear in nine games and total five points in those contests, and Stapleton started two games for the Mountain Hawks as a freshman, picking up five ground balls and causing five turnovers in that time.  Frye appeared in six games in 2009, while Fullam did not play last season due to injury.

The freshmen midfielders are a large and talented group that includes Derek Bogorowski, David DiMaria, Carlton Fisher, Brian Hess, Bryan Hopper, Noah Molnar, Devin Pullara, Chris Rinaldi and Ryan Snyder.  Bogorowski was an All-State selection in high school where he helped lead LaSalle College High School to a pair of state championships.  DiMaria and Fisher may also see time at attack, with both of the newest Mountain Hawks garnering All-America accolades during their high school careers and Hess was a member of a Deerfield Academy team that ranked tenth in the nation a season ago.  Hopper comes to Lehigh after earning honorable mention All-State accolades in New Jersey, while Molnar earned All-America and Orange County Player of the Year honors last season.  Pullara was a First-Team All-State face-off specialist at Arapahoe High School in Colorado and Rinaldi and Snyder were four and three year letterwinners, respectively, in high school.

Assistant coaches Taylor Wray and Brendan Callahan will once again mentor the Lehigh defense in 2010.  Wray is a member of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League, while Callahan is a former NCAA save percentage champion from Stony Brook University.  That pair will look to senior captain Evan Guerrero, a 2009 All-Patriot League selection, to anchor the Mountain Hawks defense.  A native of California, Guerrero has started every game the last two seasons and last year he scooped up 42 ground balls and caused 39 turnovers, including a career-best nine in the opener versus Saint Joseph’s.  Playing alongside Guerrero is fellow captain, junior Richard Bradley.  Bradley has been a mainstay on the Lehigh “D” since his freshman year and last season he totaled 31 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers and also won 6-of-14 face-offs.

Other returners on defense are juniors Ryan Brown and Chris Rhodes and sophomores Blaise Fullen and Gaige Flint.  Brown appeared in 11 games in 2009, scooping up ten ground balls in that time, while Rhodes has played in 13 games during his first two seasons, with four starts during that time.  Fullen had a strong freshman campaign for the Brown and White, starting 11 games and scoring one goal, and Flint will look to make an impact in 2010.

Rounding out the defenders for Lehigh is a large and talented group of freshmen that consists of Nathan Hunt, Ben Kelley, Baxter Lanius, Mike Noone, and Kyle Sheridan.  Hunt was a four year starter in high school as well as a four time All-Conference selection, while Kelley was also a four year starter and a First-Team All-State honoree.  Lanius comes to Lehigh from Lawrenceville, New York where he helped lead his high school to a 34-3 record during his career and Noone was ranked as one of the top-30 defensemen by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.  Sheridan started all four years at Smithtown East High School and earned All-League and All-County accolades during that time.

At the goal keeper position Cassese has four players to choose from, including junior Morgan Haller, and sophomore Conor Murphy, as well as freshmen Dan Carr and Griffin Farha.  Callahan will work closely with the four Mountain Hawks as the competition for playing time promises to be fierce.  Haller started for the majority of the 2009 season, recording 85 saves and scooping up 24 ground balls, while Murphy appeared in nine games, and started six, sending back 56 shots during that time.  Carr comes to Lehigh from Penn Charter High School where he posted a 71% save percentage as a senior and sent back 461 shots during his career.  Farha meanwhile started for three years at Winston Churchill High School in Maryland and earned team MVP honors as a senior.

Lehigh will open its 2010 season on Saturday, February 13 when the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to take on the Saint Joseph’s Hawks.  The opening face-off is set for 1:00.
